I would have rather taken a shot with Stewart on a 1 yr deal. I actually would have rather acquired Stewart than Kassian, without having to give anyone up. Anaheim is a very smart organization.

Aves had enough of him, Blues had enough, Sabres had enough and Minni didn't resign, so might say something about him and the massive haircut in salary he signed for also sign not in demand.

I don't get why we would need Stewart, not a goal scorer, not a P/P guy. Kassian has possibly some upside, we need to gt his head screwed on. We need goal scorers. Plain and simple . Who's available? Semin is the only pure goal scorer available.

The point of the kassian trade was to dump Prust's salary, so I really don't see us giving up anything, in fact we gained a draft pick.

I wouldn't have minded Stewart, but we still needed to move salary out, before doing that.

Why did we have to dump Prusts salary? He was worth the 2.5 for one year.Especially since most of that went to the soft, useless 4th line crap we got from Buff

Well look at the return on every Stewart trade. Now look at what Kassian was worth. Same as PAP last year, an addition by subtraction for Nucks

Soft useless 4th line crap from Buffalo? I think some might beg to differ on that appraisal.

Prust's elbow pad tossing incident may of been his last strike with Bergevin? They added a 5th round pick (a la Gallagher, Hudon, Dietz, Gregoire potential) at 1/2 the salary. Which may be difference in adding a top six upgrade or not.

Habs simply need more offense, Prust had 4g and Kassian had 10g, so it cant hurt can it?

Yes Stewart had good value way back when, then it has been diminishing over the years, this year simply walked and resigned for dick-all. He may of been on OK pick-up, but someone called him Rene Bourque 2.0, which isn't encouraging at all, whereas Kassian is only 24, has played less than 200NHL games and may be the opposite and still have some upside.

Damn Don, you make sense and I agree with you. This can't be a trend? can it?

My grandmother has been posting for me lately! Maybe thats why?

So list of top UFA forwards is wafer slim now;

Bergenheim, Boyes, Fehr, Glencross, Santorelli, Semin, Stempniak, Tlusty, Upshall.

Should Habs try and sign any of these?

Of those, I'd have some level of interest in Boyes (shootout specialist), Glencross, and Tlusty, maybe Fehr, Santorelli, and Semin but there are more question marks with those three. None are top six upgrades but would provide more offence from the bottom six and could step into a top six role when there are injuries. Upgrading the third line isn't thrilling but an upgrade is an upgrade.

What will Habs realistically have in cap space to sign a UFA (once RFAs dealt with)

$1.5-2m?

It all depends on Galchenyuk. If he signs short-term, they should have a couple million to work with. If they work out a long-term deal though, there won't be any money for a UFA without a trade being made first.

Brian I thought we had 7+ million at this point. Where is that money going? Galchenyuk should sign for 2 at 3.5. leaves about 3.5, mind you MB likes to keep a couple million on hand, so to get anybody worth while we need to toss someone overboard. Is that about it?

From your remaining $3.5 million, add in something for Tinordi and Bournival (or Thomas, one of them may make the team). That knocks another $1.2-$1.5 M off the cap, making it around $2 million before budgeting for any 'slush fund' to start the season. Personally, I think Galchenyuk comes in closer to $3 M than $3.5 so if they budget a million or so for in-season space, there's around $1.5 or so for a potential UFA.

Teams usually carry 13 F/7 D/2 G correct? We're already at 7 defencemen. Unless someone moves, there's no room for Tinordi (or Barberio). When Galchenyuk signs there's only room for one more forward. If a D-Man moves out, that's likely where the money for Tinordi comes from.

Hmmm someone is on the way out of town, maybe 2. MB is working the phones, so I am sure he will find someone.

I suspect Galch won't sign for that small amount. Bridge or not,he's not taking DD or Eller $. He's our future star

He may or may not be out future star, he hasn't exactly lit it up yet. He really has no leverage as an rfa going for big dollars.

Come on, Scott had total of 7g in 4 years at university and still made it to play 274 NHL games (and score a whooping 5g).

He's played LW and def. I don't know think he's as bad as you say. He plays decent defensive positional hockey and obviously serves a purpose. He's played on some good organizations. No offense skills, but a few Habs don't either

I think his 517 penalty minutes in 274 games as well as the 3 or 4 suspensions tells all we need to know about John's skill level.

He's 20/21. Ton of talent there. Devil's advocate: I thought AK 46 was top 15 talent back in 09.

Bridge deals don't typically go higher than $3.5 million. (Ryan O'Reilly's offer sheet with Calgary may be the lone exception.) If he wants $4M+ on a two year deal, this will last into the season or until he signs an offer sheet.

He has lots of potential, no doubt, but bridge deals are there to not pay a crazy amount for that potential. He made $1.35 M last year (including the bonuses that he hit). A 2 x $3.5 M deal - which I believe is more than he'll get - would still represent a significant pay raise.

Does moving a d-man and signing a new forward seem in the cards for this summer? Or might they let rookies fight for spot and start season as is (and make many fans and media totally lose it) and simply make a trade late fall, at X-mas or late Feb if really not scoring enough?
