The hybrid defensive system seems to be a tough one for these guys to pick up on . I have a tough time understanding it just watching.

The question, in my mind, is not whether the hybrid system (apparently implemented this season?) is causing them to lose games now ... it is whether, once fully implemented coming out of the rebuild, it will help the Canadiens win more games.

Bingo.

It takes time to learn, there is no doubt about that. But its an effective system when played correctly.

Growing pains are part of it, though I think the talk of being in the mix may have not factored that in.

Savard is having a very hard time with the hybrid system or he has simply lost a step.

There seems to be confusion by the forwards on who to cover or maybe when they need to cover a Dman’s position when they engage an opponent.

Surely things will improve as the season progresses.

Im trying to not be the Habs fan I used to be, but damn it’s hard to watch the process take place.

I think the Habs will have a successful rebuild and they they will be competitive for years to come. I am not yet sold on their ability to build a Stanley cup winner, but that is a conversation for an few seasons from now.

Some nights, it is brutal, but the progress is evident

Nothing new, 2nd youngest team in NHL, no surprise is it?

And welcome Hutson fan.

The backwards steps that we seem to be taking are not fun that’s for sure.

I'm still confident that this team will be much better soon…ish

One thing that I know Hughes has talked about before is that development is not linear; it's not always solely an upward trajectory.  It could be one of those 'one step back, two steps forward' types of years where they struggle early adapting to the defensive zone before finding some comfort and looking better in the second half.
