Who will Gainey call first?

I have no clue but I suspect Rafalski or Schneider. I agree with Pat Hickey on this regarding what to expect.

However, always remember what we have to apply to "expect".

Yep. I think he will call Rafalski first, followed by a couple of other big names but I believe we'll wind up with Schneider who I'd be very happy with.

nice to dream, but i think gainey will be looking for one if not two d-men (no way we go after any of the top 4). way too pricey, and the big names are coming next year.

Things are not going to change with a small signing. We need some hard core action to at least address one main position this year or we are putting everything on Saku again. It's not going to fly for another year. We will suck again next year and battle for the play-offs. WE NEED A CENTER!!!!! AND WE NEED HIM NOW!!!

Briere is worth the bucks.......Good for french fans...good for Saku......good for Carbs....goood for Kovalev.......

Goood good goooooood....no down sides

Pay him the bucks, let's move on to the next need.....WE HAVE THE DOUGH

I guess you missed him in the playoffs where he was not worth "THE BIG BUCKS".

Having said this, I would not hate the Habs signing him, I just don't expect a miracle championship because of him. Build from the draft, goalie out and then add free agents to get to the cup. Stop gap measures = LEAFS, RANGERS. Proper Player Drafting = Redwings, Avalanche and yes Flyers.

I'd love to have Zubrus, Rafalski, or Kariya.

Landing one of those three (hopefully more then one, but Rafalski first) plus pulling the trigger on the Marleau deal (finally!!!!) would put us in contender status.

be prepared to wait though.

D first, one of Rafalski, Hannan, Preissing. I'd say we might get Hannan. Rafalski seems to be 'svengali-ed' by lou lamiorello.

Has something changed in Zubrus' demeanor? If so, might be worth it. I have the feeling Kariya would suck with us.

I disagree, I think this team needs to improve on the blueline but not necesarrily with a big signing but by signing the right players for decent amount of money. If Briere really wants to play for the Habs he would not ask for $7 million a season, and I don't think that BG would give that to him. I think this team needs more grit and character. Offensively the Habs have a lot of pure skill, talent and future prospects that are not that far off in term of development. Signing a player such as Smyth would provide this grit and character, Imagine all of the garbage goals he would get for us. He would also provide experience which is very important on an NHL club.

On the Blueline I would like to see the Habs take a stab at Priessing, Rafalski or Hannan. All three of these players would shore up the Defence. Missing Souray's shot on the PP (if he does indeed go) will be a blow to the team. But I am confident that there are others on the team that can fill in. Markov has a good shot but was always feeding it to Souray. Streit has a good shot....maybe even try Kovalev on the point.

Anyways the point is I don't think we need to spurgle and spend an insane amount of money on a centre at this point. Smyth is the only real big name for insano money I would consider right now in terms of a forward. But Defence is a very pressing concern and one that must be addressed.

I'm the opposite in this scenario.

Smyth is NOT worth "insano" money in any instance. leadership, grit aside NO WAY 70 pts career high? ...please

I like the rumour that Briere would accept less than $7 mil to sign with us. If so, we should probably take the chance and sign him to a long-term deal. If not, screw that and start pushing hard for D.

What I WOULD like to hear about Briere is some analysis. My impression of Briere is that he's a speedy puck-carrying player. But Kovalev is also a puck-carrier, as is Koivu (as is Kostityn, etc).. The danger here is that his style will be too redundant on our team. This doesn't mean he shouldn't be signed, but we might have to make further deals to adapt a roster to him.

Anyway, once/if that's done, if we still have dough, defence is obviously the big priority. If we add Briere and subtract Souray, without meaningfully replacing him, we won't be any better off.

I think we will be drastically better. Let's face it, Souray brings offence on the PP only, his D is not a factor here. Briere brings more offence then Souray, so he could only help us.

We might be marginally better...but contrary to popular belief around here, having the LEAGUE'S MOST DANGEROUS PP is actually a good thing. And exceedingly hard to replace.

100% agree with this. Let's not forget Briere is an excellent PP specialist as well though. If we sign him we might still have the best PP, we just don't play for the big point shot anymore.

Ok fellow Quebecois... if offering 8 million holds true... then the Media better not say BG didnt try it all!.... Still if Briere doesnt accept, I hope they dont turn things around by saying maybe Esposito might have been a cheaper and fruitfull option

Don't know if it's already been discussed, but Schneider's off the market. He'll make over 5 million with Anahiem on a 2 year contract. For that price, I'm okay not having him... Rafalski, please??? Hannan???

SO DRURY and Souray? No news?

I realize all the Amens for the Briere deal, but where does no movement leave the habs?

If we lose Souray and we don't add anything it will be a long long long year as the rangers and flyers work us over all year long.
