2024-25 Montreal Canadiens discussion thread

Recommended Posts

It's not a true prospect pool ranking, it's everyone 22 or younger regardless of NHL experience.  So Ottawa's has Stutzle, Sanderson, and Greig in there.  (Montreal's has Slafkovsky and Guhle for full-time regulars.)

Safe to assume that Hutson will shine in training camp and pre-season.

Wonder what mgmt's general plan is for him? Get big minutes in Laval for a bit, or sheltered ones with Habs?

2024 Montreal Canadiens Top 25 Under 25: #5 Lane Hutson (habseyesontheprize.com)

"The expectations are obviously high for him as he heads into his first full professional season, and rightly so. However, it’s easy to feel at ease about his debut season when we remember one simple fact: all Hutson does is prove doubters wrong again and again."

Pronman on Hutson;

"There is no doubting Hutson’s offense — the doubt comes down to his defense. He’s a small defenseman without high-end feet or physicality, which is a major red flag in his NHL projection."

Skating: Above NHL average
Puck skills: NHL average
Hockey sense: High-end
Compete: NHL average
Shot: Above NHL average

If you call his puck skills average, I doubt your entire evaluation of Lane Hutson (not Don, i doubt Pronman)

I would have probably put his puck skills at above average and his shot as NHL average but I am no scout by any means.

Anyone who has read my ridiculous quantities of posts on this sites knows that I’m no prospect expert.

I have a feeling, though, that Lane Hutson is one of those rare cases who is basically able to flip the bird at all the Great and the Good so-called experts who stroke their beards and cluck their tongues about his supposed weaknesses. As that semi-skeptical review notes, “all he does is prove doubters wrong again and again.”

Fortunately, unlike with what Subban had to put up with, we have a coach who will not crap his pants every time the kid makes any sort of mistake (even when the kid reliably gets himself out of the trouble caused by his mistakes, as Subban did).

I would not be surprised at all if Hutson takes flight.

I agree 100%. I think Marty is the perfect coach for a young, smaller, talented player who wants to get better. Nobody knows better than Marty what it takes for a smaller player to survive and thrive in the NHL. Plus Hutson is such a smart kid that I expect he will learn quickly from his mistakes.

I think his puck skills are amongst the best part of his game and would have said high end.

The defensive questions need to be answered but i have little doubts on puck skills, skating and smarts.

Ya. The puck skills and skating analysis were way off. His cuts are phenomenal. And the puck is glued do is stick skating speed maybe, but there's more to skating than speed. The dude is Denis Savard shifty.

I don't think the skating analysis was way off. No question he is shifty and his cuts are very good but speed has to count for something and he is no Cale Makar in that department. I think above NHL average is pretty accurate.

30+goals for #13 seems good guess this year.

2024 Montreal Canadiens Top 25 Under 25: #3 Cole Caufield (habseyesontheprize.com)

At a certain point, it looked like the chances of Caufield even besting 26 goals were slim. The best news for him and for the Canadiens was that he scored eight goals in the final nine games of the season, and was a point-per-game player for Team USA at the World Championship.

Would be nice to see how Guhle can do on the left side, but who would pair up with Matheson if he wasnt playing the right? Savard?

Fantasy Focus: Kaiden Guhle – HabsWorld.net

... Guhle likely starts on the second pairing behind Matheson.  With it still being early in his career, that wouldn’t necessarily be the worst thing to start, allowing him to get at least a little easier of a workload.  In that scenario, he’d likely play alongside Barron, a duo that was one of Montreal’s most-used last season before Guhle moved up with Matheson.

Reinbacker seems like a good partner for Matheson as far as styles go but I can’t see Montreal putting a raw rookie in that position - unless Reinbacker looked simply amazing.

Perhaps Guhle starts on the right side but moves to the left side when Reinbacker is ready.

Or maybe good old Savard plays with Matheson.

One month to find out and I can’t friggin wait 🎉

There seems to be a lot of speculation that Reinbacker is much taller than 6’3” and we should get new measurements.

Austria had him listed at 6'2" 187lbs, maybe old info?

Let's just give him a nickname

I suggest Popcorn..... cause his name is close to Orville Reddenbacher.

Good idea, but I like Orville as a nickname better, a good old fashioned name for an old school (maybe) type of defensemen.
