I don't see Perry wanting to come back.  The guy has been chasing another cup.  We are not in the same position we were in the last time he signed with us.

Agreed.

Well, I certainly disagree.  Here is why:  of the last 3 contracts he signed, only 1 was with a bona fide Cup contender.  i.e. nobody thought Dallas would make it to the Cup, and even less saw the Habs doing it.  After the run of 21, did Perry ditch the Habs, or did a dumb ass GM mess up Perry returning to the Habs?  That GM is no longer with the Habs.   Plus, after TB played at the Bell Center last year, which of Tampa's players visited the Habs dressing room area to talk to their Coach, Captain, and Caufield?

Dallas have had a good team for several years, and went to the Cup Final the year Perry was there.  He could have easily re-signed with Anaheim, but choose to leave the only team he ever knew, because Dallas was better.   While they weren't a favourite, It wasn't that big a surprise that they were a playoff team with a good roster.

When he signed with us he really didn’t have any other options either. After his play in those playoffs there was a lot of interest, and I’m sure there still is. Friedman was wondering in one of his podcasts whether this is the year he finally goes to the leafs.

Perry was bought-out by Anaheim ... meaning he could not re-sign with them.

Exactly.

Plus, after the run of 21 he wanted to resign with the Habs.  That's not exactly Cup chasing.  Perry didn't contact Tampa either, they called his agent.  Saying yes to the team that beat him in the Cup the 2 previous years I still wouldn't call Cup chasing in that regard.  To call it Cup chasing Perry would have be the 1 to contact the team he thinks will win.

After Perry was bought out by the Ducks there were numerous teams that were interested in him.  Dallas wasn't his only option, I recall the Wild wanted him + at least 1 or 2 other teams.   Perry did well in the playoffs with Dallas so teams definitely had interest in him before he signed with the Habs.  After the run of 21 if TB hadn't wanted him other teams would have.  He'll be wanted this off season too and he will probably sign 2 or 3 more 1 yrs deals before he retires.

You actually can sign back with the team that buys you out, it just can't be done at the same time.  Michael Stone was bought out by Calgary in August of 2019 and wound up signing back with them six weeks later on a minimum-salary contract.  The NHL investigated to check if this was a combo agreement and when they saw it wasn't, it was approved.  Stone actually signed a second contract with Calgary a year and a half later while still being paid by them under the buyout.

Count me among those who do not believe Perry will sign with the league's 5th-worst team. He'll have options that put him in a more realistic position to make the playoffs.

You are familiar with the concept of the trade deadline right?  You know, when non playoff teams trade good players to playoff bound teams?

Perry's childhood favourite team is the Habs; who currently have a ton of rookies.  Jon Cooper calls him their 3rd coach, and of their coaches he is the only 1 allowed on the ice. Plus, how does Perry score most of his goals?

Do the Habs have a large 1st over all pick that could learn what Perry does?  How about a small forward RHP, or a small aging player with a bad contract that could be made useful again?  Moreover, do the Habs have a huge rookie d-man that could potentially be taught how to do the same and be turned into the next Byfuglian?

My idea is to Keith Tkachuk him twice and then sign him again the year after that and they win the 40 year Cup reunion.  Then, 3 years later in the 2nd 40 year Cup reunion - which will have a different outcome than the original series, Perry will win for the 1st time - as Coach.  That is why I can see him wanting to return.

Perry could easily short and long Cup chase with the Habs.

Well well, look at this:  Cup chasing Perry was traded for and then signed by the 3rd worst team in the league because a rebuilding team with a lot of young rookies doesn't need mentors and veteran leadership.

Notice that it is a 1 year deal so the Hawks can trade him to a contender at the trade deadline.

It would still probably be a decent idea for the Habs to try signing him next year.

Hawks have tons of cap room and need to get to the floor. No one else was going to pay Perry $4m/yr. At this point he should be under $1.5m.
