Habs invite 44 players to rookie camp

Cant think Nygren has endeared himself to Mgmt and a defensive liability like he is, cant surpass Pateryn/Tinordi on depth chart can he?

But it does seem like trading a d-prospect wouldn't be a big surprise, unless Thrower-Bennett-Dietz don't develop/perform as expected in pro rookie seasons (Dietz only played 1/2 season so far)?

Or a different #7 D is signed (there are some decent #6/7 options out there). They could also easily opt to have Drewiske reprise the role he had with LA (that had him playing around 1 in every 5/6 games). Nygren is also a wildcard. If he shows flashes at training camp that there may be something there, that #7 role will be his since he has been adamant about not playing in the AHL.

For all of the flack Beaulieu has had for being grumpy about demotions, it would be a real slap in the face for Nygren to make the club just because he doesn't want to be in Hamilton. I think this Canadiens team would be more than willing to drop a guy like Nygren than give him what he wants just because he has a point shot. It just doesn't seem Bergevin's character. I expect Nygren to be told go play in Hamilton or never make the NHL.

Nygren is a nobody. I haven't read any source other than EOTP that are high on him. He's a long, long, long shot to make the team in the next couple of years. I wouldn't be surprised if they just terminated his contract.

If they were going to do that, they'd have done so already and we'd have seen Nygren re-up in the SHL. I'm not certain that the Habs are high on him either, we'll see what happens at training camp. He didn't look too bad last year at camp, if he has improved since then he could make a case for a spot.

I am assuming Nygrens' trade value is nil and why he hasnt been sent packing yet? Habs do not need another Beaulieu type PP specialist d-man do they?

Ideally, the hope is that Beaulieu could be more than just a PP specialist whereas that may be Nygren's ceiling unless he can take some more steps forward with his defensive zone plays. Even if Nygren just is a PP player, there's bound to be at least some value in that but he'll need to play in the NHL for bit for that value to come about. A Tinordi/Nygren 6/7 to start the year is something I could see happening.

As long as Tinordi is a regular and gets 14-15minutes/game for 82 games I wouldn't care who was 7th or Tinordi's partner.

And I really could care less how much Nygren/Beaulieu play in NHL, or if both stayed in SHL/Hamilton for full year might be best and also good by me. Give both time to head screwed on straight.

Maybe Beaulieu will come into camp, be more focused in own end and surprise?

After the disastrous powerplay we had in the latter half of of last season, a real powerplay "specialist" might be highly valued in Montreal.

Even with the "most dynamic offensive defenseman in the NHL" Montreal's powerplay was often more effective for their opponents than themselves. If Nygren has the ability to change that, we should try him out. (I'm unconvinced.)

Nygren is in tough with the Canadiens, they have Markov and Subban to play the PP, and Beaulieau coming along in the system. Plus Tom Gilbert now, who is primarily and offensive defenseman. He can be a decent NHL defenseman, but it will probably be elsewhere.

Yeah. I really don't think it's the defense corps fault that Montreal's PP sucked so badly. I think they have to look at the forwards.

One must wonder what Montreal ends up trying:

Markov - Subban

Beaulieu - Gilbert

or the rumours are true that they want Gilbert and Subban together on a PP.

Also I can't be the only one who just because this is the Habs I pronounce Gilbert not "Gill-Bert" but "Jill-Bear"

You don't really want Markov and Subban together on the first pairing. That leaves your second pairing far weaker than is desirable.

Also, unless he drasticly improves this season, you don't really want Beaulieu in your top 4. Or even top 6.

Pairings should be:

Emelin - Subban

Markov - Gilbert

Tinordi - Weaver

I think he meant on the PP.

No one would have Beaulieu and Gilbert as 2nd pairing d, unless you really hate Price and want to hang him out to dry or want him to have to make a ton of saves.

Even so, putting Beaulieu on the PP is difficult if you dress Tinordi instead. :)

(Not that I'm suggesting putting Tinordi on the PP. Ever.)

It may sound crazy but if he's back in Hamilton at some point, I'd like to see him get 2nd unit PP time. It would be a good chance for him to really work on his passing, an area that really needs some work.

I'll take your word because no one was able to developp prospects as well as you were in Phoenix ;)

You made me go back and look at old HWL sims as I seemed to recall throwing defensive prospects on the PP on the farm. Lo and behold, I did just that...with Tinordi no less.

subban + markov will most likely play 1:20-1:35 of the pp..beaulieu /gilbert will get the crumbs..

A lot of you think Tinordi can't move the puck at all, really?

I thought he looked decent in all the pre-season games he played a year ago, and wasn't that bad in his time in the NHL.

I realize he wasn't ready, but from what I saw of him, it was his adaptation to that level and his decision making that was weak, he is actually pretty fast for his size, and seemed to move the puck ok for a rookie, I've seen a lot worse....

Not suggesting he be a steady PP option, but damn guys, we saw Gorges shoot it into the corner on the PP how many times? 12,000 maybe? Subban, Markov, and Gilbert will be better on the PP than Subban, Markov, and Gorges, and Emelin can play PP a little as well.

No way I see Beaulieu ahead of Tinordi in terms of the total in what they can bring, and what the team needs....

But, if a forward has a choice whos corner to dump puck into, Tinordi will have a target on his back.

Till he can prove he can move it out of zone without turning it over.

He was even getting pushed around by average sized NHLers last year (and definitely couldn't handle Lucic/Hartnell-type forwards), so a lot will depend if he is stronger on his skates this fall.
