Do we really need our 2008 first pick ?

I hate these goofy loop holes in the NEW Nhl. If I was a GM this is what I would do. Time three or four big contracts with your top players so that they all become UFA's at the end of a certain year. In those contract talks a new "5 year deal would be negotiated and agreed upon before the trading deadline of that year. A part of the agreement would state the player must honor signing back with the team during the summer, most likely a handshake.

How does everyone win?

Let's say Saks, Kovalev, and Markov's contracts end in the same year and have agreed to come back in the summer. We trade Markov to Atlanta for Hossa, Kovalev to Calgary for Tanguay and Saku to San Jose for Marleau. Season ends all players resign and we now have all 6 players to go and win the cup ourselves without losing anybody.

I know it's a little more complicated with the salary cap and players being tempted with crazy money as UFA'S, but in certain circumstances where players are extremely loyal like Saks and Markov this could be pulled of for the name of family. In this case . The HABS.

Saks loves Montreal. Markov could have tested free agency and sign with OV in Washington but he did not. Kovalev loves Montreal and might do it if he knew the big plan. The one thing to consider is how to keep all of this bullet proof, Hush-Hush, and under the salary cap.

And you would be in trouble for tampering...I doubt the NHL would take kindly to that kind of tampering...with proof or without. As much as I dislike Betteman he's not stupid. He'd eat that organization for lunch.

I gues other GM's have the right to look at any player contracts? no ?

Yes, but the promise to come back, and money involved would be between player and GM and a handshake. That's why you could only do it for the good of the team and with very, very loyal players that understand the consequences of being busted. It's very very possible. What's stopping T.O from doing it with Sundin Now?

They send Sundin and Blake to Atlanta for Hossa and a first rounder. Sundin agrees to come back for a certain amount of money on a handshake. Toronto now has Sundin, Hossa, a 1st rounder and got rid of Blake's salary. Leafs just got better for nothing and dumped Blake's salary. Sundin wants to stay in Toronto....he would keep his mouth shut and he gets to play with Hossa. How would anybody ever find out? I think it would be extremely risky but very possible with guys like Fletcher, and Sundin that don't really have anything to lose but make the Leafs better fast for nothing.

Dude, Handshakes don't mean shit in the real world...especially not when we are talking about millions of Dollars. trust me on this one!

We don't NEED this pick, but we also don't NEED to acquire a superstar at the deadline. We are going to be just fine and personally, I would stand pat (aside for bringing in a faceoff specialist for a mid or late pick).

The Blues kind of did that the last 2 seasons.

do we NEED to make a trade?

I am quoting myself...just so no one FLIPS out

all I have to say is that with out current roster we are

1) 3 points back from OTTAWA!!!!! :o

2) have a game at hand against OTTAWA!!!!! :o

3) Have a 7-2-2 streak going

4) Are kickin ass and takin names!

why do we NEED a trade!?!?!? All we NEED is to maybe get rid of Ryder for a grinder to play with Latendresse and Lapierre and then we are fine with a Higgins-Koivu-Kostitsyn trio!

SAKS-AVENUE is completely right and its totally within the rules to do so. If you disagree look at St Louis and Doug Weight. :P

Weight nabbed the Blues several extra 1st rounders by signing with the Blues for 1 year and then get traded at the deadline only to return the following year. Weight always planned on playing in St Louis but he purposely signed 1 year contracts so he could be traded for the good of the team. Poor Weight was absolutely furious when he was traded to the Ducks. He didnt spend almost 3 months away from his St Louis home for the last 2 years to be traded away the next year. St Louis is on the verge of doing something and a lot of it the have Weight to thank. I guess no good deed goes unpunished because they shipped Weight out before he reap the benefits of his personal sacrifices.

Further proof its Ok to do just read the Sundin headlines for the last 2 months.

Stillman would add some scoring punch. I could see the Canes dealing him if they continue their downward spiral. It'd have to be a decent pick and/or prospect going back though.

I absolutely agree aboot acquiring Stillman but ironically its for a completely different reason. Bob should get Stillman just so the basturd cant knock the Habs out of the playoffs for the 3rd time in a row. ;)

Besides, why give up any picks to get somebody when the Foppa sweepstakes are starting to heat up. ^_^

Actually, our record over the past 13 games is 9 wins, 2 losses and 2 other OT/SO losses. That'S pretty damn good !!!
