The Chicoutimi Cucumber
Montreal was on Jagr's short list of teams last year, he came right out and said it. I'd love to see what a season of Pleks and Jagr on the same line would bring. The number of line combos Pleks had to endure last year was staggering. Put them together, and say you've got until Christmas, let it rip! Oh, and let's not forget, we've got the Casino, and we know about Jagr and gambling. Name me a town that doesn't have a casino these days. But yeah, we sometimes fall into this trap of STILL thinking nobody wants to play here, despite several seasons of being fairly darned attractive to UFAs. JoeLassister
This thread reminds me how bad I want to see Price, Eller, Emelin and Subban signed before we can really see how much is left to spend...

Then I'd suggest going to http://capgeek.com/cap-calculator/ and playing with the numbers once you remove Gomez' contract.

I don't play with numbers. Playing with numbers brings you so much dissapointment every time you realize that Gomez' contract is not yet off our books... I was able to fit pretty much everyone at an inflated price with Gomez still on the books so honestly, don't worry so much. People keep thinking the cap is at 2006 levels and we're still paying players like its 2006.

Matt (the guy who runs the site) has set the bar at $70.3 M as per Bob McKenzie's note from around a month ago but I don't think anyone thinks that will be the cap when the puck drops. So fans (and teams likely) are trying to have some sort of cushion under the 70.3 when the seemingly inevitable happens.

I'm just making it clear that even with Gomez, we're not in any cap trouble. We're simply tight on flexibility. Where we really can't afford Gomez is 2013-2014 when we have to re-sign Pacioretty and Desharnais. Montreal has a well managed cap with only Bourque and Gomez really being the issue. Some might be worried about Gionta but I'm not. Plekanec looks better and better every year and we have some real flexibility on the blueline. I was originally gung-ho on dropping Kaberle but I now see what kind of insurance he gives us for puck moving defencemen. I have a feeling Bergevin is trying to find a top four shutdown guy and if we create depth that way, all we have to hope for is good health. I just hope we don't make any boneheaded moves like signing Parenteau.
Commandant
Bourque is only an issue if he can't regain enough form to score 15-20 goals a year. If he scores that, he's good value.

Much like Kostitsyn I prefer smart players over stupid sometimes they score goals players.

I think Bourque is going to regain his form and he'll be a 20 goal scorer again. Last season he had Plekanec who was a little less than standard and doing too much and then a rotation of crappy wingers whether it be Moen or Darche or tryign Eller or Leblanc. I think there were even a few games with Blunden up there. We'll have Gionta back this season who should take off some pressure and then we'll surely see a re-surgence of Plekanecs. I might be inclined to say Bourque finishes 4th in goals on the team behind Gio #1, Pacioretty, Cole. On a aisde note Bourque reminds me so much Brian Savage. Can skate well, not overly physical, nice release and streaky. Type of player who doesn;t net a goal every 4 games but rather 3 goals today then goes 2 weeks then maybe pops in 4 then a month off, etc... Willey101
I thought Savage scored about 16 in October and 9 for the rest of the season. He was the great October player I have ever seen. Too bad we could not offer 1/4 season contracts. He was a tremendous golfer as well. Maybe that's why his mid season performance was horrible.....depressed about a lack of golf.
