KoZed
1- Lapierre cut from the camp in favor for Chipchura and Grabovski. Reason given by Carbo: Lapierre needed to work harder. 2- Price getting a start at the 3rd game of the season. Reason given by Carbo: Price worked hard enough to earn it. 3- Brisebois scratched for Jorges. Reason given by Carbo: Jorges worked hard enough to earn it. 4- Grabovski scratched for Chipchura. Reason given by Carbo: Grabovski needs to work harder. 5- Latendresse questionned about his performance. Reason given by Carbo: Latendresse needs to work harder. The message is getting hammered into the players real early and realy clear: you need to work hard or you won't play; inversely those who'll play will be those who will work hard. Carbo is helped by the fact that there's lot of players with similar talent level but it's a mix of kids and vets. Basically, it's vet Dandeneault that knocked kid Lapierre out of the lineup. Dandy's doing the job that was expected of Lapierre: a 4th line RW who could check intensely. Now Grabovski, who was given the job of completing Kovalev so a line could be built around Plex who deserved the promotion. Grabs didnt work hard enough to get his line clicking so Plex's back in that spot and Chipchura gets his kick at the can between Begin and Dandy. And Jorges, who work hard in camp gets rewarded with a game. That's the type of flexibility an extra vet like Breezer - who made moving up Dandy possible - can offer. Very soon in the season Carbo is making his mantra real clear: the players who will dress to play are personnaly accountable for their performances because there's someone else willing to take their place if their play level isnt up to par. If Latendresse doesnt work harder next game, Carbo has Murray and Grabovski in the stands and Streit who can all replace Lats on the LW. Half the spots up front are up for grabs. This makes things so interesting because Carbo now has a lever to lift the overall work ethic of this team. Can't do that if you dont have control over the players. And you only have that control when you have punishment and rewards at your hands and enough comparable players to fight for it. The best part is that the coach takes actions very early in the season. We'll see tomorrow if it works or not, but the real interesting part is when scratched players gets back in the lineup. We'll see then how they react to pressure situations.
BTH
Not sure if you're doing it on purpose, but it's Gorges, not Jorges. Anyways, playing the hardest workers is a strategy that works well but you never like to see young players with high upside sitting on the bench. Yes, they have to earn their spots, but they have to be given a proper chance to earn them - more than 2 games anyway. It takes a while to settle in to a new team in a new league. Cataclaw
Interesting observations, KoZed. I tend to agree. Carbonneau does have a certain flexibility with players this year, moreso than last year. I hope his strategy will pay off in the long run. It seems pretty sound. Wamsley01
I have been waiting for years for this team to compete every night. Last time I remember them bringing it every night was when Alain Vigneault coached them in 2000. Work Hard = Reward You can't ask for a better message. markierung
it's about time Gorges looked really good last year and then got dropped without reason. Carbo might be making up for not playing Koivu in the overtime PP.
Habitforming
Good message to have for the players but Carbonneau is not a coach. I'm not sure where he fits in.
The Saint
Ok, I'll bite... I'll give Carbo some credit, but he is still a work in progress in my books. Who could possibly disagree with the "hard work" mantra? If they tried they'd be laughed off these boards, so it's an easy argument to defend. Having said that, I too agree that the hard work message is being sent and rightfully so, but in my mind there are limits. Such as Tom Kostopolous playing on our power play. I mean, come on, the PP is not the place to reward grinders with ice time in my opinion. I am also unsure as to Carbo's strategy to roll his forward lines out there on the PP which he seemed to do a few times in both games so far. I would much prefer to see some PP specialists use that time to develop some chemistry, use their skill, NOT HIT FREAKIN D-MEN WITH SHOTS OVER AND OVER AGAIN! And the other annoyance I have with Carbo is the same as last year, he complains after waaaaay too many calls. I am sure he already has a rep with the refs, which can only hurt this team. Take your lumps like a man and let your penalty kill do your talking, not these funny faces and winces and verbal complaints to the refs on marginal calls. They happen to every team. He needs to get over it so this team doesn't start to think that complaining about reffing is an acceptable excuse for lack of discipline, judgement or performance. Chips
Kozed; I couldn't agree more with your argument. Carbo has loads of options and he is using them well. It puts the team into a great position down the road when and if injuries haunt the team. We will have players who have chemistry with the team that can jump in and out of the lineup. He's also simulating a playoff drive. Chances are that different teams and/or different nights will require a different look to our team and the way we play. Having access to such a diverse group of talent really puts us in great shape. What we need now is a great coach to put that plan/strategy into action. I'm happy with the likes of Carbo and Muller and Company. And I'm sure that bob would also offer his advise when asked or when necessary. IMO. we are in good shape. but only time will tell if our Coach(s) can truly motivate and bring out the individual talents into one big winning team! GO HABS GO! KoZed
Jeez, some of you guys have so much bad faith... I'd be shocked if I had'nt heard that same old crap thousand times before about a hundred different coaches around the league. When some fans just dont like the coach, when its that type of irationnal and personnal dislike, nothing will be too exagerated to claim his head. *yawn* Get a grip... kenadian
Hard work will only take you so far; you need to have good systems/plays and be able to adjust them (either different setup/players) period by period......other teams do that. Heck you need to be able to adjust shift by shift. And this isn't all on the coaching staff........if something's not working the players need to adjust on the fly, and let the coaches know it's not working. Or wing it and try something new.........practicing plays/setups aren't the same as playing against another team Edited October 10, 2007 by kenadian
Chris
Really, Ted Nolan's team is always lacks top end talent and cast offs. He does very well and took the Islanders to the playoffs last year. He probably will do it again this year. Hard work takes you to alot of places, it wears other teams down, it keeps the TEAM together. When is the last time you saw the Habs outworking the other team. Years, i'd say closer to adecade.

BTH
I wonder whether any of the veteran players don't take Carbonneau seriously due to his mistakes last season that are the exact opposite of this mantra, e.g. benching Rivet, Perezhogin, Samsonov (I know he started off awful but after he spoke to Carbo and started working hard, he was benched again, which is probably where he gave up) I'm not saying it's true, just thinking out loud that maybe i's too little too late. Wow this is exactly right! This all makes sense, you don't work hard you ride the pine.. Just look at Kovalev!.....Oh shit The guy has been working hard lately and even when he isn't, he still has, and has always had, a generally positive effect on the team. This is one of our most valuable players without a doubt. He takes way too much blame. Gainey is not going to trade him and for good reason and for the moment his play is defending that argument, so find a new scapegoat.
