I don't mind that just as long as Souray is willing to be patient. Sheldon, please give us a chance to replace you effectively.

I'm sure he will. He loves the Habs' treatment of him over the years. This is a personal issue. It's not out of spite.

Somebody tap Ryder on the shoulder and remind him of what he could POTENTIALLY be a part of! :?-

I wouldn't be too upset with Souray leaving, as long as replace him with an as capable defensive defenceman, which shouldn't be too hard. The problem will be replacing his shot and offensive ability that he posesses when he is healthy. This is one situation where we don't really have any young kids that can come up and fill the spot, so this just may be an ideal situation to try and trade Souray/Aebiescher/Ribeiro and try and get a number 2 defenceman in return. Does anyone know who needs a goalie now? There can't be many teams that need one before the start of the season, I know come November or December teams will be looking........possibly us, but noone right now I don't think. Most teams have sured up their goltending situation for the beginning of the year anyway.

Good, solid defenceman traditionally take the longest to mature and are the hardest find on the market, as they are at a premium to start with. So while losing Souray may not be the end of the world(after all we aren't talking about someone who would be ranked along with the likes of 70's greats Lapointe, Savard or Robinson) the fact is it won't be easy to replace him. And if one is available on the market, then you can rest assured that nearly every team in need of one will be lined up to grab him, and the cost will definitely be more than Souray straight up for what you might get in return......

Bottom line = Souray is not easily replaced with a similar caliber defenceman

I can see this happening ... only because he's going to be UFA next summer ... and I believe he's already said he'd like to play in California to be closer to his kid ( he may not want to sign a long term deal ) ... BG might be forced to move him early to make sure he can get someone of equal caliber and have him gel though out the season. hopefully not ... I think he's going to have alot better season this year ... his family trouble is not as tough as it was last season ( or so I hope )

I wouldn't be surprised to see Souray and Aebi go as a package to acquire the elusive #2 or #1A centreman we've so far failed to get.

That would, however, leave a gaping hole on D. But it's hard to see why teams would agree simply to flip comparable defencemen...which is why I think the scenario above is more likely.

Souray is an excellent d-man despite his occasional brain-cramps and his departure would be a problem.

This rumor won't stop dying.

How many times does Souray have to say "I want to play in Montreal but I wouldn't mind being traded if it gets me closer to my daughter." ?

he does have a daughter he and his wife and child have split with plenty of distance between the two

why wouldnt he want to be closer to his daughter.

he is going to be UFA after this year if he isnt traded then i would think he would sign with another team

probably in California!! Makes perfect sense to me!

I know this isn't a good source but...

My dad told me he heard on the radio today that Souray has officially requested a trade. 99% chance he heard it on CJAD 800 (as that's what he mainly listens to). The thing is that I don't know why they would report as official and not as a rumor if it wasn't 100% guaranteed. They lose their credibility.

What I'm hoping is that my dad just heard wrong and that they reporting the rumor.

ive been a red sox fan long enough to not pay too much attention to trade requests. If you had manny ramirez on your team, you'd feel the same way.

The only 'source' i've heard for this rumour is morenzi on team 990... I mean I guess thats a plausible source, but I wouldnt bet the farm on it.

If Souray want's to leave then it's better for all to let him lose.

Just make sure that they get equal or better talent in return.

If he wan't to go to Californa then the Kings are the only possibility as the Ducks are loaded at defence.

Mattias Norström, Rob Blake, Aaron Miller or Ljubo Visnovsky.

If the Habs add Aebisher they could even get Garon back.

I'm not sure we need Garon back, Danis could be ready for the back-up job.

Hockeyleaks is reporting that Montreal is in talks with LA regarding Aebischer and Souray, not much more info on that.

I wonder if BG could sweeten the pot with a draft pick and get Visnovsky out of LA...he's a guy that can make the perfect first pass out of the defensive zone AND is a PP specialist. 17G and 50A last season.

I think we could replace Souray easily "defensively", last year he was soft on D, and by soft I mean pathetic at times, whether that was because of his personal life I don't know, nor do I care, if he wants out of Montreal to be closer to his family he will be eqaully if not worse on D this year, so get rid of him and pick up a quality Dfenceman.

There is absolutely no way LA are giving up Visnovsky. The odds of that happening are about as equal to us giving up Markov.

Since it is all but official that Souray wants out on Montreal. Wouldn't a logical choice be Detroit? They are at a crossroads with Belfour and no other real trade prospects.

I know Souray wants to go to California, but ....too bad. This way he is closer to his kids, albeit not by much, but again too bad. You can't choose where you go.

The only thing I am wondering about is, who do they have that is expendable that would help us?

Does anyone know?

Glad your not my boss with that kind of attitude & approach to an employees personal problems......

Souray may have struggled early in the season, probably partly to do so with those problems, but he also struggled with the changes in the rules. In fact a lot of good players had problems with them!

But as the season wore on he was definitely soft and he was not pathetic. Some of those so called miscues were the result of some damn good talent being just a bit better at that moment. You win some and you lose some of those one on ones! And a couple of them were the result of a defensive partner making the frst mistake on that play Anyone care to remember the fact that a costly gaffe by Rivet actually made Souray the scapegoat for a lot of people?

So while not perfect, he wasn't soft, has a great shot and is a capable top 3 defenceman on most NHL clubs.

Sorry to say, but that type of defenceman doesn't grow on trees at the NHL level..... they never have and never will. And if you already have one then it's not very likely you'll be willing to part with it, especially when you know the guy on the other end of the phone has a gun to his head!

As far as his request to go west to be closer to his family goes - if that is true then one thing is for sure in that equation - the Habs have always been known for treating their players with absolute class. If they can get some comparable value then they will accomodate his request

I would never consider Souray a top 3 defenceman on most teams, and I have no problem accomodating his request to go West if it suits the Canadiens needs, if not tough luck for Souray. They should ship him where they can get the best deal, regardless of whether it is LA, or NY or Buffalo. I think it would be nice to send him to where he wants to be but I don't see it as essential. This is a business and if he doesn't want to honor his contract and requests a trade, that makes his value go down, because other teams know he wants out, that also gives West Coast teams ammo, to depreciate his value thinking BG is handcuffed.

My big issue is that this whole thing has gone public and it hurts our chances of getting someone of equal value in return, as always is the case when other teams know that a player wants out.

As for you not wanting me to be your boss, you're probably right, if you thing you could sign a contract with me and end it because of personal issues, I didn't hear Gainey asking for money back last year when Souray was Fu$*ing the dog on D. The bottom line is I never want to have a player in Montreal who doesn't want to be in Montreal.

I don't know, I think Edmonton got a pretty good deal. :P

He never screwed any puppies last year, and he hasn't vowed to severe any contract!

He is rumoured to have asked for a trade for personal reasons.

No major sports sources in Ontario, or that I know of have yet to report this - and they would if they put any stock in it - so this is still just that. A rumour that keeps floating about?

Quite simply put he has possibly asked Habs management if he could be moved elsewhere for good personal reasons. If he really has, then I would trust Gainey's compassion and especially his hockey smarts to make the right deal as it would be in everyone's best interest, all personal sentiments aside. And if you had a chance to move closer to your young child after a seperation/divorce, would you not see if it could be accommodated by your particular firm, or occupation?

Why does that kind of parenting instinct make him a schmuck - oy vey, a nahr bleibt a nahr!

And yes talent-wise he is a capable top 3/4 defenceman on most teams in todays NHL..... few if any NHL level people would argue that point!

As far as Pronger goes - uuummmhhhh, lets see now...... given the fact he is one of the very best in the NHL certainly made that deal much easier as everyone knew what a dog fight it was going to be to sign the few top flight defenceman available through free agency. I wonder how much better they might have done if that hadn't gone public, and only time will tell how well they actually did.

Problem is once it goes public it basically puts a gun to the head of any manger's head as the shrewd GM's are looking to force your hand. And it is not necessarily the players fault in every situation as it is often the media that is to blame - and the French press seem to love it when they can crucify some poor non Francophone for any possible reason.......

When I see a deal done or I hear him say it publically, then I will actually believe he requested this move?

'Til then it's just rampant specualation as far as can see?
