News about Emelin

I don't know about you guys, But I find that we aren't getting much info about Emelin. All I keep hearing is that he's good, but I've never seen him in action. I don'T even know if he's big and tough or smaller and more talented!

I just read an article on RDS.ca where Timmins says that he's confident to see Emelin with the Habs next season. He is in the last year of a contract he had signed with his russian team.

Here's the link to the article!

I've heard conflicting things about Emelin's style as well. He's definitely a physical d-man, but I've heard he's a good puckhandler as well, though he doesn't play an offensively minded game. Maybe he's a bit like Dan Hamhuis based on that kind of description.

Supposedly, Emelin expressed regret about signing his most recent contract in Russia. He didn't fit well with his new team and city. I don't know if that means we're the frontrunners for him come next summer or not, but it seems like he won't re-sign with his current club. Whether he chooses the NHL or a different KHL club is yet to be seen.

From Habsinsideout

Habsinsideout - Audio: News and views from Habs rookie camp

Trevor Timmins, the Canadiens' director of recruitment, discussing P.K. Subban, Yanick Weber, Danny Kristo, Ben Maxwell, Olivier Fortier, the rich pipeline of defencemen in the system, Pavel Valentenko, Ryan McDonagh, David Fischer and the still-in-Russia Alexei Yemelin. "Alexei is in the last year of his contract, he's expressed interest in coming here," Timmins said of Yemelin. "He's ready to make the step to North America. We just have to hope he doesn't sign any more deals in Russia! Now's the time for him to come over here." Also: David Desharnais, Maxim Trunev and who Timmins might see advancing to the Canadiens' main camp on Friday.

Timmons speaks - Clip runs 13:19.

Valentenko speaks - Clip runs 2:44.

Yanick Weber speaks - Clip runs 7:55.

He got "trapped" into a contract because his agent told him the Habs hadn't made him an offer when they actually had - or at least that's one story. Anyway, he wants to come over and we'll have a chance at bringing him over next year.

If there's one player, I could compare him to, I would say he's something like the current Hamrlik (as opposed to the old, offensive Hamrlik).

He is in NHL 09!

Go to AK BARS roster under superliga.

It shows his attributes and everything, don't know if they're credible or not but i think its cool he is in the game.

I've always heard him compared to Kasparitis

me too.

Pierre maguire has the biggest man crush about him.

from what I remember, I heard timmins say that emelin ahd a russian agent as well as a north american agent and it's the russian who screwed everything up. as well, emelin's dad was coaching tthe team so I guess he felt he owed his dad at least a season or two.

anyhow I thik he's north america bound next year and NHL in 2.

The Canadiens will have a lot of options in defense, one that would be entertaining would be put together a group that is as big, physical, and intimidating as possible. For example:

McDonagh-Komisarek

Hamrlik-O'Byrne

Emelin-Valentenko

Ouch... ;)

Yeah, but no good passing/rusher doesnt help much...

I'm guessing you didn't forget about Markov, and just went with the bruisers.

RDS will be showing 2 pre-season games, including the game they'll be playing against the Bruins in Roberval, Québec. Roberval was named this years Hockeyville. I'm njot sure what the other game will be!

Somehow I don't think people got I wasn't serious with the lineup ;)

Although McDonagh, Hamrlik, O'Byrne, and I think Emelin (it's hard to evaluate a player we hardly ever seen) are all pretty good puck movers, and they can make that great first pass to lead the transition. As for Komisarek and Valentenko, they may not have as much mobility, but they're still far from being big dumb defenseman in the Wade Belak mold, they have good skills and Komisarek especially has great hockey sense.

Still I fully agree, we need to keep Markov, and at least one of Subban, Weber, and Carle, depending on how well McDonagh's overall game progresses. If he becomes a solid all-around player who can be a monster in all three zones, then obvisouly we don't nee to keep as many powerplay specialists.

I want him to come over so bad.

He is exactly what the Habs need more of come playoff time, he plays on an edge and pretty much every team in the league would hate him after just 1 season.

I'm starting to doubt we'll ever see Emelin in Montreal or even in the NHL. Had he come last year, things would be very different, but our incredible depth at the defense position, and the new KHL spending more and more money has changed everything.

If Emelin does indeed decide to come to North America, we can no longer garantee him a roster spot, therefore there is a chance that he could play in Hamilton. In the best case scenario, he would earn about 850K in Montreal for three consecutive years, otherwise he could earn maybe 50-55K in the minors. However since Emelin has become star in Russia, his opportunity cost for signing with Montreal would be quite high, as he can probably make at least 2-3 millions a year if he resigns in the KHL.

My guess is that the dispute betweem the Maple Leafs and the NHL regarding Frogren's contrat will have a big impact on whether or not we'll ever see Emelin in the NHL. If the NHL rules that the entry-level contract rule doesn't apply to Frogren because of his age and experience, then players like Emelin are likely to make the jump once they get a little older. Until then, unless they are superstar players who can quickly make 7-9 millions a year in the NHL, I'm guessing most decent-to-pretty-good Russian players will play in the KHL so they can make more money.

You make some valid points. I also wondered if Emelin would be

willing to spend a year in Hamilton developing. Timmins said he is

close but might need a year. I wonder when his KHL season ends?

Is it possible that we could see him with the Habs this season

depending on how far we go in the playoffs. I doubt we'd play

him though, but it would be nice to have him experience whats

going on here.

I can see us having 2 roster spots available next year on D. I'm

pretty sure this is Bouillons last year with us since Valentenko

is close to ready and we'll want to save cap space. I can also

see Carle replacing Brisebois next year. Thats more cap space

that can go to re-signing our forwards.

I don't think Emelin is a star in Russia, they tend to frown on

the physical game he likes to play. I believe I read he's a 3rd

pairing dman in Russia, because he tends to take alot of

penalities.

You know, next year in Hamilton we might have Emelin,Weber,

Subban and McDonagh. That would be a fun group to watch.

While we're on the topic of D prospects and coming overseas, has anyone heard anything about Nicklas Torp? He's the forgotten guy out there. I haven't heard a peep about him since draft day.

He missed the whole season due to an injury. Thats all I know, but

it must have been something serious.

Not to mention Phil Paquet and possibly David Fischer...

I guess, they'll have to make a decision on Phil Paquet

for next season.

David is probably 2 years away.

Anyway Weber,Subban,Paquet and Fischer are all

right-handed shots, can't see them all on the

Bulldogs next year.

David is actually probably like 3-4 years away, I would not be surprised if he played his full College career.

He is a real project pick.

I disagree.

I think David is a max of 2 years away..... he and his current coaches expect big strides from him this year after having more responsibility put on him.
