Dobes has been playing well for over a month and the new backup (Kaskisuo or "Kaz") has been great on his starts so far.

The GA has been a lot better in the last month or so. Meanwhile, I don't think I'd want to be envious of Tampa's farm team which is primarily a collection of fringe minor leaguers with their prospect pool more or less depleted. You can have success in the minors with players like that but there's not much development going on. The Habs are going the opposite way in Laval with a much younger group. Yaremko can take Keeper's spot and Stephens would be a godsend it he was sent down but I doubt that. It may be a good time to do one of the AHL/depth trades I was mentioning with some of the extra Ds like Norlinder and Beaudin

The depth has taken a hit but other than Farrell, these weren't key pieces if nothing else. Laval's playing tonight, down 4-3 after 2. Yup and losing Kidney, doesnt mean you need to make a trade and doesn't change the considerations on contract slots either. If they can move Beaudin for a forward, sure, I guess... or sign an ECHL guy to a PTO, then sure, but the idea that they need to make a trade for Laval just isnt something i can get behind. dlbalr
Well, I think I'd have rather kept the contract slot. Cederqvist is the definition of a low-talent filler.

I just would have PTO'd some ECHLer if they really needed a depth piece. This is nothing more than a third/fourth line scrub at the AHL level. alfredoh2009
putting here, instead of the other (wrong thread): Cool to see a couple of minor transactions Cederqvist and Jandric Noah Laaouan wasn't going to get a chance in Laval given all the D depth ahead of him. He was the ECHL Lions' best defenceman. https://t.co/B4M0eZGlil — Andrew Zadarnowski (@AZadarski) January 11, 2024

Yes, consistently defending well at NHL speed is biggest questionmark for small herd of youth in; Mailloux, Hutson, Engstrom, Xhekaj, Struble, Barron, Harris. They say defending can be taught (but so can learning astrophysics), but some like Matheson/Petry or a Erik Karlsson can skate well and put up points, just never took to defending well (lacking a Markov's/Lindstrom's hockey IQ i assume). He still looks good and has not disappointed—which is encouraging in itself—but he’s only playing at the AHL level so far. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating! dlbalr
Today's lines for the rematch: 2-0 Laval after 1, goals from Andersson and Mailloux. Interestingly enough, Chris Jandric - the other part of the Buffalo trade - is up with Laval and not with Trois-Rivieres.
