Is Bob Going to do Something Surprising?

I am beginning to wonder of Bob has been quietly working on a deal that would bring someone unexpected, like a Kovalchuk, Thornton or Marleau. I have a feeling we're going to be surprised!

It's pretty much a given that Bob has been making calls since he has yet to sign any of his UFAs. Waiting until after the draft because who he signs will depend on who he drafts? Yeah, I don't think so.

But just because Bob is trying to get a deal, it doesn't mean he can. The price for someone like Vinny or Heatley will be steep and I'm sure Markov's name will be mentioned every time. In my books, and presumably in the books of Bob Gainey, he's untouchable. If something big happens, than great. If not, I won't lose any sleep. It's a long summer.

some assumptions

-Komi is not back

-Tanguay is interested in coming back (agent called Gainey, etc)

-Koivu seems to be tired of us, we seem to be tired of him.

-Kovalev can only sign here for a good $$. Otherwise it's Russia or e.g. Rags for under 2M.

-Pleks, Higgins, etc have underperformed. Far from being washed up, they may however be more valuable on the trade table than on the roster?!Plek is nowhere near a 1st line center, he might even be better suited as a 3rd line center. Same with Chris "I'm a 40-40 guy" Higgins, who now looks like he's a good checker.. :s We can keep both of these guys... but on the 3rd line, meaning we need something on the 2nd line.

predictions

-A top dman will be acquired to replace Komi. Will it be a Bouwmee at 6M or a Beauchemin at 4M? (or a trade, etc) Both solutions are more efficient than Komi at 5M he's reportedly asking.

-A centerman or two or three will be acquired to support / replace our actual centers. Jokinen is UFA. Lecavalier might be on the block, so is Danny Brière? What about Spezza?

as of today, right now, this present time, Markov and Price are totally untouchable. No one else is.

I would say some of our younger assets such as McDonagh, Pacioretty, D'Agostini and Subban are pretty untouchable in my opinion, or at least they should be. We've been steadily building through the draft for the last couple years. Don't wanna see all that go out the window.

Also, Jay won't be signing here. Even before we brought in Martin, the chances were incredibly slim at best. Now, forget about it.

I think we are in a more precarious trading situation then people seem to realize. Sure, we have a ton of cap room right now, but don't forget we would be trading to replace some of our top 6 forwards that may not be coming back (Tanguay, Koivu, Kovy, namely). If we trade even more of our top 6 forwards away (Kostitsyns, Pleks, Higgins), we would be using a band aid to try and stop the hemorrhaging. This is especially true if we have want to put a package together to trade for a higher value player, like Pleks and Higgins for Vinny or what have you.

Pax, Dago, Lats, even Maxwell can all easily replace Higgins and Pleks in their ACTUAL not so important role (not in their vital 2008 roles)... PARTICULARLY if we trade e.g. Higgins and Pleks for ESTABLISHED star(s) AND if we play a solid system.

Look at teams like the Preds, consistenly performing since they got Arnott. and that's only frikkin Arnott. But whoever they trade or lose is easily replaceable because they've got the system, the stability and the Pivot.

So I wouldn't be afraid to trade our few established young vets, if it's to get more leadership, drive, etc. I'd overpay to only get a Brad Richards. A winner. We've loaded with losers and "don't care"...

RE: Bouwmee.

he's gonna sign where the money is. We have money AND caproom. We are in the ball game. Rags are not, Flyers are not unless they trade Danny, Wings are not, Avs are not. etc.

Looks like Chris Chelios will not sign with the wings. Anyone here feel he may return to the Habs to complete his career? Bob has a history of bringing back x-habs. He could be a good cheap filler, with tons of experience and massive upside to help teach the kids. Chelios indicated his preference is to stay in the Eastern Conference. I would not be disappointed with this move.

If we don't sign Saku (looks like we won't); we lose a major faceoff specialist, so we need to balance that loss if we don't sign him and at the same time bring in a #1 centre. So I'm hoping that Bob pulls the trigger and deals away some of our talented second and third line players (which we are blessed with) for that proven #1.

:ghg: Go Habs Go!

I would say trade for a better round pick.

Even though it's no big surprise that the Habs are desperately in needs of a top centre prospect.

I would so love to see a lot of actions. Something shocking you know.

Habs trading 2-3 players to get 2-3 picks, then turning around trading for rights of negos for a player (e.g. Bouwmee), trading another player / prospect for an overpaid vet (e.g. Marleau, Danny) etc.

but... that's what Fantasy leagues are for. To realise our dreams to see action. Cause, IRL (in real life) action does not happen. :(

We can try for Jay Bo, it won't hurt us if he says no at our initial overtures. But I do think he'll go west if Philly can't open up the room for him. Philly would be where he'd sign pre-lockout (no salary cap), IMHO. But LA, Vancouver (esp if Sedins leave, the Luongo connection), Minny, maybe Dallas or St. Louis will be in play. I don't know if there is a favourite.

Bob better do something... because if the plan is to rebuild through our youth going forward and keeping a low payroll I don't know what the point of having Bob is anymore.

Id rather win cup's than have loads of caproom. Each year we sit here laughing at all other teams signing their stars for what we call "crazy contracts" still its those teams that end up winning cups and going far into the playoffs while we sit here with a team that soon looks more and more like the other teams farms. Id love to have an overpayed superstar for once and Id love to see us overpay a little to keep Komisarek, especially now when he is aproaching 30 years old and should be in his primetime. But noooo, lets dump all good players because they want to be paid like good players and stick with our 4 lines of 3rd-liners. /CRY PLS resign Komi.

Remember the miracle come back 6-5 against the Rags ? Komi fighting Dubinsky ? That, sir, was a game changer...

So was Michael Ryder scoring twice and getting an assist and Christobal Huet coming into the net.

Same with Chris "I'm a 40-40 guy" Higgins, who now looks like he's a good checker..

To be fair, I think Chris actually said something more like, "I think I can be a 40-40 guy" or "I want to be a 40-40 guy."

Just because he isn't doesn't mean we should put down ambition. Hell, if he had said, "I'm okay being a 20-20 guy," everyone would have been on him for having no heart.

if only he was a 20-20 guy. :P

(23 pts in 57 games, prorate this to 82 games and you get 32.8 pts)

Bob may be trying to make a deal, but no deal will materialize because Montreal has nothing to deal for a Thornton, Marleau or Kovalchuk. As well no free agents will sign here either

wtih the media, Bob 'no class' Gainey as the GM and the tax situation.

Gonne have to start over, build threw the draft, whcih means finding someone better than Timmins at finding prospects

MTL fans seem pretty content, when all is said and done, to fall in line much like their TML counterparts 6hrs west down the 401 and accept this idea that "hey we're savings capspace ... we aren't doing anything and we're hemmoraging the only talent we do have, but hey we have capspace for later".

Dalhabs isn't far offbase, sooner or later Bob needs to grow a set and make a move that will define his career as a GM. So far his legacy is picking a goalie at #5 that pretends he's Patrick Roy without any of the cups or conn smythes to back it up.

You can be sarcastic all you like, but its the truth.

There is no help coming for this team, either through trade, the cupboard is bare, or free agent signing. Yeah, all the cap space for nothing.

Nobody will sign here. Nobody other than Montreal Canadiens fans think this is a great place to play. Nobodies dream is to come back to Montreal to play, if they are French Canadien. Lecavalier even said so before signing his big deal. Briere took a pass, Laraque passed once or twice before finnally signing here on the downside of his career.

Timmins isnt an genius or saviour. Hes the guy that said Chipchura over Wolski, Mike Green or Travis Zayak. He took A Kostitsyn when Carter, Seabrook, Parise, Getzlaf, Richards, Kessler and Perry were alll still available

In the very same draft he took urquhart and Lapierre before Patrice Bergeron

In 2006 he takes Ben Maxwell and leaves Milan Lucic there for the Bruins too pick up. yeah lets take the 6 ft 177 lb player instead of the 6-3 220 lb player. Everybody knows Montreal has been weak physically for decades now it seems. In the 1st rd he takes Bobby Fisher over a very good French player Claude Giroux?

Why is it that Montreal keeps drafting the shitty or 3rd line French players, Eric Chouinard, Maxime Lapierre, and Gill latendresse and fails to draft the good ones Bergeron, Vlasic, Giroux, DENIS SAVARD? Ok can blame Timmins for that one, but you get the point.

Not saying drafting is easy. Yet Timmins seems to miss alot.

Time to go in a different direction. I'd say trade the 1st rd pick to either Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Philly or New ersey for their Head Scout, or whole scouting department

This guy lives on another planet.

Oh yeah? Tell me how you'd feel if your boss fired me over the phone? Would you still be saying he was the best, classiest boss you ever had?

Yeah didn't think so
