Trade Value of: Andrei Kostitsyn

They've already traded their 2nd rounder and none of their prospects interest me. What does Phoenix give up?

A guy like Hanzal perhaps?

Rumour right now with Andrei Kostitsyn is that Phoenix wants him and has wanted for a while now, which is a blow in the face of LeBrun's, "Nobody wants Kostitsyn" talk.

Phoenix is looking great right now and is just the type of team to pick up an underachieving UFA.

Pierre McGuire, Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger have all been on TSN 990 in the past 2 days and all 3 have said that absolutely 0 teams have mentioned or contacted or inquired into Kostitsyn. So if Phoenix is in fact interest then maybe they are doing it quietly?

Wow. That is surprising. Could it be that we Habs fans - even those, like me, who consider him no more than a #6 forward - overrate this guy?

With the salary Ville Leino received, I seriously doubt that we do overrate Kostitsyn.

Pierre Lebrun said he wasn't plan A, B or C. More like plan F. Let's see if Phoenix actually offers something. I'd hate to lose AK for nothing this summer.

Just resign him, is fine by me.

Contracts go up, the escrow payment is what is used to bring the percentage down to 57% or whatever it is.

Bottom line is one stupid contract handed out by a gm, creates the new market rate for similar players.

How does it undermine the CBA? The players get a set percentage of revenue, that percentage doesnt go up due to "stupid" contracts.

Escrow is dropping every year, revenues have risen every year and will again this year as Winnipeg has been a huge upgrade on Atlanta. I recently saw a report that said next year's cap would be 68-69 million if the CBA percentages and rules stay the same.

Now its likely that the percentage will be readjusted in the new CBA to be in line with the NFL and NBA but even at 52 or 53% revenues continue to rise at such a rate that their will be no salary rollback needed.

The cap rate is finite every year, though. If the market for Ruutu effects Kostitsyn's pricetag, you have to be able to find value somewhere else on the roster. Because in every fixed overall market, there is value to be had.

We may have to pay Emelin and Diaz fair value this next season (they were this year's bargains) and replace Kostitsyn with the bargain value player.

I like AK46, I think he can be fit in the roster, but we have to remember that whoever was a value guy for us one year may not be the next.

Emeilin will get a decent deal, hopefully multi year deala s well.

Diaz? what is fair value for a guy who can barely make the line on a bottom feeder. What does he like 10 points or something. he shouldn't even get a million.

Ak46 just needs to be put to rest. Traded and move on. Use the money elsewhere.

Whoever mentioned wondering whether habs fans over rate AK46, the answer is yes.

Can barely make the line? I don't have the numbers in front of me but he's likely still top-5 in points by a rookie D while probably averaging the 4th highest TOI on the team. That's a bit better than a fringe player I'd say. He's getting $900k this year and will surpass that for sure this offseason.

Back on topic, for those wondering, watch for the ATB piece on Kostitsyn sometime tomorrow.

ok my bad, he has 16 points. If he is top 5 in rookiw points then just means know one else is doing much. Just not impressed. I would only keep 3 of the current dmen. Emelin, Subban and Gorges.

He wouldn't make teams most other teams rosters.

Back on topic, i hope they move AK46 and are very active with trades.

I have a felling they won;t be.

regarding Diaz? Chris, are you Mike Milbury? sorry for insult and am just kiddin, but a bit quick to write a rookie off arnt you? He wasnt invited to All Star game by accident.

You think Diaz would clear waivers, if he had to?? Not a chance.

AK46 is a solid 20 goal guy who forchecks and if no big offers are out there for him, i hope he gets resigned ASAP.

I think Diaz has looked like a perfectly serviceable #5-6 defenceman this season. The thing to remember about him, though, is that he's 26. He has had many more years to marinade than most rookies. This doesn't mean that he has no further upside, but it means we should be careful not to go too ga-ga over his potential because he's a 'rookie.' He may be due for a raise but I don't think you want to be throwing $2 mil/per at a guy like that.

Streit was about the same age - possibly older.

It took him a couple of years to develop into a top 2-3 dman.

Although his development was kind of messed up in Montreal - much like weber - because for some reason the coaching staffs here like to mess up a players development by playing them out of position as a forward and PP specialist.

Two or three years from now we will be talking about how dumb we were to give up on Weber.

Unless Weber suddenly grows 3 inches and 25 lbs his size will always limit him to PP specialist and third pair Dman AT BEST.< /br> Diaz is the same but the difference is that is the level Diaz is at today, where for Weber its potential that may or may not be reached.  One of them needs to go, they are redundant and so I choose to keep Diaz.

How big is Streit??? 4 years or so ago, everyone was saying Streit has no use outside being a PP specialist. Guess what - they were wrong!

Few years ago I wanted to see what DD can do, everyone here said he is a career minor leaguer - too small for the NHL, while the delusional kept hoping gomez is still an elite playmaker and went on and on about his CORSI numbers. How is that analysis looking now???

You obviously still love Martin, who almost messed up Maxpac and is main reason for the lack of Eller's development.

Messed up MaxPac? He's scored under both guys. And Eller got more ice time with JM than now.

Until he FINALLY got sent down to Hamilton, he was looking like a bust and being wasted on the 3rd/4th line - a lot of people here were saying he has no finish - just as the have bee with Eller. There were numerous posts here saying we should trade him.

Maxpac himself was very critical of Martin and said he would rather stay in Hamilton then play on the 3rd/4th line like Martin was using him. He discovered his game in Hamilton and was called up when we had injuries, Martin had absolutely NOTHING to do with his success.

With respect to Eller under Martin. He was playing with scrubs for most of the games. He got going with AK46 and Moen and should still be playing with AK46 and Leblanc.

So Martin had no say in Sending Patches down.

Also Patch never criticized JM; he merely said it was better for his development to play top 6 minutes and PP time in Hamilton. It was all spin from Marinaro that he was taking shots at Martin, and was not what he said.

TSN now talking that Nashville wants Kostitsyn.

So TSN is saying it's 50/50 for Andrei to goto Nashville (hopefully for the returning Radulov) while Eric Engels is saying Phoenix has been looking at him for quite some time. But there's zero interest in him.

Zero interest is an over statement. I do think it is safe to say that he was no one's top choice, which are the ones who draw the best returns. What was stated in the media was that he was 4th or 5th on most GMs list. ie.. expect him to go late as the pool of top guys dries up. Expect the kind of return that warrants.

Some people on this site seem to think he is a top UFA that several teams will be bidding on. Not likely.

I don't think people understand how trade deadline works. Value is never based on what the player really is but what teams think they need to make the playoffs and win the Cup and what they have to compete with other teams for.

Kostitsyn was never a Plan A but nobody really said he was.

3-4 goals in the last 30ish games doesn't enhance anyones value.
