Savard has a ring, 1000+ pro games under belt, top ten shot blocker in NHL, speaks french, seems a popular teammate and mentor.

So he and Struble not quite apples/oranges, no matter what fancy stats show.

I was thinking about his shot blocking as well. If he blocks a shot during a high danger opportunity, does this still count as a high danger chance for the opponent even though it never reached the goalie in terms of expected goals for? Not asking you directly, it’s more just a thought.

Anyway, nothing against Struble, I actually advocated for him last year when some were certain he wasn’t in Hughes’ longterm plans, but come a playoff series one plays Savard if it’s between the two. It’s often stated that player “x” can be used to replace player “y” and in many instances, there’s no replacing the specific attributes a player brings to the team. There’s simply “moving on” from player “x”. In this circumstance it’s also the case even when comparing with Carrier.

XG includes only shots on goal or those that miss the net.  It doesn't include blocked shots.

Corsi is the one that jncludes blocked shots

... which explains why the Corsi % is by far the worst of the the three stats for Savard: lots of shots (poor Corsi %) but he's blocking a lot (less bad HDCF % and xGF %).

I do expect that Savard will be available at TDL, at whatever Hughes deems to be the right price. As will Dvorak, though if the offer is a late-late pick then the Habs might as well keep him. Assuming no near-term collapse, I expect Armia and Evans to stay until (at least) the end of the season.

I agree with your assessment.

15 games ago I thought that both Evans and Armia would be gone at TDL but I don’t think that anymore.

Short of an incredible offer of course

If Reinbacher does well then I expect him to be the call up to replace Savard when he gets traded. I don’t believe Marty likes Struble.

hmmmm.. I think they might play it safe with the injury… not stick Reinbacher directly  into NHL. We’re Old MacDonald in this scenario.

I agree Marty doesn’t exactly trust Struble though.

If we've learned anything from both Dach and Laine its that it takes time to be 100% as a player even if you are cleared to play.

I think Mailloux will be the callup

Reinbacher might get a game or two if we are out of the race at the end, but otherwise I think its a message of go, get the rust off in Laval and fight for a spot in training camp.

Mailloux the back up plan? Perhaps Struble would get a shot before Mailloux.

Very possible because you are right about Dach and Laine. It took Dach half a season but thankfully he has had several good games in a row

Before Houle left the organization (and before the injury), he thought Reinbacher needed half a season in Laval and then would be up with the Habs.

So in addition to the rehab hes got a little bit to learn in the AHL too

Sadly, I agree with Commando. But I don’t even want him to come up… rather him stay down and concentrate on AHL and the Rocket playoffs.

I don’t remember Slafkovsky ever taking a face off 🤔

I think it’s great to practice, maybe he is good at it.

Someone has gotta take over Dvorak’s face off load.

Slaf and Caufield suck. Slaf slightly better. One of those two needs to get better. (Or both)

It depends on what the games mean.  You very well could be in a situation where AHL playoff spots are clinched and Habs are eliminated the last week and you give him a taste of NHL like Hutson ans Mailloux last year.

I remember each and every one of the 40 faceoffs Slaf has taken in his NHL career ... OK ... no ... I looked it up ... 10 as a rookie, 20 last season and 10 so far this season ... 50% his first two years, 30% so far this season ... obviously teams have scouted him ... 😜

Poll is currently 55% Dobes 45% Montembault

@Butterface

I didn’t make the poll, but I’m glad there is one. We’ll get to the bottom of this debate soon. Could go either way… I hope they compete and make each other better. It would be awesome to have two goalies making saves above .900

I expect that poll to reach a few thousand votes before it closes and I bed Dobes wins

Sure

Im pointing out that wanting Dobes to get more starts is a majority of opinion now.

Ok, thats great

I'm saying that I hope our coach/GM don't make decisions for the hockey club based on the majority of opinion.

In 2010 the majority opinion was keep Halak and trade Price.  (not comparing the goalies to price, just saying that majority opinion shouldn't be how you make decisions).

Montembeault will play tomorrow.

Fans are going a little crazy on two topics right now.

1) Matheson hate

2) Goalie debate

On point #1, I’m glad Suzuki came to Matheson’s defense. He did have a tough outing last game but he’s a really solid mobile defenseman. The type of player Habs fans were always hopeful we would have post Subban and post Markov. I’ll take his turnovers from time to time and look forward to seeing him live when I go to a game again.

On point #2, it’s a first world problem. I don’t see Marty changing his strategy any time soon of playing Monty 2/3 or 3/4 games outside of back to back situations.

Still, all this talk is better than discussing tanking and draft picks ad nauseum.

@Butterface

Interesting suggestion on TSN690 this afternoon ... maybe go 50/50 as Montembeault may end up getting a lot of work at the 4 Nations Face-Off
