simonus
I remember in junior he was supposedly the best skater of that amazing 2003 draft class. But he sounds like a guy who has the tools but just can't put them together. It really is confusing to see that he only got 3 points last year. This guy was supposed to be an offensive catalyst. I knew something was wrong when the Blues dealt him for Bacashihua a couple years back, since it was obvious that Bacashihua was a 1st rounder that had plateaued and needed a major kick start. It's possible that if the team carries 8 D like last year, Belle will be on the team. He could easily end up being a guy snatched up off waivers if he doesn't make the team out of camp. It's a reclamation project for sure. There is talent there, it just needs to be realized. is he subject to waivers? Hasn't played that many games, but I guess he is far enough from his draft class. Chris
Wow, i am stunned a minor league move has made it to 3 pages. As tradition would have it some folks think he is steal, no miss prospect. The others have the conspiracy theory going. It must be summer time. Anyway, this is simply a minor league move adding depth to the AHL team. When another roster player gets moved or waived, then you can assume something may be going on.
CerebusClone
I could see Shawen Belle becoming usefull as a multi-purpose reserve player, like Mark Streit last year (without being a powerplay specialist). He could fill-in as a defenseman every once in a while, but I could also see him being successful as a 4th line power-forward. He has great size, combined to great speed and more than decent abilities; perhaps he just doesn't have the on-ice vision and hockey sense to play defense, but could do much better as a reserve power-forward winger. I don't know... I could see him as a replacement for Dandeneault, who we have to dump somewhere if we want to sign Mats Sundin later this summer (otherwise we don't have enough cap room). However, perhaps Gainey acquired him to boost our defense core in Hamilton.
simonus
there is so little info available on what Belle has done in his pro career that I think it is very premature to make any predictions. He looks like a reclamation project, but I want to start getting regular reports from training camp and Hamilton before I try to figure out where he fits in the organization. Colin
Re: Dandenault; see: LA. The Kings are $10M or so UNDER the cap floor. Rumours they'll be picking up Khabibulin's exorbitant contract are out there, and if Sundin does decide to spend his winter in Montreal, I'm sure Dandy could be shipped to the west coast Royalty to help in their cap floor pursuit. It's possible, but LA doesn't have to take just anyone at this point. Doughty will almost certainly make the team with an over $3m+ cap hit due to performance bonuses. Bernier could make this team as well with decent performance bonuses. They aren't nearly as below the cap as everyone thinks when all his said and done. That being said, they could use Dandy, as they look to have holes both on their checking lines and their 3rd pairing/7th d-man. http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2008/07/kings-d...fear-floor.html

Yeah, it was a good move for both teams because they got to swap prospects with NHL potential that didn't have much chance of making it with their team. But I see that most people here are valuing Belle as highly as they would a 30th overall pick of this year's draft - this guy is 23 and coming off a pretty disappointing season in the AHL. It was a good move by Gainey but let's not put NHL expectations on him. Keep in mind that at one point, Locke had even higher potential and the Minnesota fans are probably smiling to themselves thinking they may have Danny Briere on their hands. He only had three AHL points last year, down from 18 the year before, but that's all we know. Did he not get the icetime? Was he not playing well? Was he no longer on the PP? Something else? As Simonus says, we need to wait for the training camp to start to see what his potential really is. Still, with Locke not likely to make the team in the future, this looks like a positive move. Habsfan84
So Locke was going nowhere(within this orgaization) but this Belle is susposidly a good player. Good move Gainey.

JLP
Belle was in good company on Canada's (gold medal) World Juniors team in 2005: 2005 Team Canada: Goalies: Jeff Glass , Réjean Beauchemin Defensemen: Cam Barker , Shawn Belle , Dion Phaneuf , Brent Seabrook , Shea Weber , Danny Syvret Forwards: Patrice Bergeron , Jeff Carter , Jeremy Colliton , Sidney Crosby , Nigel Dawes , Stephen Dixon , Colin Fraser , Ryan Getzlaf , Andrew Ladd , Clarke MacArthur , Corey Perry , Michael Richards , Anthony Stewart Belle scored a goal and was 5th best on the team in +/-

The forwards weren't too shabby either ~ possibly the best U-20 team Canada ever iced. I'm delighted that Belle was in on that.
saskhab
I almost forgot how amazing that team was. Look at that defense!!! Actually, it's somewhat surprising that only 3 of those guys have established themselves in the NHL so far. Barker is close, but Belle and Syvret are quite a ways off. Granted, the 3 that have established themselves are really darn good...
CerebusClone
It shows just how amazing and deep that 2003 entry draft was, quite a few of those guys were drafted that year... and that doesn't even include the top three (Fleury, Staal, Horton) or other great young players like Coburn, Burns, etc. And then there's all the Americans and Europeans... that was a truly great draft year for the NHL... Funny thing: Alexander Ovechkin was actually selected by the Panthers in the last round of the 2003 draft; the team used leap years to justify their selection, pretending that those extra days compensated for the 2 days short of the cutoff date. habs rule
must be an awful slow time of the year if we are spending this much time talking a bout a guy who may never make the big club.

CerebusClone
While the Panthers were pursuing fruitless ventures, Timmins snagged Jaro Halak in the final round instead. Well, it was a risk worth taking... while the leap year argument was a bit if a stretch, big-money lawyers have won crazier cases in court (although I don't think this went that far, the Panthers claimed Ovechkin, stated their case, and were rejected by the NHL)... Let's look at a possible line up...(disregarding the fact that some of them have represented other countries..) Goalie - Jose Theodore Defence - Chris Chelios Defence - Steve Staios Forward - Eric Lindros Forward - Jimmy Carson Forward - Steve Stamkos Honorable mentions go out to my man Tom the Bomb, Nick Dimitrakos, Krys Kolanos, Mike Zigomanis, Nick Kypreos (stupid leaf), Bobby Dollas, George Parros, Nick Fotiu Oh, and Ted Leonsis or Peter Karmanos can co-own it too!!
