Metallica
I ask myself this question now that Toronto signed Tavares are we good enough to beat Toronto Tampa Washington Pittsburgh In a 7 game series? My answer is no, not even if we make the trade for O'Reilly. We're not as deep as these teams are to make a playoff run. Trading for O'reilly would just weaken us and not make us stronger. Its time for a rebuild. Next 2 years will be a deep draft year. Trade Pacioretty for top prospects and 1st round pick Trade weber for top prospects and 1st round pick Trade price for top prospects and 1st round pick Lets build this up right so we can contend for a cup every year.

The Chicoutimi Cucumber
The team is being blown up as we speak. The Habs have given up on ROR and seem not to have been seriously in the running for any of this year's significant UFAs. All of our signings are marginal depth signings. MaxPac is probably on the way out. This means that literally the ONLY important veterans left on the club are Price and Weber. There is nothing left to blow up. We're basically where the Vancouver Canucks were a couple of years ago.
Chris
They have been retooling since 93. Maybe a different plan would work
Prime Minister Koivu
Yeah I'm with Commandant's plan of picking up other teams problems for picks and trading Weber and Patches for picks and young talent. We are a league wide laughing stock

Barring some unexpected UFA signings or moves that bring back established middle-aged NHLers, the team has basically bottomed out in terms of talent. The 'rebuild' era is upon us. It's early days, but so far it looks to me like Friedman's report that MB had somehow sold Molson on missing the playoffs in return for picks and prospects was accurate. Chris
Bottom 4 team, Only 3 legit high end players, They are closer lottery pick than a playoff team, Why would Taveres talk to Montreal

I still think Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa are more laughable than us - those teams are messed up in their own unique ways. I would also say Buffalo is pathetic. How many top picks do they need to get and still not make the playoffs? Now that they have Dahlin, let’s see what they can do. My guess, miss the playoffs again for the bazillionth time. Vancouver has some really good, top-end young talent. No one in their right mind thinks they are a bigger joke than the Habs. Edmonton, everybody can see they have impressive pieces; no one's laughing at them either. Ottawa, I'll grant. It's not just Tavares. We seem not to have been in seriously on Stastny or Bozak and are out of the ROR sweepstakes. In other words, MB/Molson appear at this juncture to be perfectly willing to ride things out with a POS roster rather than commit to expensive older veterans or move out picks/prospects for short-term improvement. That's what a rebuild looks like.

Yeah but we're at a disadvantage then they are because we can only bring in French speaking people to run and coach this team. I don't know about you guys but I am sick and tired of hearing the same old joke "OH YEAH BUT CAN HE SPEAK French each time we make a trade or hire someone.
Chris
oh, im with you on that. I posted a stat that shows exactly why they need a turnover, Montreal is #29 in draft picks playin gon their NHL roster over the past 10 years. You don't want this crew / drafting team making decisions on young players. There record speaks for itself. I though they were average until i read that

I though they were average until i read that Drafting and development is the deepest underlying problem of the Bergevin era. But it looks as though he is the man who Molson trusts with the rebuild era. In other words, having run the excellent 2014 team into the ground with his incompetence, he is now being given a Second Act - the mandate of which is to draft and develop a winner. Our only hope is that he has learned from his innumerable mistakes and that the next six years are much, much more competent than the first six.

I don’t know if it’s true that Molson said that he’s okay with missing the playoffs this year but I realized what you’re saying when we drafted Kotkaniemi. After a terrible season, Zadina and some free agent pick ups would have had us going in an upward trend from this year to next year. Kotkaniemi, while people love him, was always destined to be a longer term project. I realized when we picked him, that this year wasn’t in the plans. REV-G
Personally, other than signing Tavares, which I think most of us suspected he wasn't coming to Montreal given the position we're in right now, I'm glad we didn't sign Stastny and his 15 or 16 goals. I am quite happy that we're not locking in long term to players that in 2-3 years may be decline. I'm also ok with having a bad team and missing the playoffs next year mainly because of the 2017 and 2018 draft results. I think with what we have now in a young team and what we've drafted this year and last we are going to start to turn the corner with a young exciting team in the 2019-2020 season. If we miss the playoffs next year and are close to the bottom of the league we'll get another very good draft pick and depending on what we get if we trade Max, likely another 1st round pick, we should be positioned to be able to compete and not just make the playoffs. I would have been disappointed if we had given up draft picks to get 32 [?] year old Stastney. When MB made the trade with Winnipeg I wondered if he was helping Winnipeg out to resign Stastney. I have been very critical of MB this year and thought he should have been fired. But "if" he has a plan to rebuild this team through the draft with our mostly young team now, I'm willing to go through another bad year to build a team that should contend for many years. Maybe there's a chance we get a shot at the first overall pick next year!! It is possible!!

Link67
Lets just stop with over reactions, look around people, some of you are whining about having a low key UFA day, trying to compare what the top teams in the east are doing compared to us, and in the same sentence want a rebuild? Is this not the exact steps you take when you are re-tooling or rebuilding? We signed no one over the age of 25 today besides bringing Pleky back for 1 year, we didn't go in hard after anyone that didn't want to come in on our ideal and optimal terms. This team is doing exactly what you do when you are rebuilding, whether they do this for 2 years or 4 years is really the only question, but make no mistake, it is happening right now before your very eyes. They are taking the proper steps to ensure we come out of this in much better shape than we were down the road. But for the love of god can we have some realistic expectations? You think they are moving Price and Weber unless someone makes an outlandish offer? No they are not, they will sell off all expiring assets, stockpile picks and prospects that way, use available cap space to buy picks and prospects from other teams needing to dump salary. Stop with the emotional cries to drop a nuke on the thing, and let them meticulously take it apart and redo it better than before. I don't understand how you can be so upset with the quiet UFA day we had, and going on about being a laughing stock of the league poking barbs into every little signing we make because of how unhelpful it is, yet also want a full on rebuild? One does not go with the god damn other, so can this fanbase, for once, get its head screwed on straight, be logical, and pick a side to this thing? You either wanted them to go out and sign JVR, Neal, and De Haan, while trading for O'Rielly later today, or you want them to sell off assets and remain a bottom 10 team this season to help you out at the draft next summer. The whole "RAAAAH WE SUCK WE SIGNED NO IMPACT PLAYERS!!!" followed by "RAAAAH BURN IT ALL TO THE GROUND WE MUST REBUILD THIS SUMMER!!!"...... Makes no sense to me at all.
