Psycing
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=181354&hubname=nhl Great News!!! Looks like Downey will be back with the team sooner than we thought. Apparently he's only waiting on medical clearance now.

Bacchus
Good news. Heard a lot of people saying the hit was dirty. I hate dirty hits, but I found a little vid that suggests that it was a clean hit. Shoulder to head, not elbow. Downey didn't have much of a chance though, his head was down for a second, and Regehr came was camoflaged by one of his team mates who was skating near Downey. Unless I'm mistaken thats his left shoulder he's ramming there... a bit too hard but not from behind nevertheless Wrong thread, methinks. What's a Latendresse hit have to do with Downey not suffering from post-concussion symptoms? I'm glad Downey is ok, but I think this is much ado about nothing. The way some people react, you'd think he's the missing piece of the Stanley Cup run...

The way some people react, you'd think he's the missing piece of the Stanley Cup run... yes true... just that following Downey's hit Dimaio was talked about and how he might not make it back... hence Downey's return and how they are saying Tenderness gave hima backcheck... DiMaio that is.. Edited October 20, 2006 by CoRvInA
markierung
Clean, HARD hit. Hope to see Downey back soon. it was not clean he didn't have the puck when he got hit, it almost 2 metre's away. If Regher would have hit a star player, he would have got suspended
kaos
it was not clean he didn't have the puck when he got hit, it almost 2 metre's away. If Regher would have hit a star player, he would have got suspended He has just passed the puck, Regher was just finishing the check. It was a clean hit. If it had been the other way around, you'd be slapping Downey on the back saying what a great hit it was. Great that he may be ok and coming back sooner than anyone thought, but unless he's spelling Murray on the fourth line, or dressing as a 13th forward there is no room for this guy. This team has problems scoring goals right now
beliveau1
This was one of those hits that currently lies in the gray shaded zone somewhere between clean and dirty. By old timers standards it would be considered to verge on the dirty side, or at least fall under the unwritten code of old that frowned upon checks that were aimed at the head of an opponent. Growing up in a day when hip checks were common, it was considered unsportsman like to target your opponents head. To do so was grounds for a severe and deserved ass-kicking. The same could be said for those semi blind-sided hits that come from behind a player as he neared the boards. Hit them hard but hit them clean - and certainly don't jeopardize their ability to earn a living from the game was a given consideration that all players shared - even the toughest of them abided by that code Today's players though have lost that respect for the safety of their fellow players. Wrapped in a suit of armour, they have no qualms about hitting an opponent in the head if it helps their team to win. Consequences be damned..... And the problem is, it isn't restricted to just the pros. The last couple of years of coaching and managing for me personally have involved more head injuries than in all my previous years of both playing and administration. Injuries from head related hits have been on the rise and dramatically so. A large part of it is the lack of respect overall, however some of it is from the plastic shields that cover shoulder pads today, and the fact that players have unfortunately developed a somewhat false sense of safety in their helmets(which they don't wear properly to start with so that renders them basically ineffective.) Also contributing to this is a lax approach on the part of officials who tend to over look shoulder related hits, as well as not seeing any problem with the current trends to hit an opponent with both hands clasped together while holding the stick in, for lack of a better term, a semi-crosschecking motion which actually was originally penalized as roughing in my days.) Watch them closely and they will turn a blind eye to these type of hits which can result in far more injuries than any open ice hip check - yet as soon as they hear the crunch of a hip check up comes the arm to signal a penalty that is nowhere in the book. Unfortunately as a lost art today they don't know what to do so they either call it roughing or charging, when it is in fact not a penalty at all. So in essence, this was a hit that would not have been acceptable 25 years ago and if done it would have been handled without any delay by a teammate. After all the code of respect had been violate and the price was going to be paid for by the guilty party. Today it's just considered a hit that has become an acceptable part of the game - one the NHL doesn't seem to choose to punish... that is unless it is a marquee player who sells tickets! Reality is though that doesn't make it necessarily a clean hit - just one they have come to accept as clean over time, especially when given todays lower standards of respect for their opponent? Times have changed, and not necessarily for the best..... :nono: Edited October 21, 2006 by beliveau1
