No Prospect profile today. Instead I bring you a mock draft.

Interesting, wouldn't be a bad year to try and trade up for a 2nd first rounder, seems like it might be a fairly deep draft. I still say whoever drafts Grigorenko is getting a great player.

So the combine has started eh?

Do the Habs release a list of whom they interview or plan to at combine?

I see some top prospects already know how many interviews and which teams want them and some, they say already have requests for 2nd interviews?

Anyone know much about this?

The lists aren't officially released but sometimes it leaks out who was interviewed by what clubs.

We'll likely get more of a sense of who attended/was interviewed from those attending the Habs' own combine.

You stuck with program and dont have any "off the board" picks and seems pretty good? But there are always at least 3 or 4 2nd rounder ranked guys who sneak into 1st round eh; I think Sieloff/Kerdiles/Nieves or maybe Hart being taken by Rangers/Kings.

And Tom Wilson as a 1st rounder? He will likley go 1st round but shouldnt (another Biggs type, who the Oilers used to pick in looking for that power-forward with zero luck) and Canucks would take the big Swedish-American before him i would hope.

Just a couple diff of opinion is all.

I personally wouldn't take him in the first, but I'm betting some team will.

I gave my reasons for why i think it will be Gillis, but I could see the leafs trading up for him, or the Bruins grabbing him, etc...

As you correctly point out with Kerdiles, Nieves, etc.... it only takes one GM/scout to fall in love with a player and suddenly a second rounder is taken in the first round, and this is what I think will happen with Wilson.

There will be at least one team out there who sees him as a potential Lucic, whereas I think he tops out as a bigger Travis Moen.

Back to the Profiles with Mike Winther of the Prince Albert Raiders

http://lastwordonspo...2-mike-winther/

Good breakdown, he is a shifty kid and as you say was on a crappy team, but i think would be a smart pick.

Everyone seems so hung up on size stats, but i think are very overrated for skilled forwards and could list so many Hall of Famers who would of been smaller than 170lbs as a 17 year old, which would easily show "Size aint Everthing", and why i would stay clear of Tom Wilson's/Jamie Oleksiak's/Biggs type in 1st round.

Exactly where Lucic got taken, at 50th, seems bout earliest to take a big bodied forward as one should, unless the offensive skills are there as well.

I'm all about IQ first, skill second, size third. I love smart players.

Winther is smart.

You used to talk about Cammalleri a lot and how he would disappear in the defence on the PP and then all of the sudden he'd be wide open letting off a one timer. Winther reminds me of that.

The other aspects of his game aren't like Cammalleri. And the shot isn't as good as Cammalleri... but he just has that ability that some how he disappears on defenders, and the next thing you know... bang! in the net.

Charles Hudon is another guy in this draft class who does that.

ugg... Rat Boy Cammalleri! Winther back checks and aint a total egomaniac floater scared to take a hit, so not fair comparison, more an insult.

it was one aspect of his game I talked about.... I said, "The other aspects of his game aren't like Cammalleri." so its not a comparison of everything... just one thing he does well.

And as much as people can complain about Cammalleri there were a few things he did very well.

Cammalleri was a specialist. He came to Montreal because we were the power play specialists. The team was banking on Markov to be around and I know Mike was too. We're talking a guy who scored 19 with Calgary before coming to Montreal. The benefit on Calgary was that teams would focus on Iginla and leave Cammalleri open. Those few seconds of available time allowed Cammalleri to score. In Montreal, he was treated like he was supposed to lead the PP and leading the PP puts the attention on him. The attention should have been on the blue line or Plekanec/Gomez.

The way Montreal was built and handled their lines with him there, along with injuries ended up making his run a little underwhelming save from LEADING THE LEAGUE TWICE IN PLAYOFF SCORING FOR US UNTIL WE WERE ELIMINATED. I don't know how many times I have to stress how important this was. The only forward who came close to his production was Gionta. Had Montreal gone to the Cup finals, Cammalleri would have unquestionably became the greatest playoff goal scorer for a single post-season in Canadiens history

It frustrated the hell out of me this season that Martin and Cunnyworth refused to put Erik Cole on his line. The two times they did, they played really well and had a ton of opportunities. But that's now the past. Cammalleri could have been amazing for us but it needed a team effort. He needed an elite player with him, a forward to get him the puck and a player to distract the opposing team. It sounds like a lot but when it worked it was almost always a goal. Cammy was pathetic on the back check and a selfish player but selfish isn't always a bad thing. Selfish can work.

i know, just with he and Heatly, i have nothing good to say about (even if they do have one positive aspect worth mentioning)

I don't know how Cammalleri ever got such a bad rap on here, he spoke out and said that the team was playing like a bunch of losers (which they were), and he was referring to everyone on the team, himself included, as far as I could tell.Yes he floats, and he wasn't having a good season, but for all his faults, he sure can pull the trigger, and he was mostly a positive guy. Just cause Gauthier panicked and traded him, I don't think we all need to turn on the guy.

Question: is it just me or is there really much much more scrutiny, focus and research being done on this site on players being drafted in later rounds this year than ever before? Could the Claude Giroux rising star, and the fact we passed him over [as many others did] be forcing people to look more indepth at the players available after the top ten, or after the first round?? Is it more this year than other years?? Just curious.

More people are playing the role of junior journalists and it's increasing the amount of people who can report on these things. It's really more the Internet has opened the floodgates. We're in the Information Age and it shows. More people now to be unable to see the forest from the trees.

Minuta of each prospect seems relevant for this thread. Cant agree with your proverb and most threads on this website tend to centre on the minuta of Hab stuff, or am i off-base? Some can argue against info overload, but i think is great and is easy enough to ignore threads you havent an interest in.

You are making a big assumption about pick being a forward (chances are you are correct but?), especially with many top ranked players being d-men. As Timmins says, he is looking for "Best Asset" at #3.

I like Dumba, not overly impressed with Murray, but I would be shocked and disappointed if we didn't walk away with a stud offensive forward with our first pick. Its not such a big assumption. Bergevin will look at the big picture, and this franchise has a number of prospects at d who could well be better than any of the d-men in this draft, so common sense dictates that a forward will be taken.
