CoRvInA
with the cap going to over 56 mil who's gonna make an updated cap hit with Tanguay and company?// or is there a webpage we can see for that? btw Demitra ... he's going down hill ... I work with trends all day long... and his trend is clear as an Ozone free blue sky! so I'm okay with Pavol but no more than what Koivu or Kovy is making now! Jason Williams: hmmm better than Smolinski yes.. but were getting another second/third line centre or better a second or first line RWinger if he's got what it takes probably double Smolo's price... No more than 4.5 mil please Bob unless he is an AS on faceoffs! Jagr: hmm no unless he calls Gainey Himself and plays for 4 mil Max (will never happen) Shanahan: After what he did to Bobby 2 years ago ... no more than 4 Mil and yes the best possible answer to meet the Big brother to the Latendress bro's and Higgins and all the North American forwards we've got Morrison: Myself iving in Vancouver... somehow I don't have a good feeling about whats between those two ears of his... No potential of improvement other than reaching his best year (two three years ago?) Second line centre at no more than 3 mil please... only if we have to get someone! Which raises the question... if none of the desired players arrive in the first 24 hours of July first I would be happy if we sign Streit at aprox 3 mil and Smolinski at 1.5-2 mil which leaves room for trading the excess once tanguay settles in...... CAUSE REMEMBER SAmsonov people!!!! Gracias Edited June 27, 2008 by CoRvInA

Easy Ryder
The cap raise bringed more speculation, intesresting points on players available on FA. This bring us back to Streit. The habs need a pivot with a good shot for the first PP wave to go with Markov. A quick inventory of defense and we see that no D can do the job effectively except Hammer, who we need for second wave PP. The other options are S. Kost and ??(blink) Does his PP talent compensate his poor performance in playoffs and his defensive flaws ? I for myself think that Sergei can do the job and it's time to move on. Chris
They don't need Streit. He vanished like others in the playoffs. SK cantake his spot on the pp. Most of Streit's points were assists and that's what SK does best. IF they get Sundin Bg won't resign any ufa's, he'll want a little money down the stretch to tweek the lineup. Maybe Brisby as a #7 can help the PP at times. No reason to pay 3 mill for a PP specialist.

He ususally put the shot ON net! BUt once again, i don'T believe Streit is worth anywhere near 3 million$ per year. Maybe 2 million$ MAX! The Chicoutimi Cucumber
Streit is a nice player, but overrated. He benefited hugely from playing on the league's highest-scoring team and his physical and defensive games are nonexistent. He should be resigned for maybe $2 mil, but some other organization will likely pay him over $3 because of his gaudy numbers, and we shouldn't get involved in any kind of bidding war for him. If he's smart, he'll take less money to stay in his present, perfect situation. Since most hockey players aren't that smart, I expect him to take the money and run. And we will no doubt put someone else in his slot with minimal damage; because if we could replace Sheldon Souray, a genuinely elite PP specialist, we bloody well can replace the Swiss Miss. Chris
Where does he fit on the roster is the other question. With additions of Tanguay, Chipchura and Dandy as extrta's where does he play. Plus the Sundin possibilty. As CC points out, he's not good enough to play top 6 D, not good enough to be a regular forward. Who sits? I just suggested that at some point, Streit looks better than the other options available. And I'm not sure if even at that point, we should re-sign him, because the asking price might be too much. And to CoRvInA.... the number I have is up to date, based on a full roster of contracted players (minus a backup goalie, as we're in need of one and Loic Lacasse is not a reasonable solution). Easy Ryder
Somebody else will offer him this kind of money and 3+ years. How tough is it to find a point men that can hit the net ? Sadly it is rare, we have to develop one. Without putting a hole in the line up 5-5. Defensively 5-5 Streit is too passive and small. Offensively 5-5 he doesn't bring more than any of our top nine players. 4th line i would prefer some young aggressive blood. I used to like O'byrne but his limits now lead me to consider him as a 7th defensemen. Leading for a bigger role in 2 years. Definely habs need another offensive D men short term to replace Streit and Brisebois.

We make do with our current group (maybe bring back Breezer to rotate with O'Byrne/injury fill-in) and look for what's available in February for us to fill in (hopefully) the last hole in the lineup and put us on a level to compete with the big boys in the West while having the lineup that can walk over the East. The Chicoutimi Cucumber
I may be speaking out of ignorance here, but isn't John Michael Liles a UFA? Assuming we lose Sundin, I would be inclined to make him one of the few UFAs of interest after Rolston. Clearly he is a bona fide to-4 offensive defenceman, no? And probably cheaper than Campbell by some distance. How's his point shot? Edited June 27, 2008 by The Chicoutimi Cucumber

Liles will, at very least, sign for $3.5m a year for 4 years or more. He's going to get Priessing money minimum. With Komisarek coming up on UFA, and with all the D prospects we have... it just doesn't seem to make a ton of fiscal sense. Especially since signing him likely would require a NTC or a NMC, given recent trends.

BTH
Liles isn't much different from Streit and he'll cost just as much. I'd say, if it comes down to picking between the two, you take the one that is coming off a 62 point season with YOUR team and you know fits in. Of all the suggested options, I'm starting to like Demitra the most. The age is not an issue, he is a few years younger than Sundin and both of them are point-a-game forwards. Demitra's numbers declined a bit because he was on a very defensive team in Minny and was hit by a couple of injuries (as was Gaborik so they didn't get to play as much together). On our team, Demitra could return to his PPG form. He had 5 points less than Rolston this season in 13 less games. In addition, Rolston was a -1 while Demitra was a +9. I think he can play both right-wing and C which is just what we need, I think. I think he fits into our team better than anyone else out there simply because he is the most explosive option remaining. Not better, but more explosive on the attack than Sundin, I would say. I think he could get something like 5.5 x 3-4 years on the open market. I would want him for something in between 4-5.5M and would insist on the contract being no more than two years (he turns 34 in November). At 5 x 2, I would love to have Demitra. Ecurb
We all know what we need is another C, preferably a big one, but we need someone to complete our top 3 lines. Sundin is still the best option out there, no other UFA comes close to what we need. Alot of you are suggesting we spend our money on either a UFA winger that we move to C or upgrading the D. I even thought about signing Jagr and moving Higgins to C. All those ideas are interesting but we're just hoping they solve whats percieved as a weakness at C. I'm now leaning towards waitng to see what Sundin decides. He's exactly what we need and for all our frustration in waiting for his decision, we should wait till he decides. When Sundin decides, if its not in our favour, then plan B should be the trade route. I would hope Gainey has contacted a few GM's that have some depth at C should we have to go to plan B. These are a few C's I think we should consider as plan B. Stoll, the Oilers have depth at C, not sure what they'd want back but he's a good fit as a 3rd line C. He's got size, he's great on FO's, plays an agressive game and he's righthanded. This is a player that had 68 points 3 seasons ago and was on his way to another 60+ point season 2 years ago before he got a concussion. He can play the point on the PP. He was also a Bulldog several years ago when some of our current players were down there. He might have even played with Higgins and might form 2/3rd's of a great shutdown line with him. Hanzal, the Yotes have alot of depth at C. Adding Jokinen means they have Jokinen,Muller,Turris and Hanzal as their top 4 C's. They'll probably move one of those C's to wing because of that depth. I'm not sure what they would want in a trade but Hanzal might end up being a 1st or 2nd line C and might be worth the gamble. He's 6'5 and 210lbs and only 21 years old, got lots of upside. Nylander, again a team with lots of depth at C, provided they re-sign Fedorov. Check out Nylanders career stats and check out his playoff stats. He's a solid offensive player with decent size. The thing with the Caps is that Fedorov really fit in well for them and I expect them to re-sign him. The Caps got a couple of problems right now. They want to re-sign Huet, but that will cost. But, a bigger problem will be Green who is looking for an offer-sheet come July 1st. I don't doubt the Caps will match that offer-sheet, but thats going to also cost alot. The bottom line is the Caps will probably be looking to free cap space and Nylander might be available relatively cheaply. The drawback with Nylander is that he is signed for 3 more years at 4.875M per. Yet, if we were able to send Dandenault there way, we save cap space for another addition this year should we have a need. He could always be bought out on the last year of his contract, but for 2 year he's as good as most of the UFA's available this year. Sundin was never going to sign minutes after the deal. He is slow and methodical about everything he does. If he does not sign, oh well. At least I know Gainey pitched him on the city and didn't get the July 1st runaround. If he does not sign it has NOTHING to do with Bo Gainey and everything to do with Sundin either going for the money, or not wanting to play with the Habs. If the Habs sign nobody they can sit and wait and be patient. They should not take the approach that they must win this season because it is the 100th anniversary. Keep building, remain cap flexible and their time will come.
