Malkin Not Staying In Russia

With the change in the top post at the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, it seemed like a new deal was around the corner. It had been announced that an agreement had been reached back in July, but apparently the team owners are taking a hard line stance in an effort to get as much money as possible from the NHL. It's kind of an odd situation. The Russian League is supposed to be operating under a salary cap this upcoming season, so why the sudden need for the influx of cash?

Well you can't blame the russian hockey federation ... they're trying to grow they're game and league and they basically don't want to lose players like Malkin anymore so they are going to try to milk as much money out of clubs as they can so that the teams won't try to take they're players.

As for Malkin ... this kid has way to many people pulling him in way too many directions ... he fired his agent in June and says I want to play in the nhl ... then that agent finds him a loophole to get out of russia ... what does Malkin do ??? FIRE his ass and go back to his old agent and then sign this one year deal with the same team he already has a contract with ? go figure ... I don't think this kid knows what he wants anymore.

Sucks for the Pens ... but hey, Jordan Staal now has the opportunity to steal his 2nd line center position ... then the pens can trade Malkin's rights for the defensman and wingers they desperatly need.

:?-

staal will player left wing when malkin arrives..you just don't trade a huy like malkin. anyway, once again the pens will finish last and they'll draft that Dman the need so much.

This isn't that bad a thing for the Pens...one more season in the toilet equals another high draft pick. They'll be stacked with talent for the 2008 season, when Malkin will be free to join them.

unfortunatly when all those great draft picks all get good by 22-25 years of age they're all going to want alot of money so a few will have to be traded anyways ... I say keep crosby , staal , flurey down the middle with Whitney and trade Malkin and make at least one run at the cup before they break the pens financially. I'm not saying today but in the very near future.

There are reports that he's disappeared from Metallurg's training camp in Finland, along with his belongings and his passport. Could this be a good old-fashioned 'defection'???

If he comes over in this 'defection'... there'll be hell to pay by the Capitals & the NHL (or, at least there should be...). A contract is a contract and he MUST respect it just as the Capitals & the NHL must do so.

I saw this on Sportsnet, so this may be the motive behind Malkin leaving. NHL lead counsel Bill Daly sent an e-mail to all the GMs, presumably as a little hint in negotiations if the Russian Ice Hockey Federation won't sign a transfer agreement. Under Russian law, a player can notify his club in wriitng within 14 days of signing a player that he intends to nullify his contract. Taking that into account, if a player can prove in writing that he is not under contract to a Russian club, any NHL team can sign a Russian player and the league will recognize and register that contract.

I'm sure he left a note....informing Metallurg of his intent. Pens can legally sign him to a contract in 14 days after his doing so, thanks to Russian labor laws.

There were reports a while back that said Malkin had given his 14 days notice, meaning he was free to go...

it seems all to much like the alex mogilny defection back when communism ruled...
