Kind of sounds like Evans knows he won’t be back

It does sound a bit like that. If they are not close in contract negotiations then they have to look for the best trade offer. I am a big fan of Evans but there is a point where he is too expensive. He will be a UFA and it's his big chance to provide security for his family. I don't blame him for going for the money. The Habs chances of making the playoffs are slim now (4.3% according to money puck), Hughes will be a seller now.

OR ... he has been coached on how to put pressure on HuGo.

I wonder what he is asking for Savard?

We may end up keeping Savard for the season.

More interesting question my be what is he being offered?

Arpon Basu posted the full quote. Evans used the past tense at first, and then caught himself and changed to present tense. I think he's already seeing his Habs career in the rear-view mirror ...

I would think that if the Habs wanted a 2nd round pick for Evans than he would have been traded already. Surely a contending team would have no problem giving up a late 2nd round pick for Evans, especially considering his low contract for the remainder of the year.

Speculation I've read/heard is that Hughes may be waiting for Scott Laughton to get moved ... some "experts" see him as a slightly more desirable version of Evans (*** NOT *** saying I agree or disagree) and once he is moved the "losing teams" will be more pressured to up their offers for Evans ... a possibility I suppose.

Habs get to use Evans for 6 more games before deadline, maybe Hughes sees no pressure to sell him till 1st week of March, when GMs get a bit more desperate? Perhaps he is trying to get a prospect or player in bigger trade instead of just a pick? :spamafote:

That makes sense as the Flyers have pretty much dropped out of the race. Laughton has been a bigger scorer over his career than Evans, also has a year left on his contract after this year so perhaps the Flyers are not in a hurry to move him unless they get a great offer. A pretty good comparable though.

Perhaps, my guess is that Hughes is trying to get more than a 2nd round pick from a contending team. If the right trade is there I think Hughes will pull the trigger rather than wait as he did with Toffoli. Waiting to the end of the trade deadline can work for you or against you.

The other thing I've heard Brian Burke (I know) talking about is that you have to have your minimum price and not accept less than that.

He was talking about trading someone and he wanted a second round pick and it got to right before the deadline and the best offer was a 4th and he said no and kept the player even though it was a free agent he didn't want to re-sign, and his logic was, I can't sell for dirt cheap or other GMs will low ball me every year and just wait til the deadline and then get the players for way cheaper.

So yes, this is all a giant poker game and if you get a good offer, you pull the trigger early.  And if you don't get a good offer you don't pull the trigger at all.

Arpon Basu is suggesting (based on talking to an unnamed NHL exec) that a package of Evans+Armia would bring a first-rounder or maybe more.

I would make that trade, especially if contracts talks with Evans don't have any hope of working out. I am guessing retention on Armia's contract would be part of the deal.  The Habs dropping out of the playoff race (slim chance now) has made these decisions easier for Hughes.

Maybe retention, or maybe taking back an expiring contract.

Id much rather a first than 2 seconds.  Normally i say more picks is better but not in our current situation with so many picks

Yes, it's more about quality than quantity now. Get another 1st and try and trade up as Hughes has tried to do in the past (was successful moving up to get Hage).

And at 2022 draft, Hughes traded a d-man for the 13th pick.

FWIW- 13th pick Nazar seems to be a nice choice by Hawks

I always see Nazar as the 'opportunity cost' of acquiring Dach. At this early stage I think I'd still rather have Dach, but I haven't watched Nazar.

Certainly those two would represent a huge boost to the bottom end of a contending roster. Evans has gotten most of the love, but Armia has been consistently awesome this season.

Losing the two of them massively compounds the depth problem on our own roster, though. Hughes will have his work cut out for him just replacing those guys, let alone supplementing them with nesseceary additions.

I’d try and keep Armia on a cheaper contract.

not me, Habs have too many forward prospects that would be a better fit for the rebuilding of the team and at a cheaper cap than Armia would be

Armia is one of the better pk players in the league. What young player is going to step into his role… I guess Beck, but he will be replacing Evans.

I understand we want to clear contracts, but be careful not to clear too much.

Out of Armia, Evans, Dvorak, I would re-sign Armia  if he is willing to take a pay cut - even if Armia is worth more on the market.

When Armia is 100% engaged and working hard and completing plays all the way through, he is a force.

I like Evans but he isn’t signing cheap just to stay in Montreal.
