Prime Minister Koivu
I don't even know what to say.....I am disappointed with the lack of a big name. Huge, "ridiculous" contracts aside we need some serious help here. I know there are still some names out there that could help us but I'm pissed that we are still currently where we are. I do not blame Bob, it is not his fault. Blame the media, the location, blame all the other crap. It still does not change the fact that as things currently stand our Habs will suck the anus again. Our future is bright some will say and I agree with that but it does not help us next year. If we don't get some help on this team, 2008 will be an embarrassment. :puke:
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
Sykora said he'd love to play here. Lots of good players left, like I said. Sykora would be an OK choice as a short-term move. 2 years, say. The guy's scored 35 goals twice, he'd give Pleks a little more time to mature and add overall offensive depth. But Nylander - now there would be a great little pick up.
Tony
Well, it sounds like the team is down to the "Find people who can stimulate Kovalev" options mainly and finding defensive solutions.
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
Karyia to the Blues! Wow, another *GREAT ORGANIZATION* attracts a UFA. I tell you, these players are impossible to fathom. They go to mediocre teams for less money (Smyth)...they turn down a chance to be national heroes because they want 8 years at $6.5 instead of 6 years at $7 (Briere)...they cheerfully go to a dismal franchise (Kariya)...what's next? Nylander signing in Minsk because he likes the local vodka? Gainey is probably scratching his head. With this bizarre and seemingly random array of motivations and rationales at play, it's no WONDER he can't attract anyone to a great city and a very strong organization with oodles of young talent and tons of money to throw at UFAs in a hockey-mad market. It's like trying to negotiate in a madhouse.
xXx..CK..xXx
Well I guess it is safe to say that Kariya will NEVER be a habs player. He seems to like it in that part of the US. By the way, the atmosphere at Blues games isn't horrible either, though they don't attract many people.
simonus
seems to me that BG will use the Habs' cap space to take existing contracts off other GMs' hands in trades rather than FA signings. Would not be suprised to see Gainey play the part of Cap doctor for ailing teams.
tokyohabs
And it looks like the only way we can get anyone to consider playing here is through a trade. For whatever reasons, we can clearly forget UFA's and most likely RFA's. If Bob can make us a winner again, with both hands tied behind his back like this, it will be very impressive. PK Subban is the MAN!

Quebecois
Gotta be a trade, or maybe a couple of good value signings. Something has to happen. Im a pretty patient guy, but have we ever made a splash on July 1st? Its getting pretty pathetic...
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
pitts just got him http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?fid=4965 Whaaa? They're planning to use this legendary defensive specialist as their third-line C behind Crosby and Malkin, or what? Between insane GMs dishing insane contracts and insane players making insane decisions for insane reasons, the NHL has simply gone down the rabbit hole. Off with their heads! I still hope BG doesn't over pay for tier two players... I'm even willing to wait a few more years until all the REAL HAbs fans players reach the Glory in the Bleu Blanc Rouge! sbhatt
Add this to the list of reasons a player might not want to come to Montreal: Carbonneau An inexperienced coach who preaches defense first and who showed that he has a hard time communicating with veteran players. Not exactly the kind of coach elite offensive players want to play for.

Trizzak
Boy, do I ever feel left out as a Habs fan. If it comes down to Plan D like last year with Samsanov....I will be very displeased.

Take a look at what's left out there...plans A, B, and C have already signed elsewhere.
Trizzak
Selanne is plan B I think... Nylander, Zubrus, or Handzus could be plan B as well. Plan D is someone like Tony Amonte or Peter Bondra
lazy26
According to Spector, EDM signs Nylander. I think we're boned for centres... Bob's gonna have to swing a trade now, or go with plan D. Edited July 2, 2007 by lazy26

Pretty close, but not quite. Zubrus, Handzus, Lang, (Yashin, Peca, Lindros....) all still available!
Trizzak
Just a quick note: Not much chance of Shanahan going back to the Rangers with 14 mill being used on 2 players and a couple key RFA's to re-sign (Lundqvist, Prucha). Does Gainey make on offer?
ch_nl
Not looking good. Right now they can keep the team as it is. Don't know if any of the availables would be upgrades. But there are som interesting longshots left. Would Robert Lang ignite Kovalev? Could Gainey sign Souray and then ship him to San Jose for Marleau? Would Ossi Väänänen be an upgrade over Janne Niinimaa? Does Pierre Turgeon has one year left? Could Alexei Yashin sign here for little? Will the Red Wings afford Markov now when they have signed Rafalski? Edited July 2, 2007 by ch_nl
mathieu30
Not looking good. Does Pierre Turgeon has one year left? If I'm not mistaken Turgeon has hung up his skates. I don't think things are looking that bad. In my humble opinion Gainey and Cie are slowly building a contender. There will be upgrades. The key word here is 'patience'. A couple of superstars don't make a championship team. I'm pretty sure Mr. Gainey knows what he's doing. Go :hlogo: go! Hamilton Bulldogs - 2007 Calder Cup Champions

Hamilton Bulldogs - 2007 Calder Cup Champions I have faith in Gainey as well, but I have chosen to believe in the reports he tried to sign Briere. And year after year the first choise seems to sign elsewhere. But if Souray head west I will probably think of this UFA frenzy as a failure. Winners? Philly and Colorado. The Flyers can now have a line with two of my favourites. Gagne and Briere.
Dalhabs
Dont kill me now but I wouldnt mind Eric Lindros. So what if he didnt want to play for Quebec (a hated rival at that time) 15 years ago? I bet he would love to come here centering our 2nd or 3rd line at an ok price.

kaos
BE a few days before this thread see's a signing. Montreal is going to be out of it for awhile I think I was wrong here. NOw that all the decent free agents are gone, I hope I don't see any signings on this thread. Was Gainey asleep? Or do no free agents want to come here? Not sure which is worse?
