Game #12: Saturday 02 November, 7 PM: Canadiens at Penguins

Seems like they looked into the abyss and responded with a stronger, more cohesive 3rd period. It wasn’t enough, but maybe that period is one they can build on 🤷‍♂️

They play better as the game went on but where is the fire this team had last season?

Yeah, it’s pretty sad when we’re looking back nostalgically to the 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens. Yet here we are.

I assume that lack of confidence is the biggest issue with guys like Barron and WiFi, and perhaps Dach and Newhook. I wonder, though, whether something hasn’t soured the internal chemistry a bit. They look to my totally amateur eye like a team that has some sort of issue beyond just sucking. Just a month ago we were talking about the great team spirit, how excited guys were to be part of this, etc. Now they look…like they don’t quite believe in each other or trust each other not to suck.

Waiting for the stat card but Data Puck posted this GF% for the various line combos.

Absolute crap except what we already knew what worked: Caufield, Suzuki, Dach.

Funny to contrast line 3 with line 1 on that list, LOL. God love Josh Anderson but…

Isn’t the Kapanen line also doing OK by this metric? (Sorry, my stats knowledge is as bad as my high school math grades would suggest). I thought Kapanen looked pretty good tonight.

If you look at the individual players' data, it looks quite different. This one is from moneypuck but naturalstattrick data is quite similar. 79% is super high for the top line, though, is that 5-on-5, though, or all situations (including power play)?

Yeah you are correct that the Kapanen, Dvorak, Heineman were decent and the new stat page Im about to post show they had a good night.

Interesting that Dvorak had such a statistically good night.

I admit I don't understand these stats as well as some on this board but isn't that because he scored the only goal.

The dark green bar accounts for his goal (individual offence). The light coloured green is team offence and he did well there too.

What these stats tell me is that the Habs poured their heart and soul into team defence last night. At the expense of team offence.

Greatest defensive team effort of the season so far

Thanks for the clarification.

Habs' plane struck by fueling truck in Pittsburgh

Enough damage that the plane could not fly ... so they spent the night in Pittsburgh ... getting back to Montreal this afternoon

Talk about things not going their way.

Fully agreed. St-Louis had focused them on preventing defensive mistakes, and they largely did that, but then were so cautious that they had little offence on the night. Some more maturity in decision-making should help them find the balance. Definitely still a work in progress.

Beyond that, I should note that while the various advanced stats sites and Twitter posters all use the same underlying data from the NHL, they all analyze and interpret it somewhat differently (you can easily see this when you compare the xGF/xGA/GSAx numbers from various sites). So, no one site is likely to be an absolute source of truth, but in combination with the eye test these analytics are certainly useful.

No.  His stat card was very good before the goal.

And the goal is only counted for its xG not as a 1.0 goal.  The charts are based on xG so that good or bad goaltending is a neutral factor.

So what you are saying is that Dvorak had a good game?  I guess anything is possible.

He had an excellent game.

It was just one game though and doesnt make up for his bad ones.

lol, I find myself getting mad at games too.

The hybrid defensive system seems to be a tough one for these guys to pick up on . I have a tough time understanding it just watching.

I love Marty, he’s a very intelligent individual, but sometimes I wonder if he should be an assistant coach….
