2024-25 Montreal Canadiens discussion thread

I’m glad people have brought this up - not so much because I think Suzuki is a no-brainer for the team, but because I notice the hockey world seems to have bought into this idea that it’s totally fine for Hockey Canada to make hockey decisions based on criteria that have nothing to do with ability. ‘Is he a loyal participant in our program? Did he help us win last time?’

Those are the sorts of old-school considerations about who is and is not a ‘Good Guy’ that are so deeply embedded in hockey culture. Well guess what; they have nothing to do with meritocracy, and they are an impediment to icing the best possible team.

Remember the Olympics in Turin? Team Canada was full of old warhorses that Gretzky and Co felt loyal to because they were Good Guys who had helped them win Salt Lake. The result was a slow, POS team that bombed.

Pick. The. Best. Team.

PERIOD.

I'm fine with not taking Suzuki.  The reality is Canada's forwards are so deep, he was always a bubble guy on the roster at best.  There is no shame in not making the team.

The issue to me is that they phoned a bunch of those bubble guys to give them the news and didn't call Suzuki, presumably cause he turned down the IIHF.  That is just petty bullshit and not how you treat people.

Agreed ... it is another example of why Hockey Canada needs a head-to-toes revamp

Dobes leaves Laval game injured yesterday, he stretched for a save and said likely pulled something.

Imagine Hughes has to be considering adding a goalie.

Are there any capable back ups that might fit the bill as Montembeault's back-up, if Primeau continues to struggle?

Heineman seems is doing fine.

Canadiens weekly notebook: Emil Heineman’s role is a big part of his success - The Athletic

"And that’s the other thing. Heineman is a rookie, he’s played every game except one when he sat out the second game of the season in Boston. He’s earned the trust of his coach and his teammates. Everything is going very well, and sometimes when things are going well for a rookie, it might be better to just leave that rookie alone and let him continue to do what he’s doing well.

And Heineman is very happy with how things are going.

“I mean, yeah,” he said with a big smile, “I’m playing in the NHL.”

Gallagher & Evans are 2 of 3 November stars, kinda good and kinda bad sign.

HW 3 Stars: November 2024 – HabsWorld.net

Canadiens’ Jake Evans avoids serious injury | Montreal Gazette

"Evans and Joel Armia — who can also become an unrestricted free agent next summer — have become one of the best penalty-killing forward duos in the NHL."

“We just read off each other well,” Evans said. “We almost just give each other a look and we know where we’re supposed to be and then I think we know when it’s time to pounce on the opponent. Not try and go on offence, but keep that puck and maybe create something.”

Quitters eh.

Bottom Six Minutes: The Montreal Canadiens are quitters

"... I don’t blame Josh Anderson alone for his dumb penalty, and I don’t blame Mike Matheson for having the most strangely terrible game of his life – the entire team made a business decision that they were going to float their way to a 9-2 drubbing, despite entering that period trailing by just a goal. They completely quit on a game they were still in, in front of their paying customers at the Bell Centre."

It is funny how last year's team, with the same bunch of players, seemed to have more determination and jam than this one.

Brian's summary of last night's debacle repeatedly mentioned missed chances. Can it be as simple as, when you've had a half-dozen Grade-A scoring chances and failed to capitalize, you tend to sag? That seems to happen chronically to this group. Remember the four breakaways againt WASH? 10 Thoughts: Pummeled By Pittsburgh – HabsWorld.net

I hope an amazing second half coming. Slaf and Dach have 4 goals between them after 30 games, not nearly good enough and a huge part of the reason why the Habs haven't progressed this year.

Good post right here. It's been frustrating.

"...He now has seven goals in his seven games since returning from injury, giving the team’s power play a bigger boost than anyone expected. He’s shooting the puck so well that the officials thought he had one at five-on-five in the first, but he had unfortunately pumped that one off the inside of the post."

Excellent article, really hoping that patience with Dach will pay off. He has the ability.

Suzuki 30points 30 games, will he get to 82 come April.

Dont put alot of stock into Dach's comments, just PLAY better and help give the Habs a solid top six. We all know we shouldnt of expected him to fly out of the gates in October; but, he still has 62 games this season to show his stuff, less talk more offense & fewer dumb penalties.
