He's 27 and aside from 2021-22, hasn't been able to score much at all.  I don't think the Habs consider him a core piece of their future plans.  The 4C spot is one they'd probably like to get cheaper at.

27!! Damn, and I still think of him as a kid, LOL

That is what I expect.

He is becoming Many Malhorta, that 4C you need when you are a bubble team. A reliable center who can win FOs; someone you do not count on for goals.

He can eat minutes, against any NHL line. In my potato head world, he is my 4C for the duration of the rebuild

Small difference in faceoff success.  Malhotra was elite at nearly 60%.  Evans' career success rate is 51%, slightly better than a coin flip.  Granted, the Habs aren't great on the draw now with Monahan traded and Dvorak done for the year but 51% isn't a faceoff specialist like a Malhotra was.  Don't get me wrong, he's serviceable as a 4C, but that's about all he is.

I just read an article stating that New Jersey will likely trade 22 year old Alex Holtz. They said he's a 22-year-old sniper who hasn’t gotten quite enough opportunity with the Devils. The former seventh-overall pick has 13 goals and 24 points playing mostly in a bottom six role.

Are any of you familiar with him and do you think we're interested in him?

It sounds like he's the type of player Kent Hughes would be interested in.

Thoughts??

I agree that he is the type of player Hughes is looking for, 7th over all pick, highly skilled, has scored 16 goals in 83 NHL games so hardly a bust. He just turned 22 so definitely fits the time frame. Maybe a change of scenery would be what he needs. I wouldn't give up our 1st but maybe Winnipeg's and something. I definitely see the makings of a deal here. I don't know anything about Holtz's attitude. Commandant can probably comment better about Holtz.

Holtz has talent but for whatever reason has no trust from Lindy Ruff.  As soon as he makes a mistake, hes on the fourth line again.  I havent seen outward signs of bad attitude or anything like that but something is going on with him and Ruff.

I wouldnt mind giving him a shot.  He can score goals and would fit as a possible 2nd line winger.  His play away from the puck is not great, but not as bad as youd think for how often he gets put on the fourth line by Lindy.

Unless it's done during the draft.  At 22, he's well under control of the team.  Unless he is used as a trade chip, as you suggested, he could still be available at the draft.

Maybe Armia would be a good fit on their bottom 6, we retain or take back a contract, they are also looking for a goalie apparently.  I see the making of a deal here, might involve several pieces or other teams as GHT120 mentioned.

Devils have a ton of cap room with Hamilton on LTIR.

They could take David Savard easily with no retention in this type of a trade.

Of course we have Allen if they want a goalie or Armia for forward but neither is worth Holtz.  We would have to add to those deals.

To piggyback on this, I suspect Holtz is in New Jersey's offer for Markstrom or another impact player.  Not sure Montreal has the best fit.

Likely by trading picks/prospects to a third team for something the Devils want.

They could easily take Savard and he would help this year but looking at Jersey's defense situation next year they have Hamilton, Nemec and Marino on the right side so not sure what they would do with Savard next year.  I don't think Jersey is all in this year especially without Hamilton so they may be patient.

I've had a few variations of this idea in my mind over the last week and I'm not sure if this is the winner yet but here goes:

To Montreal:

F Ryan Johansen ($4M through 2024-25)
COL 2026 fourth-round pick

To Colorado:

F Adam Henrique (75% retained, 50% from ANA, 25% from MTL, $1.456M through 2023-24)

G Jake Allen (50% retained from ANA, $1.925M through 2024-25)

Rights to F Ty Smilanic

To Anaheim:

COL 2026 second-round pick

COL 2025 third-round pick

F Oscar Olausson ($863K through 2025-26)

To do this, four separate trades have to be made:

1) Smilanic to COL for Johansen, COL 2026 2nd, COL 2025 3rd

2) Allen, COL 2026 2nd, and COL 2025 3rd to ANA for Henrique (50% retained)

3) Allen (50% retained) to COL for Olausson

4) Henrique (50% retained on remainder) to COL for COL 2026 4th

Montreal gets some value for Allen in Johansen, someone who I think can be flipped next season as a rental and pick up a future pick for the second element of retention.  Smilanic is this year's Arvid Henrikson, their least valuable asset, just since something had to go to Colorado in the first part of the trade.

Colorado gets their backup goalie on a value contract for this year and next and gets a short-term C upgrade while even freeing up a bit of cap space.  They probably can't move Johansen for Allen without getting a centre somewhere else.

Anaheim is believed to be seeking a second and a third for Henrique plus another third for retention on Henrique.  They do a bit better with this as Olausson (a former first-round pick whose value has dipped a bit) has a bit more value than another third-round pick in exchange for eating half on Allen.  I waffled on adding another small element for them but the Avs only have so many trade chips here.

I am not sure if I like it or don't like it, you obviously put a lot of thought into it, a lot of moving pieces and it's almost too late in the day for me to try and understand it all. LOL

So net bottom line we get a 4th rd pick for retaining 25% of Henrique and swap Allen for Johansen.  Is that correct?

A negative is we use a retention slot for only a 4th round pick. I would rather that slot if there is an opportunity to get a 1st for a David Savard.

The thing with Brian's trade is that instead of retaining on Allen, we retain on Henrique.

Meaning we get that spot back July 1st 2024 instead of 2025.

Which also allows us to use the slot on a summer trade with Savard.

That is true, but it would be our last slot for this year I believe. Now if they have no intention of trading Savard this year (possible) then that would be fine as I can't think of any other player (Gallagher LOL) that they would use the last retention slot for.  Slight possibility of Armia I guess.

Yes it would be our last spot for this year.

Currently we have one open, and one spot will open on July 1st, 2024, and the other on July 1st 2025.

With this proposed trade, wed have none for this season, but two would open on July 1st.

Yeah, there's a lot to it and it's nothing too exciting for the Habs, that's for sure.  This was the best I could think of to get Allen to Colorado with the Avs getting the Johansen replacement and Montreal not having to retain on Allen's contract in the process.

You're correct on the net bottom line.  Last year, they only got a 5th for being a third-party retainer so a 4th is at least a small upgrade.  If they intend to move Savard and use retention, then obviously this wouldn't be on the table.  I'm operating under the assumption they won't move him.  I'm also operating under the assumption that an expiring Johansen might have some value next year, more than Allen which is also baked into my logic of the return; there could be another element of this to come this time a year from now.

It's hard to put together a 3 way deal so kudos for the effort and thought you put into it. The deadline is fast approaching and keeping 3 goalies is not ideal. Hopefully they can find the right fit for Allen as he is a class act and deserves a good opportunity as his career winds down. Even if they don't get an exciting return for him (unlikely), it would be nice to see him in a good spot like Colorado where he has a legitimate chance in the playoffs.

A follow up to the White waivers pickup. This is the type of move I was hoping they make.

Now, I hope they move Pearson out sooner than later to give Armia, Ylonen and Anderson more ice time to get the best return for them in a trade.

this is a very good return for a rental, good job by HughGort!

Now, they should get a filler center on waivers or AHL two-way player from another team instead of handicapping the Rocket
