Martin stated that Price will be a game-time decision, and should be good enough to dress as the backup in any case. That being said, Carey has gone in twice for Auld this year, so hopefully Auld fares a bit better tonight.

GO HABS GO!!!!

I like the idea of dressing Auld, myself. Give him a chance to bounce back from last game. And if he fails to come through, then you know that you need a different solution as backup. Assuming Price needs a couple more games off before the playoffs, I wouldn't rule out calling up Sanford at some point - he was tolerably decent as Luongo's backup, and it's not clear at all that Auld is an upgrade on him.

I hate to say it, but in retrospect keeping Cedric Desjardins might have been a better move in pure hockey terms, given how mediocre Auld has been this season.

4 goalies are on waivers today...1 decent one in Conklin. If Auld falters, maybe they bite? Of course, Price still may start, he'll be backing up at worst. As for Desjardins, he is the backup on Tampa's AHL team, Sanford would have been more realistic than him.

It is tough for Auld to be any good when he plays so rarely, so for that I cut him some slack..

That said, I firmly believe they got Auld to make sure they have the weakest, credible backup they could find, one who was old and not up and coming. Why? Because at the time they decided to make a bet on Price and wanted to make sure their was no one else the "fans" could turn to. Having the fans behind Price fully, with no calls for the backup, seems to be important. It makes Price the go too guy and keeps the fans off his back. (and the team behind him too)

Now that Price has put in a good season, that pressure is probably less (people forget the feelings around Montreal in September, before Price played well.. remember that first exhibition game???).

Perhaps now we can go get a real backup who, while not challenging Price for number one, could actually put in a decent game. I wouldn't do it though, since, imo, this season is a wash. Too many injuries. Our trades are all downgrades from the player who is gone, when we needed upgrades!

I see us making the playoffs, then going quietly out in the first or second round, depending on how we end up with...

Conklin = automatic SC final loss. Which would be awesome !!!!

As for Desjardins, I thought he was #1 with Norfolk before getting injured. He has a very decent 14-6-1 season with the same stats as Tokarski... He was called up in december as well no ?

I really don't get why Pyatt is in over White and I'm sick of the long leash JM keeps giving to Gomez. Habs have strong start and Gomez takes his usual stupid Penalty, except this time a 4 min penalty

Gomez has been a black hole for any winger to play with, why not just saddle him with Moen and Halpern, or since Pyatt is playing tonight, with Moen and Pyatt, since they don't score anyways???

If Desjardins was NHL calibre, then the Lightning wouldn't have traded for Roloson.

He isn't exactly ripping up the AHL this season.

Auld is not an NHL goalie. All you want from a backup is to stop stoppable pucks and be average.

He has allowed 6-7 bad goals in 10 games. It's just not good enough.

Let's hope Cammy can heat up 1-1!

to be fair to Auld, he has a winning record this year, despite being rusty every game. While it is easy to crap all over him for the early mistake, I have seen Price do that same thing several times, usually getting lucky it didn't end up in his net.. .

I was more worried that our team wouldn't beat Ward, but so far so good. I will cut Auld some slack and just hope for the best for him. I just hope we don't sit back in the 2nd.

amazing how AK46's game has turned around since being freed from Gomez. Nice to see Eller get the go ahead goal. Would like to see Max Pac and Gionta moved to the Eller/Deshernais lines and see Gomez with Pyatt and Moen.

I said back when he was signed that he was a lousy signing and he hasn't show anything to change my opinion. Auld is a backup. A backup's role requires him to be READY when needed. Having a winning record doesn't mean much unless he was THE reason the habs won the games he played, which he wasn't. On the other hand the habs are in a playoff position BECAUSE of Price. If Auld had played 10 more games this year, the habs may not be in a playoff spot right now.

I would much rather the habs put him on waivers and either call up Sanford or claim Conklin. Every game Auld has played he has looked worse. I also hate seeing a Dryden tribute mask on such a seive!!

You seem rather worked up.. yes, you hate Gomez.. got it..

As for Auld, why on earth would you compare him to Price? Price is a starter and Auld was brought in to make sure no one every wanted the backup. Auld is no where near as good as Price, Halak, even Reimer from the Leafs.

While it is true a backup has to be ready, few backups can play so few games and "impress". Most that you hear about coming in hot are the ones coming up from the AHL who were playing every night.

No, I don't think Auld is a good goalie, but I also don't like the way they have managed Price's game time. If we ended up a strong contender in the playoffs, Price would be exhausted. I would have preferred a better signing then Auld, but we can't do anything about it now. My hoping for Auld to do well tonight has nothing to do with Price (who looks like hell tonight just sitting there), but everything to do with hoping we win.

He has a winning record because he has played the Islanders, Atlanta, Toronto, Florida, Rangers, Calgary, Florida and Toronto.

If he played 10 playoff teams he would have 1 or 2 wins and a sub .900 sv%.

He looks like a guy playing with no confidence.

Again, what is your point????

Yes, he played weaker teams.. ala.. the backup...

Where did I suggest he is better then Price? Where did I suggest he should be a starter? Where did I suggest playing him against top teams?

He is our backup, and backups play the crap teams.. and he has a winning record in those games. What do you want from a backup? We had a much better backup and everyone was mad if he played better then Price... now you don't have to worry. :)

Of course I hate Gomez - what exactly has he brought to this team??? How many games has he had a positive outcome on???? How many wingers get moved to play with him and forget how to shoot, how to take a pass and just plain start sucking worse then they did pre-Gomez. He is a one trick pony and while he looks great carrying the puck from inside our blue line across center, its just too bad he usually coughs it up as soon as he crosses the opposition's blue line. I get he is a playmaker and not a goal scorer, so i won't go on about his lack of goals or his shot, but why is that that players can score playing with any other center, suddenly suck when playing with Gomez???

As for Auld, what's the point of having a backup if he isn't capable of stealing a game when needed?? Auld clearly isn't capable of winning unless the team in front of him wins the game for him. why the habs picked Auld is beyond me. I would have preferred a Hedberg, Nittymaki or Biron last summer, but that;s a moot point now. The issue is that at best, Auld probably falls in the bottom third of backups in the league. WIth the D we have, we need much more from our backup.

Deshernais takes a penalty to prevent a potential goal - which probably means we'll see his ice time reduced. Gomez takes a stupid 4 min penalty with the usual impunity on ice time.

Meh. The guy has been bad. Mentioning Halak is redundant.

He got yanked against the Flames even though they spotted him 4 goals.

forgot that he didn't actually get the win that night. That win of course was overshadowed because Subban clearly doesn't know the respectful way to celebrate his first OT game winning goal  That was also the game that here in Calgary they are citing as one of the turning points for the Flames season.

Count me among the pro-Desharnais, anti-Gomez crowd. True, the former is an unproven commodity, but Gomez has been a disgrace pretty much all season long. JM either has a pathological love of veterans, or a pathological mistrust of rookies, or he is intent on keeping Gomez a participant in the hope that he finally gets going come playoffs. I can understand it (I think), but if Gomer has a bad playoff and Desharnais keeps playing well we should be actively exploring ways to get rid of the baked Alaskan.

Auld has the coolest helmet of any Habs goalie in the post-mask era. And that's about the only thing about him that's any good.

His save percentage is not that bad. Auld - .917, Price - .919.

My point, which you are not getting, is that he is probably playing worse then normal, since he rarely plays. Would he be a great goalie playing more, NO.. but he might not look so rusty when he does.

Would I like a better backup goalie, YES.. but they clearly didn't want one when they went out and got Auld.. So why bitch at Auld?

I am in a different camp... I think Gomez is playing very poorly, but I don't think Des is going to come in and wow anyone if he had to play Gomez minutes, against the lines Gomez plays against. I don't think he is as good as Gomez, but Gomez is also not good enough for playing on the 2nd line.

I am happy with Des, for the role he is playing, but I don't see him taking a top 6 role on this team any time soon.

What we really need is Gomez to play to his potential, which I doubt will happen this year (maybe the playoffs I guess).

Frankly I hate seeing a tribute mask for my favourite goalie on a sieve like Auld. I'd love to see Price with a mask like Auld's or the one he had in the centennial year, versus that horrible mask he was wearing at the heritage game!!
