Machine of Loving Grace
Bogged down in rivalries? You are joking? Yes fans hate those match ups, maybe can convince Bettman to arrange it so that Habs not play Leafs or Bruins next year? And add in New Jersey & LA instead. I'd love that. Less pressure the better. habs rule
Exactly. Would mean Montreal would be bogged down in rivalries. Every team in the NHL wants to beat Montreal, it is just the way it is.
DON
Pretty weak reasoning not to want a team in Quebec, "Oh my, it would be too tough a schedule!" Pretty lame. You do realize they would be an expansion team and will get their ass kicked for a decade or more, if that makes you feel better. Must love seeing Canadian women's team playing Japan then, always beat them 15-1 or something like that. Very entertaining and riveting stuff, as long as can avoid playing team USA is all good I suppose, dont want to see a competitive match up they might actually lose. The Chicoutimi Cucumber
I love the rivalry with the Bruins. Two great franchises going at it - despite all the Toronto propaganda, THAT is the greatest rivalry in the game. But I can do without some of the Habs' other, stupider rivalries. The rivalry with Toronto is, at this point, purely a media creation. It's a product of, first, the Toronto media trying to pretend that the Leafs are a relevant team, somehow on the same plane as the much more successful Canadiens, and that it's still 1967; and second, of Montreal fans' quite natural aggravation with the Toronto-centred media-driven hype. The result is that we've had a much tougher time with TO over the years than we should have done, because the Leafs are so jacked up to play us, while our guys are standing there going, 'huh? I'm supposed to be intense about playing these turds?' Then there's Ottawa, another team that is disproportionately cranked to play the Habs, while the Habs have bigger fish to fry than that nonentity of a franchise. The last thing we need is a team in Quebec, which will no doubt stink out the joint, but which will play every single game against the Canadiens with manic, ferocious intensity, and will consequently defeat us a disproportionate amount of the time. Non merci.

It's all about the Cup.
DON
No worry, as long as Bettman has USA options like Vegas, QC aint getting a franchise. If Leafs and Bruins folded you would be pleased? Crazy talk!
hab29RETIRED
Actually I for one have zero interest in woman's hockey, regardless of who they are playing. I think Quebec would be easier on the schedule and I would welcome the rivalry. I just hate the damn french political nonsense that comes with the nordiques. DON
Women's hockey thing was just an analogy, don't remember any worse French BS than have in Montreal, but could be correct and misremember that bit?

JoeLassister
In La Presse this morning, rumblings about Houston, 4th biggest city of the USA, wanting to get a team back. They had one back in the 70's in the WHA. They could use Rocket's arena or build another in the North of Houston.
dlbalr
Although it was mentioned during Bettman's press conference that the deadline for expressions of interest is August 10th, there seem to be some reports saying that the deadline is now this coming Monday. From the looks of things, Seattle isn't going to have their act together (aka, an arena plan) by then which would take them out of the equation if Monday is indeed the due date. http://www.king5.com/story/sports/2015/07/17/nhl-seattle-monday-expansion-arena/30315745/

Machine of Loving Grace
Please, no more frickin teams! You're getting two more whether you like it or not. Owners love money and it's free money. NHLPA loves it because it means more jobs for players. When both sides agree on something, it happens.

BlueKross
Being as you boys are running out of gas (things to talk about), you might want to think about how expansion might look 1. Roster- possible effects as early as this year 2. Re-alignment? 3. Expansion draft- waiver draft? How many and who would you protect? 4. Length of season 5. Playoff format
DON
Not knowledgeable enough to comment on some of it. But obviously add 2 west teams and if happens hope one is Seattle. But surely would like shorter season and best of 5 in 1st round, june hockey not a fan one bit.
Machine of Loving Grace
I love the expansion/waiver draft. This will be the first where teams need to make salary floor and players will be made available just because of their big contracts. It'll be exciting. This will be the first where teams need to make salary floor and players will be made available just because of their big contracts. It'll be exciting. NBA expansion teams weren't allowed to spend to the cap in their first two seasons and had their own separate cap level/floor. I'm not sure if the NHL will do that (since there hasn't been an expansion team in the cap era) but I wouldn't be surprised either if they did. Otherwise, the expansion teams would be forced to take some bad contracts simply to get to the floor. That doesn't entirely seem fair. I would just eliminate the cap floor for the first two years (expansion teams). You wouldn't want to restrict a new team from grabbing somebody, that all of sudden becomes available, because they are too close to the floor. I think it reasonable to assume that they will take on bad contracts to get other good players in a deal.
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
How about suggestions for franchise names? The Seattle Sockeye The Las Vegas Blackjacks The Houston Drillers Any higher bidders? (Of course, I'm not so naïve to think that cool names will actually be chosen. It'll probably be garbage like The Seattle Extreme, The Vegas iHockey, the Dallas Corporate Logos...millennial bullcrap of that nature rather than anything that speaks to the communities where the team lives). Machine of Loving Grace
It's believed that Las Vegas will be called the Black Knights. The potential owner named that his company to own the team. It's based on a nearby military college. So far none of the potential Seattle owners are submitting. None feel an arena will be done by 2017 to pay the $2m non refundable fee (you must also give $8m but that is refundable)

However, maybe this military college means a great deal to local yokel Vegas-ites, so I guess there's that; although it was my understanding that the team will try to plug into the tourist/casino crowd, in which case a gambling-based name seems like an absolute no brainer.
