We hope not next year...they talk about letting them develop...another year in the OHL for Beck-Mesar seems smart. But, likely a solid Jake Evans upgrade...time will tell.

A nice long playoff run would be good to see how he does, maybe get to the Memorial cup (dont think are favoured to though?).

Yes ... but junior faceoff wins don't translate to NHL faceoff wins quite so easily.

 

(That's not to say that I'm not looking forward to seeing Beck in a Habs sweater...)

It got to 5-4 but yes, Rohrer is out.  I hope he gets a look at the Worlds.  It'd be in a limited role but it'd be a good test after a year in which he didn't exactly dominate.

True ... but its a good start ... doubt (m)any players with poor faceoff skills in junior suddenly become good in the pros.

He is playing vs his peers and will be again in the NHL.

Is this a fact or just your guess?

 

You think a Bergeron/Toews were average at faceoffs in junior and then became good once in the NHL?

Crosby is said that he worked hard at it & improved but still not great (53%).

Drafted players are usually the very top players on the junior teams, so they end up taking faceoffs not only against other drafted players but against many who will never play professional hockey, so their faceoff win percentages end up being inflated. And even of the drafted players, fewer than half make it to the NHL, so the faceoff opposition is really far beyond what they see in junior.

Nobody was saying he will be Patrice Begeron, or would be a guaranteed success ... just that, at very least, his CURRENT success on faceoffs would ensure him a fair shot in the pros ... of course, he will have to prove himself at each step up the ladder.

Just asking if actually knew some stat(s), thats all, I was curious.

 

I would expect top NHL centremen, were similar in minor hockey. But, like you say NHL graduates are the elite of lesser hockey calibre.

Most very good NHL faceoff men were also very good in junior.  That part is true.

 

The issue is many who are very good in junior, arent good in the NHL.  Not all good juniors make good NHLers.

 

Same with every other skill.  Success in junior gives you a chance to succeed in the NHL but its no guarantee.

Mailloux seems to be getting better and better.  He is definitely progressing.

He is tied 16th OHL and 3rd in d-scoring.

He had 2a in last game loss; but also took 3 minor penalties in that one.

He always needed game time.  He had limited games the last two years. 

 

A long playoff run is certainly helpful.  He needs it more than any other Habs prospect.

Who would be a comparable NHL d-man? Big d-man who can skate well & fire the puck; but cant defend quite so good?

I remember reading an article a couple months ago where a scout from another NHL team compared him to Brent Burns.
