It depends what you believe Souray's caliber is. Like too many GMs, you seem to base your opinion of Souray on his last season in Montreal, which was an exceptional season that had nothing to do with the rest of his career. In my opinion, Souray is not a 60+ point power specialist... heck I don't even think he's a powerplay specialist at all...

For example, Adam Oates scored 45 goals for the Bruins during the 1992-93 season. Do you think Adam Oates was a terrific goal scorer in the NHL, or did he just get a big fluke season?

Sheldon Souray has a powerful, heavy shot. In terms of offensive skills, that's pretty much it. The reason I don't see him as a powerplay specialist is that he's not a great passer, he doesn't own great hockey sense, he doesn't have great puckhadling skills, and doesn't have much agility either. Basically, if you cover and pressure him, he's kind of useless at the blue line.

However, he's had great sucess during his last season (and some decent sucess his previous 2) because guys like Markov, Kovalev, and Koivu gave him a lot space on the ice to use his shot effectively. Souray requires quite a bit of time to unleash his shot, and he got plenty of it that season.

Anyway, all this to say that I think it would have been stupid to spend that much money on such a limited player. While I agree that it was his market value, the truth is that many players are overrated and over-valued on the UFA market.

Well, the only team that did not really had that back in the years was....... New Jersey...

media will cry foul next year when 3 home boys( bouillon, dandy and begin) wont be re-signed....maybe bouillon.

I don't think dandy will make the team THIS year, begin is iffy and boullion will make it as probably #6 or 7 def.

I was listening to the guys on CKAC 730AM this morning, and they were reading an article in today's LaPresse about Maxime LaPierre. Apparently Max has been working out alot during the off-season. He's bulked up quite a bit. He's added 16 pounds of muscle. He now weighs in at 212pds (instead of 196pds last year). I just hope it won't slow him down too much.

LaPierre also went on to say that he was really looking forward to play with Laraque next year. He's not the only one!

These sudden (and no doubt steroid-fuelled) weight gains always worry me...we often see players struggle to adjust to the new poundage. We'll see.

Why does it have to be Steriods that make him bigger. He put on 16 pounds in like 5 months. Once the season starts, he'll shrink down to 205 or something.

!6 pounds in an offseason isn't that much if his plan was to gain weight.

Wait until he fails a drug test before you throw the guy under the bus.

That's true. A few years ago, and at about the same age as Lapierre, I put on quite a few pounds of muscle over the summer (waiting for my next semester to begin) while not working out that intensively, and without even taking legal supplements like creatine, whey proteins ...

So that a motivated Maxim Lapierre put on 16 clean pounds over a few months really isn't all that hard to believe. If he came back looking like a young Arnold Schwarzenegger... that would be another story ^_^

I agree, 16 pounds is not that much, especially when you consider it was over a period of 4 months (that comes out to 1 pound per week) which in my view is not excessive at all.

All you need to do is eat a shitload of pasta and work out a bit and anyone can gain that much weight in 4 months.

OK OK, I wasn't speaking from a terribly informed place. (I think my real motive was to take a shot at the smug "we don't have a drug problem in our sport" NHL line). Forgive me, Lappy!!

Markov-Komisarek

Hamrlik-O'Byrne

Gorges-Bouillon

As of right now, Dandy is still our 7th D and has some use to the team. That is what's going to keep him around a little bit longer but as soon as we get our hands on a better or cheaper D, Dandy will be gone.

In today's NHL, I doubt players take steroids to gain weight, they dont need to go over 220 lbs or something. Now it seems that the ideal weight is between 200 & 220, depending on heigth. Look at Komisarek and Latendresse, they both had to lose muscle mass to gain mobility and speed.

In fact one pound of lean mass (muscle) gain per week is enormous. You have to be on illegal stuff or a 15 years old adolescent to gain taht much muscle. Seriously. Studies show that a grown men who trains hard and have an exemplary diet can hope to gain half a pound of muscle per week at best. So 16 pounds in the summer can leads to doubts.

And pastas are mainly carbohydrates, which are avoided by informed strenght training athletes! Healty fats and proteins are key to muscle building.

Spoken like someone who hasn't worked out much in their life; you're over-simplifying the hell out of it and making a ridiculous blanket statement.

First of all, is it sixteen RIPPED pounds....as in 16 pounds of lean body mass (that has been cardio-conditioned as well) with no fat/water weight gain? Because if it is, I'd be inclined to believe he had some 'assistance'. If it's a mix of muscle and fat, then it's a possibility that he did it clean.

Anyone who thinks they can gain a pound of NEW (not regaining muscle that you've had before and lost) RIPPED muscle a week for sixteen consecutive weeks without juicing is kidding themselves tho.

I was under the impression that it was a mix of both!

Geez, no need to be an ass. I simply said that adding 1 pound per week is doable. I never said it was 1 pound of muscle!

and by the way, I exercise 5 times a week!

i'd suggest we save a million dollars and keep breezy as out 7th or trade for a decent def. if possible

I don't give a shit if he drank bigfoot piss or goat balls. I hope he puts the so called weight he's gained to good use. That is one dude that could be the cool version of Tucker or Avery. A whole other beast but COOL.

With Lapierre's bulkup, line 4 consisting of Laraque, Lapierre and Kostopoulos is an average weight of 220 lbs and their averaging 6' 2" in height. :)

I love this big line scheme if the Habs do employ it. Lapierre/Chipchura with Laraque and Kovalev. That's a big line too

Chipchura is 6' 2", 205 lbs presently. For all we know he'll show up in camp with strength and size like Lapierre. Let's hope. :ninja: :hlogo:

Carbo has 2 BIG line options. Latendresse!

Lovin it :hlogo:

So then you should know that putting on a pound a week, in the context of an athlete (as opposed to say someone who's hitting the all-you-can-eat buffet) is NOT as easy as loading up on the pasta. Sorry if I was blunt, but it's just not that easy to put on a good pound in a week with any regularity.

Neither do I...I don't care how he did it, as long as he doesn't test positive. And it's easy to use test and growth hormone to get a whole lot bigger without testing positive.

Has anyone thought that Lapierre's muscles may be all in his abs and just above the knees?????

I think he gained the 16 lbs right there by getting LAID A HELL OF ALOT ^_^

Eklund Scneider to the Habs E4. I guess he thinks with BG comments possibly being out of the Sundin sweepstakes.

If they send Bouillon or Dandy the other way maybe. Schneider is a LD, so he wouldn't be taking Hamrlik or Markov's spot.

If Schneider was any close of Montreal it would be somehow stupid to overpay 7.1m for an overaged 39,

overpaid D that missed 20 games the last two seasons.

If it was not for the salary it would be probable but it's still BS.

At his age, with his salary and with Anaheim in the position they're in, I don't think it'll cost very much to get him. I could seriously see them accepting something like Dandenault and a 2nd.

Hamrlik can play RD as well so a second pairing of Schneider-Hamrlik is possible. I think Hammer-O'Byrne and Schneider-Gorges is more likely though, with Bouillon as a 7th. Schneider would replace Streit on the PP - the only thing of value that our team lost this offseason - while the additions of Laraque, Tanguay (and even little, seemingly insignificant moves like Denis, Paccioretty and Lehoux) along with steady progression from the younger players... means that we are undeniably a much better team than the one we had last year - and that team was good enough to win the East and lead the league in goals for. The only thing that could throw us off is a shitty season Kovalev, or just a ton of injuries.

His cap hit 5.5M, it's doable, we wouldn't even need to move anyone to fit him under the cap.

I don't know, but i'm not sold on Schneider. It seems that all of you guys who have been screaming that Bob should move bodies at D to make room for Valentenko and O'Byrne get now a hard on for a 39 yo... It doesn't make sense in the way Bob is currently turning things around. Dunno, might be wrong...
