Habs Fan in Edmonton
8 minutes ago, tomh009 said: Well ... yes, but no. There were defensive mistakes, and odd bounces that resulted in goals. And Seattle had the better goaltending. Overall, though, the score really didn't reflect the flow of the game, Habs were the stronger team for much of the game (and both the Corsi and xG stats support this) but simply couldn't get the puck into the back of the net. Agree 100%, the Habs outshot Seattle 15-9 in the 1st period and were down 4-1, everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Some bad defensive mistakes and bad bounces. A score of 8-2 was nowhere close to being indicative of the play.

Arber needed more gas on that behind the net pass.. or just make a better effort or decision there. Otherwise I think he played okay. Suzuki and Hutson lost pucks at the far blue line and made for great Seattle chances that did not go in our net. Xhekaj’s did. I think we write this off as multiple mistakes costing multiple goals. Unfortunate bounces. Unlucky goaltending. I’d far rather lose a blowout to the Rangers vs the Kraken at this point, but maybe this will help us learn the importance of details in the game. A young team still. Young D. A team trying to get back in a game that got lost early. Josh Anderson was credited with 0 hits last night. Hutson was credited with 1. Xhekaj with 3. i just don’t get it. Does anyone understand why he doesn’t have a hit ? Can anyone explain to me his role on this team other than wait for us to get a penalty ? When Anderson was on the ice last night, team offence and team defence were significantly better than average. Only Slafkovsky was better Stats prove that Anderson was the second best performer on the ice last night
Butterface
So you are saying base his whole role on analytics ? He should not be finishing checks ? He should not be making life miserable for the other team ? It’s great he gets to skate around holding a big red balloon 🎈 that says I was the second best guy not touching anyone in a 8-2 loss ? Is he always doing such great work with analytics or was this just a blind squirrel finding a nut type thing ?

I would argue that Anderson’s decent stats are BECAUSE of his work habits including checking. Also remember those stats I posted are from yesterday’s game only. Look at Mailloux’s stats. The entire team played significantly better offensively while he was on the ice. The team also played significantly worse defensively when he was on the ice. His stats are far to the right of 0 for offence and far to the left of 0 for defence. Anderson does not have those variances in his game. He is playing decent hockey. You need to look at the light bars only: Mailloux and Xhekaj had the most team offence (longest light-green bars). Now, for team offence plus defence, the 7-11 line was indeed better than anyone bar Slafkovsky.
Butterface
True. I looked up his hits on year. He’s up there. i am just pissed the team is looking for a gritty player (apparently) and he has all the tools and he isn’t hitting out of anger in a 8-2 loss. I do not want to give up assets or have the team trade for something that we have all the makings of internally while paying him way over market to kill penalties. He needs to get meaner. Habs are dead last in 5 on 5 defensive matrices. Perhaps Marty’s new system is crap? The system isnt crap. Many teams use it. Our young players dont know how to play it yet though. Yeah the whole team is struggling with it. We had two straight seasons with very good 5 on 5 play and hopefully we head back in that direction as players get used to it

I always tip my hat to a poster who modifies his view in light of evidence and feedback. To be honest, I never saw Anderson as a super-physical hitting machine (although obviously he can mix it up), nor a fighter. He's always been known as a mean player who carves you up behind the play and in scrums. More of an elbow-you-when-no-one's-looking type, and hard along the boards. Or at least, this is my understanding of his default position as a player.

Mailloux has 3 points in 5 games (all 5-on-5) and is still -4 ... he needs more time in Laval.

The issues the Habs currently face on defence may well be related to young players adapting to a system that they didn't "grow up" with at the. HL level. I also think it's because you have too many young D, who don't have enough experience to make the right reads on how how to react that the system requires, rather than just simply concentrating on covering your man. Didn't think it was that difficult to understand my point ... the post to which I responded was touting Mailloux for the 3 points he has scored ... I was noting that must be taken in the context of being on-ice for seven 5-on-5 goals against. He was never sent down to Laval after TC because of his offence, and his defence still isn't ready. I was being a little sarcastic (my bad) knowing that those guys couldn't get sent down anyway. There is some debate on how relevant the +/- stat is. I certainly think it has some relevance. It may surprise some that Arber had the 2nd best +/- on the team last year. One could argue that he usually played against the 3rd or 4th line of the other team which probably has some truth but to be a +6 on a bad team is not bad. There will always be an adjustment period.

This. However, I also question whether the forwards are adequately supporting the D. In other words, mostly a problem of too many young D - along with a key vet, Savard, regressing - but discipline and commitment also seem to be a concern. We need another veteran D. Most of those guys regularly are at the bell centre. I wouldn't be surprised if they all live in Montreal and this is their regular spot along with Ottawa. Just go back and forth between the two buildings. Maybe off to Boston too.
