Just like the L.A Kings hired that dope Anthony Robbins to motivate them a few years back. That sure worked. NO!. A smarter move would be to hire a on ice fight coach to teach Laps, Komi, Ryan, Begin Murray etc to beat the living piss out of someone when it's called for. That would motivate a whole lot more then getting them to look in the mirror and say "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darn it people like me" You honestly think Kovalev or Koivu will benefit from this? I doubt it's as simple as people make it out to be. I'm sure it's more thorough and rewarding that Ryan spouting off cliched statements. At least I hope it is. The Chicoutimi Cucumber Posted September 26, 2007 Share Posted September 26, 2007 Kelly Hrudey has said that Anthony Robbins was crucial in helping him to recover his game from a point at which he had completely lost confidence and was completely ineffective - namely, the start of the 1992-93 season. Considering that Hrudey went on to backstop the Kings to the Finals that very year, I'd say Robbins earned his cheque from the Kings. Having said that, this could just be a pretext for getting Ryan Walter on board. He was part of that blood-and-guts late-80s team that was defined by guys like Gainey and Carbo. Brisebois is as good as an assistant coach and Walter now gives us even more support for the young guys. Throw in Smolinski and Kostopoulos to our old team and I think we have enough leadership - or atleast as much as we had last year, anyway. Since Bob Gainey is here, we can see a trend of drafting and trading for players with character and leadership. Gainey, Carbonneau, Muller.. all ex captains. And in the current team, there are many national captains/leaders. But it's special that with so many leaders, there's no one emerging, or no real cohesion or team spirit. I don't think Walter is going to be a leader in the team. But he is defenetly going to help create a team spirit, commitment to team success, help leaders work together. This is a great move and shows that the management believe in the team they put together and now wants to move ahead and have success in the playoffs. I don't think we'll ever hear again our leader Saku say that we're not going to go far in the playoffs ! hehe Great move ! Innovative again ! When this team hit the ice excited they were great. When they hit the ice cold they stunk. It happened too often. We need the leaders to step up and they haven't. Well, I should say not consistantly enough for my liking. Why tie up a whole chunk of salary cap on an outside dressing room leader when you can maybe bring out the best in what you have and achieve the same result? That way that import leader doesn't take ice time from the kids. Seems like a sound move to me. Psycology or hippie stuff as someone so eliquently put it does have its place in sports. And as for me, if he gets in one players head enough to result in one great game that we would have lost, well Mr Gillette, I say keep spending your money. I really don't think Ryan Walter preaching to Alex Kovalev is going to change a damn thing. But it can't hurt so I don't really care. That being said the biggest problem this team faced last year was consistent effort team wide. If they bring it 100% every game they will make the playoffs easily. That sure worked. NO!. Actually, that year Robbins worked with the Kings is 92-93... remember when the Kings' seaosn ended then? Heheh. Anyway. Great move in my books. We're going more and more toward a "team first" mentality with coachable character players without egos. Its the old school habs mentality. Players are motivated by each other and are accountable to the rest of the team; not to a clique of "leaders" or the coach.
