hab29RETIRED
3 minutes ago, Prime Minister Koivu said: I have to admit that the trade a superstar for picks route is what I considered for the leafs. Trade Mathews for a haul and fix the roster. Didn't work for Edmonton but it sure worked for Nordiques - although not the same situation. He is not McDavid, and will never be a Gretzky or Lemieux type player. I actually think last year, Phoenix would have been a perfect place to move him. Had a whack of picks and young players. He is a local boy and to get a rink they may have been dumb and given up a lot for him. Glad it didn't happen and the Leafs caved and signed him to a deal that will make him a UFA again before he is 30.
Habs Fan in Edmonton
1 hour ago, The Chicoutimi Cucumber said: ” As it happens, the trade was a debacle for EDM, although I always kinda felt for Jimmy Carson, a legitimate young star who was thrown into a meat-grinder of fan disappointment through no fault of his own. The trade didn't turn out well for Edmonton although they still won a cup in 1990 after trading Carson. . They certainly didn't do much with those 1st round round picks. Carson was a legitimate young star, scored 49 his 1st year with the Oilers but just never really fit in with the team from a personality point of view. Without him the deal isnt as good, and the chances of one of the prospects being better than the main piece are low in these deals. Thats why pollock always said the team that gets the best player wins the trade.

That they botched the draft picks doesn't itself make the trade bad ... as has long been the problem in Edmonton, bad management wasted the picks: 1989: picked Jason Miller, could have selected Olaf Kolzig or Adam Foote ... four spots earlier they blew their own pick on Jason Soules ... potentially they could have had both Kolzig and Foote ... would have been a nice defensive foundation 1991: Martin Rucinsky was a decent choice from what was available, trading him for Ron Tugnutt and Brad Zavisha was typical Oiler stupidity. 1993: Took Nick Stajduhar, could have had Saku Koivu or Todd Bertuzzi. Not that the "better" picks themselves justify the trade, it is important to remember that it was never a "hockey trade" ... it was $10M ($26+M today) for Pocklington and whatever hockey assets Sather could get in addition to that. And yes, the cash coming back was a motivator for Pocklington. Certainly not a pure hockey trade.
Prime Minister Koivu
I didn’t know that Gretzky did some acting as well. Very, very poorly…
dlbalr
I was reading through one of the Russian hockey sites and stumbled upon a note that Alex Galchenyuk has been unable to finalize a contract yet in the KHL because his passport ran out of pages. I don't think I've ever heard that one before. https://www.championat.com/hockey/article-5664306-intervyu-s-vadimom-pokotilo-o-selekcii-amura-podpisanii-galchenyuka-i-dyurando-i-transfernom-rynke-khl.html
Prime Minister Koivu
This has been a topic of conversation here before. Should Carey Price have his number retired?
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
I am 100% on board the Retire #31 train. He was a top goalie in the league for a decade, Hart and Lindsay and Vezina winner, carried the franchise on his back single-handedly the entire time, and dragged us into the Stanley Cup Finals (on one knee) for the first time since 1993. (I hear the argument that you need to win a Cup to get your number retired in Montreal, but the fact is that this requirement is no longer suited to either the franchise or the league today; he got us to the Finals, and that should now be the standard IMHO). Price is the ONLY Hab of the past 30 years who belongs in the same conversation as the greats of the past. He fully deserves to have his number in the rafters IMHO. Seems like we should at least wait till Price retires before doing so though.

IN FACT ... if he were to retire before the season starts, I would support #31 going to the ceiling opening night.

I can think of 10.5 million reasons why he won't retire before the start of the season.

I thought I was being with the "pie-in-the-sky" optimism. Assuming his $5.5M 2024 signing bonus was paid July 1st, there are only $9.5M reasons remaining ($2M 2024 salary, $5.5M 2025 signing bonus and $2M 2025 salary). The Chicoutimi Cucumber
I agree that he shouldn't have his jersey retired before he officially retires. There's really no reason to rush it, other than the desire to experience that magical moment when the organization and the Bell Centre faithful can officially acknowledge, for the ages, what Carey Price's special contribution has meant. If you look at the number of ppg players throughout his career vs the number of playoff rounds won, it's pretty compelling that he should be the first non cup winner to have his number retired. That puff piece video that Don posted, showed the contrast between habs and the rest of the canadian teams.

dlbalr
Tanner Pearson gets a PTO with Vegas. Their depth isn't the greatest so he might have an outside shot at making it.

I suppose the idea would be that Old Man Pearson is OK as depth riding the pine, but the 23-year-old Podkolzin needs to play, yet he’s waiver-eligible and not a self-evident lock to take a regular shift. It’s just one of those things that seems really weird on paper.
