  1. He did? He brought in Chiarot, Edmundson, and Savard on NHL deals and signed Xhekaj to his ELC. If anything, I think he was a little too enamoured with the big, physical defencemen you're describing; he certainly didn't move away from them.

  2. I don’t see how you “protect” a player from what are basically clean hits. Especially in the playoffs, when an instigator penalty is very damaging. I agree with Alfredoh that Hutson, like Hughes, will have to protect himself. And Habs29 makes the point that Hughes has never been targeted like this. Next time around, he’ll probably be more ready for it. Remember in 2014 when the Bruins’s game plan involved hitting the crap out of Subban? I think it was Game 5…the announcer declared early in the game, after watching PK dodge a few attempts, that PK was simply too quick for them to hit. That was the moment when I really began to believe that the Habs would win that series (which we did). It’s not ALL on the D-man, though. One of the talking points in Van is that you ease the pressure on Hughes by having a more effective forecheck, which prevents Nashville from winding up and driving into the zone with the crushing speed that leads their captain to get splattered. The Canucks implemented this to better effect last game. So, a combo of smart, prepared player learning to adapt, and smart team play, can help a Hutson to survive. I still think an under-played theme in all this is that Hronek, who wants a huge payday this summer, has not stepped up to take some of the burden off Hughes. If other teams target Hutson and, say, Mailloux is able to raise his game short-term, that would also help mitigate the danger.

  4. The early signing sets it up that the Habs could issue him a qualifying offer to retain his rights, just in case something clicks over there and he becomes a bigger threat. Doesn't mean they will but it makes it easier to do so.

  7. Hahahahaha, I think they will do the classic thing and just fire Keefe. As the old saw has it, you can’t fire the team. They will keep tinkering around the edges with Reeves-type acquisitions being hailed as master strokes, and hoping that some way, somehow, this group finally goes on a run. That GWG was bizarre, but Pasternak showed incredible hands on that play. I also wonder whether it was a case of subtle home-ice advantage - maybe the Bruins know that the puck bounces that way when sent to that exact spot in that building. It’s possible. Certainly Pasternak seemed to anticipate it. Meanwhile, a beat-up Boston now faces bone-crunching Florida, and probable defeat. This is the best possible outcome as far as I’m concerned 🥳

  10. Vincenz Rohrer will play for Austria at the Worlds. David Reinbacher, somewhat surprisingly, won't due to injury.

  11. I honestly hope beck works out for your sake. Or every time a person gets excited about a not "guaranteed" prospect people will mention you and beck lol (My friends still mention tinordi to me....)

  12. Yes, there can be exceptions to size but they're usually incredibly good or elite players. ex: Patrick Kane is small too, Marchessault is small and isnt elite but he works out because he's on a big team. Are you sure Crosby was 190 when drafted? It says he's 200 lbs now so he is avg size but see he's only gained 10 lbs which is a super low amount. Imagine if Catton maxed out at 173lbs - realize that he's not at the level of being Kane, Crosby, or Celebrini, good. Although I prefer larger players I don't have any issues with small players but they have to be great and/or strong for their size. Being small and weak simply doesn't work.

  13. I just think there is too much emphasis on size. Crosby was 5'11" 190 lbs when drafted, Gretzky maxed out at 185 lbs (I doubt he weighed that much), good think they aren't being drafted today or they might slip to the 2nd round.

  14. Right now the Winnipeg pick is 27th. To move up we need the following to happen: 1) Edmonton to beat Vancouver (I think a good possibility) 2) Colorado to beat Dallas (I think that's about 50/50, two pretty equal teams). If Colorado plays Vegas then it doesn't matter who wins 3) The winner of Boston-Toronto to beat Florida (very unlikely in my opinion). Worst case scenario is 27, best case is 24, most likely 25 or 26.

  15. I guess I could have been clearer as there have been a few Big Bad Bruin teams. I will go back to the Wayne Cashman, Ken Hodge and Johnny Mckenzie teams. Orr and Espo also played on those teams.

  17. We have Xhekaj, Struble and Slafkovsky, all able to take on a villain. And I don't think the Sheriff needs to be on the ice in order to make his presence felt.

  19. Agreed, Nashville is a tough grinding team, similar to Florida that way only Florida is way more dangerous because they have more talent, especially up front. Vancouver is very fortunate to be up 3-2 in this series. I hope the Canucks prevail but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Nashville comes back to win.

  20. I think its very lazy and unfair to just attribute (part of )PK's problems to racism. We have no evidence at all that his teammates or coaches mistreated him due to his race. The Habs exec I heard from indicated that his teammates felt he put himself ahead of the team. Whether he did or not, it is a problem in team sports if your teammates don't have your back.

  21. In fairness, all @TurdBurglar said was "PK's problem was his attitude and interactions with teammates" ... not that he had an "attitude problem" ... his attitude and interactions with teammates reflected his flamboyant, outgoing personality ... the management of the era apparently decided it was a problem ... I'm neither defending nor supporting PK, nor denying that race may have played some part in how teammates and other players around the league reacted to him.

  23. Pk's reputation was bullshit. Evander Kane has earned his though with a number of run-ins with the law and off ice issues.

  24. I like the "hometown hockey" segments. Growing up in a small town I can tell you that without sports (hockey and curling in the winter) and ball in the summer, small towns would be "deadsville". I can understand why someone growing up in a larger center where there is more to do might not see that.

  25. I watched hockey for around 12 straight hours yesterday. Never in my life have I sat on my couch for an entire day watching hockey. What an unproductive yet glorious day. There was a lot of really great hockey played on Sunday.
