Habsfan84
Interesting way to look at that. 1st has been pretty rough on the Habs!

BCHabnut
I know. Imagine, we could have had Mike Bossy on the RW and Denis Savard at C for the entire 80's. :( 88 to 98 are a desert. That list is amazing! The only 1st that you could argue was as good as our 2nd pick would be Napier and Langway. And we gave up Bossy for him? Holy crow. Colin
Andrei just has to stop being a pansy and get into traffic. Then he'll be effective. He looked too afraid to take anyone on, and instead coughs up the puck when someone comes near.
Easy Ryder
I have to wonder if the " flu " was really that bad or it was a message for him to play for the team not for himself. Anyway seeing what the other players did will have no excuse for him to do the same that his teammates are doing. Even Plekanek got in the box for roughness. Zowpeb
Svoboda, Cassels and Stevenson were all pretty capable NHLers. In fact, Svoboda and Cassels had pretty decent careers...and Stevenson was a very respectable checking line player. Plus, Chipchura and Fischer do NOT belong on any list like this yet...both still have the potential to turn out pretty solid careers. IMHO, the jury will be out on Fischer for another 4-5 years...the kid was 18 when drafted and the 20th pick overall, he likely won't fully develop until he's 25 or 26 years old. Come talk to me about him being a legit bust in 2013/2014... No one really expected Chipchura to be anything more then a good leadership guy who is a great 3rd line C to a solid 2nd line C...is it really so hard to see him still develop into one of those things? In fact, going back through the 70's is really not a great indicator since the draft did not gain real prevelance for NHL teams until the mid-late 80's. Not only that, but the Habs typically selected in the mid to late half of the first round. Should the Habs have a better record in the draft? YES. But it's worth noting that most players, since the mid-late 80's, and selected out of the top 10 are really not "great" players... Plus, you also left out 2005, 1999 Through 2003, 1993 and 1997...leaving out years to "make a point" is being unnecessarily biased. Why leave out Koivu, Ward, Hainsey, Hossa, Komisarek, Higgins, A Kost, Price...and if you want to include Fischer then you might as well have included McDonaugh but I suppose people still rate him high so it would have detracted from your point. Don't get me wrong, I agree that the Habs 1st round picks are less then stellar BUT it's not quite as bad as you make out. Factor in that the draft was largely irrelevant till the mid-80's, the Habs drafted in the mid-late rounds from the mid-80's through early 90's, that Rejean Houle ruined the Habs drafts of the mid 90's and you can account for most of the draft history. sbhatt
No one really expected Chipchura to be anything more then a good leadership guy who is a great 3rd line C to a solid 2nd line C...is it really so hard to see him still develop into one of those things? No chance in hell of him being a 2nd liner on any NHL team ever, and 3rd line is pushing it. He's painfully slow, and lacks the hands and offensive vision to make up for it that in the way that Lang does. As far as the current team goes, I'd rather see Lapierre and Metropolit in the 3rd and 4th line centre roles next season than see Chipchura again. saskhab
Did you miss 1993 on purpose? Yes, he did. He missed every year where the 1st round pick was actually the best player they took. What's sad is that in 1997, when they picked Jason Ward 11th overall, he actually DID turn out to be the best player the Habs took that year (well, Ben Guite was pretty similar in terms of NHL impact, but has played less games). By not listing 1993, he's saying Saku Koivu was better than every other Habs pick that year. Just like by not listing 2002, he's saying Chris Higgins was the best player the Habs picked that year. That 1987 draft was an incredible haul (not quite 1984 good but in a similar league). Over 4000 games played between those 4 players. Even in 1971, when they picked Lafleur 1st overall, they had two other firsts that year and used them on Chuck Arnason and Murray Wilson. In round 2, they picked Larry Robinson.
