CoRvInA
someone please refresh my memory.... I'm still thinking 11 vs 11 for some reason... A team can dress a max of 21 players at one time for a game? or was it 20... in any case how many can you have on your active roster? or is it only determined by the cap? that can't be right... anyways, I'm trying to convince myself that with 13 forwards, like BG says there will be room for a Rook to fight for a spot in the lineup and/or sit beside Downey and Streit up in the tribunes. Tony
20 players can get dressed in one game. The team can't have more than a 23 man roster.

KoZed
Hey Kozed, great Photoshop work on Sammy & Johnson (even gave them numbers!)........You are now, undoubtedly, Mr. Adobe!! Gotcha. I didt in Fireworks... though now that Adobe bought Macromedia I guess you're still right. Anyway, the paint job reminds me of the old O-Pee-Chee cards where traded players would get the same treatment. So what was the point of your comment telling me my lines were less realistic than yours? You said "I like my like my lines better because blah blah blah..." so I just replied with the same type of arguement. Anyone can make lines with anyone in any spot. What's the point of that? Psycing
Gah, Ribs just doesn't fit in. Have to agree... Sammy - Koivu - Kovy Higgz - Ribs - Ryder Perez - Plekz - Johnson Begin - Bonk - Murray/Downey Markov - Komi Rivet - Souray Bouillon - Dandenault Huet Aebischer
KoZed
Actually, I dont really see Saku fit with Sammy. They're both too alike in size and style. Since Samsonov and Kovalev like to control the puck like Koivu, I think Ribs would fit better between them. Last year the problem was that with the phantom LW on their line, it was getting too predictable that Ribs would give the puck to Kovalev. At least now with Samsonov on the other side there would be 2 options. Harder to counter offensively but very weak defensively. Then Higgs-Saks-Ryder is just as hard to work against. Ryder just like to shoot and Higgs can do a little of everything; that lets Saku control the puck as much as he wants, with the options to pass to Higgins or Ryder since both can finish. Higgins brings the defensive acumen but otherwise its still not a great defensive line. Plekanec with Johnson will do a fine job at both ends. I think Gainey said Chipchura had a shot at a spot because Bonk would fit better on that line LW than all the kids we've got. If that 3rd line is to be a 2-way line, they need more weight and defensive awareness on the left flank. Although by default Bonk would be the LW, he could still swap with Plekanec depending in which zone the play is happening. That'd leave Begin with two kids on the 4th line. That's where Chipper could slide in the center slot. He's not a defensive liability and can hit. If not, there's always the option of having 2 grinders (Begin-Murray) and an offensive speedster (Perezhogin/Kostitsyn/Grabovsky) just to keep the other team on their toes. The Chicoutimi Cucumber
What about Higgins as 2nd line C? That would open a slot on the wing for Perezhogin, whose development might otherwise be hurt by Samsonov.
Psycing
What about Higgins as 2nd line C? I have to agree that Higgins is likely a career LW now, and that he plays much better along the boards anyhow. I doubt we'll see him playing Center unless someone gets thrown out of the face-off circle.
CoRvInA
Quick Question... will we see any wing movement... meaning is there any chance Johnson goes to centre and Perez goes back to his Rightwing... or has be become a permanent Leftwinger ... now that we are short of leftwingers
jordy11
I'd go with this : Higgins-Koivu-Ryder Samsonov-Ribeiro-Kovalev Perezhogin-Plekanec-Johnson Murray-Bonk-Bégin Reserves: Downey/Ferland 1st line : I really love this line because all 3 guys have different styles of play... Higgins plays like a power-forward, he isn't shy of going in the corners to get the puck and he goes to the net to score garbage goals... Koivu is one of the best playmakers in the league, he also isn't shy of going in the corners and to pay the price in front of the net... Ryder is a pure goal scorer, and because he plays with Sak and Higgs, he doesn't have to create plays, go in the corners, backcheck... he just has to position himself correctly to receive a pass from Koivu or Higgins and score! 2nd line: My god will this line be awesome... Kovalev is a fast and complete player who can do anything on the ice, Ribeiro can create amazing plays and he had a good chemistry with Kovy last year... Sammy is an ultra-speedy forward who can score, create plays and he'll fit amazingly with those 2 players... 3rd line: One of the best 3rd lines in the league (if not the best) with Pleky who's a good 2-way centerman with lots of speed and creativity, Perezhogin has the potential to score 20 next year, I think he's the next Afinogenov...Johnson has a good intensity level and is also a good 2-way guy who can score 20. Remember Dackell-Juneau-Sundstrom? 4th line: Also one of the best 4th line ine the league. First of all, all those players are penalty-killers, so this line is very reliable defensively... Bégin, Murray and Downey are very intense guys who play an amazing physical game and can bring momentum on our side with one shift... Bonk is reliable defensively, wins face-offs, and is the perfect foil for such intense guys... Plus, all those guys can score around 10 goals in a complete year... I'd put Ferland as the 14th forward because he's more a 4th line forward than Kostitsyn, Chipchura, Latendresse or Lapierre. Kostitsyn wouldn't fit in a 4th line, Chipchura needs a full season in Hamilton, Latendresse will go back to juniors and Lapierre should be in Hamilton to continue his devellopment. The only way that one of these forward could be in the team is by stealing Perezhogin's spot... So these are my lines, and I think we have what it takes to make a great run for next season... ch_nl
Just read this on the Canadiens homepage: “We were looking to fill in the open spot alongside Mike Ribeiro and Kovalev,” said Carbonneau. “A natural goal scorer with a really good shot, Sergei knows how to get free and Ribeiro and Kovalev like to find the open man. They should be a good combination.” Does this prove that Higgins, Koivu and Ryder will be the first line?

Not at all...it pretty much seals the deal that the line will be kept together, but they could find themselves being the second line if Samsonov and Kovalev are tearing it up. kaos
Carbonneau said himself that they'll look to pair Samsonov and Kovalev with Ribeiro. Koivu, Higgins, Ryder looked good last year so theres no sense in breaking them up. The only real question will be what is done with the other 6 forward positions with Perezhogin, Kositsyn, Begin, Bonk, Johnson, Murray, Downey and Plekanec. Looks like a forward will have to be moved. Kostitsyn needs to play this year. I'd say Downey will probably be waived to Hamilton.
ch_nl
As the roster has to be 23 names when the season starts, whom can start the season in Hamilton without having to clear waivers?

I agree with you, Carbonneau said that Ribs will be Sammy and Kovy's center. As for Downwy, we are aloud a 23 man roster, no need to move any forwrads: 2 goalies, 7 Ds and 14 forwards. Downey can stay, he's #23. He will just not get dressed too often as they can only dress 21 per game.
habschris
They resigned Downey for a reason, the reason is not sending him down or sitting him in the pressbox. he will atleast play half the games, especially against bigger tougher teams. He will split time on the 4th line RW. Who will he share it with who knows. Gainey will move a forward even if it just for a pick. I sure hope Ribiero can keep up with Kovalev and Samsonov, his lack of foot speed worries me on that line.

I have to agree that Higgins is likely a career LW now, and that he plays much better along the boards anyhow. He had a good Olympics with Team Canada and when he won a spot with the Habs, he was a C. I remember most people compared him to Mike Ridley: a sort of good 2-way center. Then Savage got moved to LW and became a stricly offensive forward. Of course Higgins is a much better overall player than Savage, but he followed the same path. Was touted as a 2-way center but became a much better offensive player when moved to the LW. He might stay there for a while but might come back to C later, just like Damphousse went from LW to C once he had a more rounded game and could shut-down players as well as keep his offense up. CoRvInA
Ok related to getting another 2ndline Centre.... as in BRIERE! unless Kovy Sammy and Ribs score more than what they create turnovers then that line Carb mentioned would work... Objectively they dont have the 2 way factor Bulis gave .... so Ribs cannot centre that line of Nondefensive wingers So if Johnson does not have what it takes to replace Ribs... then Koivu will have to play with the Russian wingers... and we will need to place Ribs with Ryder and Higgins! Which was KOZED's first interpretation that I now think will be plan B if PLan A doesnt work

No need for a defensive specialist on a top #1 line, that's a false concept many people have. And in my opinionn, base on last year's performance, including the playoffs, Brière is a fine #1 center, not a #2. Koivu would be #2 to Brière. who scored 25 goals in 48 games last year. Koivu never scored 25 goals in one season. A line of Sammy-Briere-Kovy would be devastating and unmatched in a Canadiens roster since a very very long time. Just imagine the potential. Ribs and Ryder can go if we get Briere. It gives us a threw #1 line, and it gives room for a young winger to play with Higgins and Koivu. Between Perez, Kost and Lats, one is bound to do the job. I would definetly try to acquire Briere, if available, on for the right price. Edited July 24, 2006 by Komisarek the Cruncher

Dalhabs
I dont think Buffalo wants Ryder and Ribeiro (4.1M$) when they can keep Briere for 5M$. I wouldnt trade Briere for Ryder and Ribs. Id rather do it for Ryder and a draft pick or something like that. There is no way this trade happens. Buffalo has a very good team, that is built for the new NHL. I highly doubt they will give up Briere, unless the right offer is made. Montreal does not have the assets to get this deal done. In return, Buffalo would be seeking players that would fit their style of team (speed and defenceman), while making an immediate impact. Ryder is not very fast, and he is not a centre. On top of that, who else can Montreal give up? Komisarek (who would replace him in Montreal)? The young forwards (Perezhogin, Kostsisyn, Plekanec), are unproven scorers, and it would be too risky for Buffalo to hope one of these guys could produce. As much as I would love to see Briere as the #1 centre with Koivu as #2, I know it ain't gonna happen.
