Power Play

It will be interesting to watch our power play develop this year. So far, it has not looked great. Partly, i think, because Kovy is trying too hard. He needs to find those passes like he was before. He is trying to do too much by himself again. We are missing that quick slap shot from the point. Someone needs to start slapping that puck so there are more options. Otherwise Weber may have to come up and show the boys how to slap shoot.

I don't think our power play will be as good this year as it was last year. In the past our PP was quite good early in games (when the score was close) and much less effective later on when we had a lead. I expect this to continue. The PP is more conservative when we are ahead. I think our 5-5 play will be much better this year and that will take some of the urgency away from the PP (and giving us more powerplays) resulting in less impressive PP stats.

On the flip side I think our PK will be very good this year for similar reasons.

I agree that Kovy needs to calm down during the PP, however, i thikn they need to be careful with the cross-ice passes they often try. most of the time, it's because of those cross-ice passes that the PP sticks the pass gets intercepted.

Another reason why the PP is having problems is that the boys are having a hard time settling down in the offensive zone on the PP. they dump it in, but nobody is there to chase it down and battle the opposing D-men for the puck.

The PP is actually running at a good clip. It is just more sporadic right now.

I believe they will still finish in the top 5.

That'd be impressive, Top 5 in three staright years.

At this point of the season it means very little. They're still adjusting to a few new players (i.e Lang, Tanguay, and Latendresse), a new role for Markov (the key to our success over the last 2 years), and we're still trying to find a setup guy for Markov (I still think we should give Komisarek a try, he's very smart, and can pass the puck). Overall they're far from playing poorly, they just need that little something to make everything click.

Besides, they're only 1 PPG away from being in the 20%, and 2 from a 25% success rate, which is superior to our NHL-leading performance last season. Six games mean very little...

You mean St. Louis isn't going to continue at their 40.7% rate?

You're completely right, the Habs are still finding their groove on the PP.

From what I have seen so far is that the Habs still look like they are racing to the goal line on a lot of chances and always screw it up because they are out of position when the play actually happens. Unfortunately this doesnt just occur on PP.

When they arent racing to the goal line they are standing at the goal line instead. There arent many occasions when you can actually score standing right beside the net at the goal line. You need to be in front of the net to be able to accept a pass from behind the net and be able to score. Those little 2-3' passes from a player behind the goalie to a player parallell to the goalie will hardly ever produce a scoring chance.

Standing at the right side of the net you can only score just off the right side of the post. However if you stand 3-4' in front of the golaie you can actually shoot anywhere on the net. Its infinitely harder for the goalie to stop a shot from a player who is in front of the net. Case in point is look at Koivu's last PP goal. The only reason why he got it was because he was standing 3' closer to centre ice compared to where he usualy stands near the goal line.

This has been happening for several years now too. Its not a race, feel free to slow down sometimes. Also I would love to see the Habs get off a shot on a 3 on 1. In the last several years every 3 on 1 the Habs have resulted in no shot at all and that truly is pathetic. 3 on 1's should be a guarenteed goal but the Habs cant even seem to be able to get off a scoring chance.

Even on most of the Habs 2 on 1's the Habs would make McCabe look like a trophy candidate because the Habs screw it up themselves by driving to fast to the net putting themselves between the puck carrier and the other teams D which is exactly what the other team wants. Slow down and stop cutting off your own passes. The optimal shooting locations are in fact out in front of the net and not at the feet of the goalie.

Markov needs to shoot since he is a guy who we al know can shoot we just never get to see it. When we have a threat from the point it will open up shots in front and to the side of the net.

Thats what it was like with Souray and Streit.
