Ok good. I see two year ELCs and three year ELCs (on various players). Saw Dobes was an RFA next year and assumed he would not be exempt.

Goalie gets a little longer as waiver exempt than skaters anyway.  They have slightly different rules.

Shouldnt the Habs push, suggest, hint... for another year in NCAA vs the AHL?

Didnt Primeau leave early which ended up leading to the waiver issue last year?

Hickey: Keep your hopes in check for Canadiens goalie prospects | Montreal Gazette

"He has the best record in U.S. college hockey but has the same save percentage and a slightly higher goals-against average than Montrealer Liam Soulière, the goaltender for No. 3 Michigan. If you’ve never heard of Soulière, it’s because he’s nobody’s idea of an NHL prospect."

"Montembeault has won 10 of his 25 starts but seven of those wins have been against teams not currently in a playoff spot. Two of his three shutouts have been against offensive powerhouses Toronto and Edmonton but he is 3-9 against playoff teams."

See I take issue with Hickey here.

Not sure wins and losses is the way to judge any goalie, but especially not Montembault.

No shit, he struggles to win against good teams.  The team in front of him is the reason for that.

Its lazy journalism from an old man who doesnt understand there are better stats to judge goalies by than wins and losses.

First thing I thought too. Totally lazy.

It was a clickbait question ... the person posing it knew there was never going to be an answer ... but they would get a clip to post.

For sure it was a hot topic question. A better response is…

It’s true we are sheltering Primeau for now. It has not been his fault alone. He is working to get his game back to the standard it has been in the past. Our group has improved its team defence so we expect to have him playing at some point in the not too distant future.

It only inflames the situation by walking off. These kind of questions should have been anticipated with Montembeault’s back to back starts.

Everybody knows Primeau’s having a rough time. Everybody has seen him play better.

I broke out laughing when MSL said “tabernac” as he walked off.

For those who follow college hockey, how would you compare Jacob Fowler at this stage in his college career with how Cayden Prime did when he was in college hockey?

We all know it takes goalies longer to develop in many cases. Obviously Carey Price didn't take that long but Jordan Binnington spent 7 years in the minors before St. Louis brought him up and he's obviously done really well. Charlie Lindgren did very well in college hockey, did ok for a few years in the AHL and NHL with Montreal, but now 8 years after making his NHL debut in 2016, he seems to have developed enough to have carved out an NHL career.

Success in college or junior for a goalie doesn't always translate into success at the NHL level and I remember Primeau did very well in US college hockey but since turning pro has probably underachieved for the most part, even though he has had some good stretches.

So the question is, are we being fair comparing their college careers and extrapolating that to the NHL? It probably varies from player to p[layer so it may not be a worthwhile comparison.

What do you think, is it fair to compare and draw any conclusions with Fowler now compared to Primeau when he was in college?

I thought Primeau would be good NHL goalie. He had outstanding college career, similar numbers to Fowler. A great WJC and a 909% in 25 NHL games last year. This year he fell apart. Should never have happened. Must be between the ears

Have had season tickets to University of Vermont forever.  Have seen some very good NHL goalies (Hellebuyck, Ottenger, Swayman, ...) play at Gutterson Fieldhouse.  I think Fowler will be able to make the transistion to starting NHL goalie.  He has a hockey brain and it seems like he is always in position to make the save.  There aren't many highlight reel saves because of his positioning and ability to read the play developing in front of him.

He also has a bit of an edge to his game like Hextall or Billy Smith (Fowler Ejected from the UCONN game for punching a UCONN player who just scored with his blocker).

He has been the Hockey East goalie of the week, month, and year.  Heard he has been working a great deal on his fitness level this year.

UVM has games at Gutterson vs Jacob Fowler and BC on Feb 21-22 if you want to see him with your own eyes:  Link to UVM Hockey schedule/tickets

2:00 tomorrow we will discover Cayden's fate ... as I said elsewhere ... BOLD PREDICTION ... he clears then gets traded as he can then report to the new team's AHL affiliate rather than having to be in the NHL if claimed off waivers ... a team with injuries in goal could then recall him on an emergency basis if necessary ... actually would slightly increase his value I-M-O.

Should it be, or will it likely be his last NCAA year?

From a UVM hockey perspective I hope it is 😄.  I wouldn't be surprised if he makes the jump at the end of the season.  Firm believer that goalies need more time in the AHL before making the jump to the NHL.  I think both Devon Levi and Cayden Primeau would have benefited from more AHL games.

I am not so low on Primeau as others, didn't the Habs claim an unproven Montembeault on waivers?

Many, many, many more goalies claimed on waivers under similar circumstances ended up doing nothing

One can now add a shutout to Dobes’ NHL stats as well :)

I don't track goalies on waivers, so I do not know how many manys that would be. From what I know is that Primeau may turn out to be a Montembeault or a duds like Malcom Subban. or .500 W%  goalies like Anton Forsberg

An interesting tidbit is that Dobes is wearing #75, previously seen on only Hal Gill and ... Yann Danis! What makes it interesting is that Danis was the last Habs goaltender to record a shutout on his debut, a 2-0 win over Atlanta way back in 2005.

Hopefully Dobes will have more impactful career than Danis, though!

I remember being so pumped for Yann Danis

But I'm really sure about Fowler 🤪

Jakub, Jacob, as long as one of them pans out, I'm all good!

(But it's so unpredictable that I'm not counting on either one.)
