Leafs fall from top spot on Forbes list of NHL team values

The Toronto Maple Leafs are no longer considered the NHL's most valuable team — or even the most valuable of the league's Canadian-based clubs.

Both the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens have overtaken Toronto in Forbes's annual ranking of NHL franchise values.

The Rangers are worth $1.2 billion US, according to Forbes, followed by the Canadiens at $1.18 billion and the Leafs at $1.15 billion.

Toronto had held the top spot every year since 2006, but the Rangers cashed in on renovations to their arena, Madison Square Garden, while the Canadiens' value rose 18 per cent from last year on the strength of a lucrative new local television rights deal.

Poor on-ice performance combined with a weaker Canadian dollar were cited by Forbes as reasons for the Leafs' decline in value from $1.3 billion last year.

The Chicago Blackhawks ($930 million) and the Boston Bruins ($750 million) rounded out the top five, followed by the Vancouver Canucks ($750 million) in sixth place.

The Edmonton Oilers ($460 million) placed 12th, the Calgary Flames ($440 million) were 15th, the Ottawa Senators ($370 million) were 18th and the Winnipeg Jets ($350 million) were 20th.

With a valuation of $190 million, the Florida Panthers were ranked by Forbes as the least valuable of the 30 NHL franchises.

Hmm, probalby a blip and the Leafs will be tops again before long. Interesting to see Vancouver so high. Detroit will rise with its new arena.

Such stupid franchises at the bottom of the list. Wish the league had four less teams!

The amazing thing is that a team could be #1 on that list for what, nine years, and miss the playoffs every single one of those bloody years. My God they are inept.

The Greater Toronto Area passed the Chicagoland Area in population over the last few years. What you have is the fourth largest metropolitan population in North America (behind only Mexico City, New York City, and Los Angeles) ... except unlike those other cities they are rabid hockey fans. While it does matter how much the team sucks, they should have more than double the number of local fans as the Habs do, if only because of sheer population numbers. Greater Montréal has 4,027,000 people. The "Greater Golden Horseshoe" has about 9.5 million people. The Leafs are high value because they target the largest hockey fan-base in the world. The fact that they are NOT number 1 in value shows how horribly managed this team has been over the last few decades.

Imagine if they were well-managed.

This is why the GTA needs more than one team.

Absolutely.

NYC area has 3 teams. Sure, the population of the area is triple that of the GTA, but i bet there are fewer overall hockey fans in the area.
