Too bad for Lindros he'll have to play against Komisarek now. :D

And 8 games on top of it. Hope he finally retires the guy with a killer body check!!!

Question is would it make Komisareks year?

I dont think any player is happy when he severly injures another guy. Bet Stevens wasnt happy about Lindros pain.

Well, wouldn't you know. Here's the disturber in the bunch.

I respected the fact that Stevens was a good and effective defender. A future hall-of-fame member, I don't know... I wouldn't be surprised.

As to the comments about Lindros, I can sympathize but, on the whole, I can't agree whatsoever.

Yes, it can be said that Stevens's hit on Lindros and the others that he injured were 'legal' but I strongly doubt that they were morally defensible. Though I'm not a defenseman in the heat of the action, I think that he could have just as easily have given those players hip checks or body checks. To have aimed for the head is to know that there will likely be severe consequences for the one who receives the hit.

(A side issue... I wonder if it would be possible to hand out SEVERE penalties to players who do that in a way that is judged to have been either intentional or avoidable.)

I hope Komisarek will have the strenght of character to avoid doing the same kind of thing. It could happen occasionally by accident but to do it regularly is something else. I find it ironic that he's having to retire for the same conditions that have seriously compromised the health and careers of other players. I don't rejoice in it, by the way.

So, back to the beginning. Yes, Stevens was a good defenseman but no, I won't miss him for those reasons that I mentioned earlier.

Center-ice hit are the most difficult bodycheck a player can accomplish and need much talent and even more guts to carry them on.

There was a certain excitement when the ChC got itself ''Ulanov'' in a trade a few years ago ( a rare specialist of the genre). On his first game he went for a spectacular red line hit but ended-up the next 4 months on the injury list as a consequence.

A well executed center hit body check will take the breath out of the victime for at least the remaining of that game and somewhat paralysed temporally the remaining of the team as well....a good investement over all,...specially during the short playoff series.

I remember when Begin got Gonchar to freeze in the second game of the playoff......it made plain to the Bruins, after they had rolled all over them on the first game, that the Ch had just arrived in town and that they would have to be ready to fight hard to win the serie.

In that perspective, center ice hit can be very effective and the few tought enought players that delivered them are great assets.

Stevens was pure toughness and a great leader, his captaincy to the Devils will be missed.

I don't know about Komi doing center ice hits. Checks along the boards, yes. But I think he'll concentrate on getting more comfortable with his positional game before attempting that.

For a true sucessor to Scott (if there can be one), I'd look at Dion Phaneuf.

Now that man can hit!
