I was also wondering the same thing!

FAWK!!!

Weber will be called up and we'll see how he handles the powerplay. Hammer coming back will help too and if it doesn't I can see Bob making a trade before things get TOO out of hand.

The only player who can all by himself keep us in the race for the playoffs until Markov is back is Carey Price. Theodore achieved a similar feat in 2001-02 when Saku was lost for almost the entire season. If Carey doesn't have an excellent season, we're done.

TSN (MacKenzie) just said that one option Montreal is considering is asking Breezy to come out of retirement. I didn't mind Breezy last year, but if he has not been training and working towards playing, there is no way he is ready to step in.

I think we need to bring up a defenseman who can provide offense (the one element of Markov's game that most of our current D don't have) even if they are weak defensively. In addition, I would really like to see Bob pull off a miracle for a top 6 winger or centre who can shore up the offense. That is probably easier then trying to find it at the back end.

Either way, this season just got a whole lot tougher.

I found this on TSN.ca, In the article that talks about Markov's injury!

Montreal is 7-20 with Markov out of the lineup.

OUCH!!! This is gonna hurt. Everybody is gonna have to chip in and put in the extra effort...or else we are truly fv.cked!

I suppose we can always convince Brisebois to come out of retirement.

I was only joking. :(

My only hopes now for this season is to see the Habs somewhere in the 9th or 10th seed when Markov comes back. Something like 5-6 pts behind the last playoffs spot and we'd be fighting like demons in the last 2 months.

I'm still hoping for a miracle chance for PK Suban!!

Hearing the words from the Montreal players, surprisingly enough what Plekanec said on the TSN article, it's given me some hope, the players don't sound like they're panicing, so the least we can do is try not to jump off any bridge heh.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=293425

"We're going to miss him, there's no question about that," said centre Tomas Plekanec. "But we talked about it a little bit and if you look at last year, Pittsburgh lost (Sergei) Gonchar and (Ryan) Whitney. It happens to other teams too, so we've got to fight through it and it's important for other guys to step up their game and play their marquee role."

Why Brisebois and not Dandenault? I just don't get that.

Frankly M.A. Bergeron might be better than either - a cheap PP specialist. I might do that if the 'replace-Markov-by-committee' approach is a bust.

Watching TSN after the DET/STL game, McKenzie noted that Brisebois, Bergeron, as well as former Blue Jacket Christian Backman had been contacted by the Habs. I'd suspect they're merely kicking the tires at this point.

Anything is possible. For all we know, the players will come together and battle like crazy in Markov's absence and be well-positioned...only to suffer a letdown when he returns. It happens.

Realistically, though, I think we'd better downshift our expectations and fast. I will approach the next 20 games with attitude I brought to games during the dark Houle years: watching individual players (especially young or unfamiliar players) to track their progress or lack thereof...and generally looking for interesting sub-plots within the larger story of inevitable Habs' defeat.

(Like I said, I'm in full panic mode ) My biggest regret is that this random accident has about a 50/50 chance of costing Gainey his job.

Bergeon makes the most sense to me, provided he understands that he's being hired as a PP specialist and won't get many even-strength minutes. The guy is widely understood to be death in his own zone, hardly a trait we can absorb given what we saw last night. Then again, maybe you could ask the same of Weber (or Carle?) for cheaper.

Christmas for Gainey. Make it work, or lose your work. My prediction, anyhow. *shrug*

As for these possible replacements, what do people know about Backman? Did he have potential? Could he be a reasonable reclamation project under a coach who will likely put him in situations in which he can best succeed?

I am in the same bandwagon as bar, i want Subban.

But not right now, just in time for the 6th game of the year, first game in Montreal.

Two weeks more in AHL learning the game plan, apply it and bring some energy in Montreal.

As hockey fans we want something to be excited about, hoping for

Markov recovery and nearly play .500 is not something fun. It's either

that or we do like people in Toronto wait for the Olympics to start to have

the feeling we will win something this year.

At least give hope to the fans, no other player in that organization can

rush it and ignite the Bell centre.

Between now and game 5 we will have plenty of time watching the 6 defensemen

already with the team.

Great chance for our new defenceman, Spacek/Gill to step it up and fill the void, or for a young player such as PK to get his chance and prove what he can provide. Let's focus on the positives for now and worry if at the end of the month we are not putting up wins. Hope Hammer gets back asap as we could use his help with this loss.

Q: Notice the talk of Breezer, sign schnieder he may come back for cheap.

Subban looks to be about 4th in the farm D depth chart. I'd say, in order:

  1. Weber
  2. Carle
  3. Benoit
  4. Subban
Weber had a calm, steady training camp. Carle is the one that made the most progress. Benoit came back from his exile with a little something more and Sub is just right where you expect a D fresh out of juniors should be.

It all resides in Martin's confidence in Weber. I'd say he's really the only one worthy of a call-up at this point.

I agree with you there. Maybe because he's from my hometown, but I'd be very happy to see Marc-Andre Bergeron join the Habs. I think he holds the record for the most goals by a dman in the Q. He is small, ok, but he is very good with the puck and on the PP. He would surely be excited to come back in the NHL and pumped to play for the Habs.

if if if if you were going to bring someone back it would be dandy over the breezer he can play more positions. He now knows no other team wants him so any contract is good no more pouting like last year. Sign him to 1 year deal for league min and let him retire a habs. its a good deal for him. and us

I dont see any cause for panic yet. Let's see how the team copes with Marky's absence first.

I'm not that negative either. For sure we wont end up high in the charts, and it wont be a pretty 4/5 months. But we get a great rested D-man back when it matters the most: SPRINGTIME!!

If we can keep close to a playoff spot im sure with markov back it will give us that extra boost. And it doesnt matter if you finish 8th or 3rd. It matters how you play then. I have all the faith we can turn it around!
