Pretty sure the Habs were just as motivated to win that game as the Blue Jackets. It’s not like our team was oblivious to the fact they were playing against Laine’s former team.

Someone equated the motivation that Laine provided to Columbus with the example of a player putting up money against their former team. Well…. Don’t you think Laine had money up for this specific game as well?

The game was close. If Caufield buries the puck on his breakaway less than a minute into the third, the game is likely over and this narrative that Laine motivated Columbus to victory never comes out. Sure, we lost. However I would attribute that much more to the fact that we lost Laine early in the game, rather than the inspiration he injected into the other team.

I haven't seen an official announcement, but it sounds like Primeau is going on waivers.

That was announced by MSL yesterday, and confirmed today

BTW - "loan" is the standard description for players sent to the AHL, doesn't signify anything special/unique about the situation ... as I post this, 23 hours 1 minutes until Primeau finds out where he is headed ... likely a few minutes more for us.

Even IF claimed, how long will Primeau spend with that team ... I expect a team with goalie injuries might be interested as a band-aid, but can't see anyone wanting to claim him as part of a long-term plan ... Primeau needs regular work to have any chance to rebuild his career and I don't see that happening in the NHL.

We shall see tomorrow, would be nice if he would suit up for Laval and play great.

I read Carolina (i think it was) may be 1 team to possibly grab him off waivers.

Ottawa could be one to watch for as well.  Ullmark's out the next five games at least and Forsberg is banged up (though expected back on that road trip).  Claiming Primeau could be a short-term solution for them, allowing Sogaard and Merilainen to go back to the minors.

*** NOT *** saying it would be an issue for Ottawa ... but using them as an example, 47 of their 50 contract slots are in use ... would they want to use one on Primeau when they already have four goaltenders on NHL contracts (albeit one a pending UFA) ... but in general, contract slots might be a consideration for some teams.

Using 5/50 slots on a goalie in general isn't much of a concern; quite a few teams have that.  Going to 48 might be more of one though although Primeau might be viewed as a short-term add for some teams.  In that scenario, it's entirely possible that they claim him thinking Montreal would reclaim him later (and if they were the only team to do so, they could then send him down).  In that case, the contract slot wouldn't be too much of a deterrent.

I would be happy for Primeau if he is picked up by a team where his dad played, CAR, DET or PHI. I have a feeling he would fit well in DET but I also do not see a fit in CAR.

He could play in the rotation in PHI. At least that way he would play more than he was in Montreal.

We'll see tomorrow

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s NOT taken. He has been absolutely putrid during a season in which he finally got what he wanted, i.e., an NHL job handed to him.

But I also wouldn’t fall down in shock if the Flyers or someone take a shot at him. Who knows. It worked out for Lingren, another Habs G who floundered for years before suddenly becoming competent. 🤷‍♂️

No takers for Primeau so it's off to Laval for him.  (Unless he's traded in a change-of-scenery swap now that an acquiring team can start him in the minors.)

This move solidifies the goalie depth until next training camp. With Hughes playing well, Primeau can focus on finding his confidence. I am happy about this

HEINEMAN AND DOBEŠ IMPRESS FOR HABS | Prospect Updates

Well, at least 6 of 10 points on this road trip.

Next interesting road test will be in 1 month, they always seem to struggle in California.

Then the big Western Canada roadtrip in March, post trade deadline.

Three things for Canadiens fans to get excited about in 2025 - Sportsnet.ca

"Suzuki has been closer for most of the season, dipping just below the mark this past week to make it 36 points in 37 games. But Caufield has 34 in 37 games and he could give Suzuki a run for his money by netting a gaggle of goals in any given game."

How the Canadiens caught fire and finally found their identity - The Athletic

Bottom six?
"Bottom six might not be a good way of describing how the Canadiens’ third and fourth lines have played over these two weeks. They are driving the bus, and it’s obvious not only on the scoresheet but in the underlying numbers as well."

I think this balance will be necessary for the Habs going forward. I keep seeing people say, " x player would not be a 3rd line centre on a good team" or " that's way too much money for a bottom 6 player". The difference is that Montreal doesn't have a single superstar on the team. I don't think that's a bad thing though. A deep team with quality throughout the lineup will need to be the formula for Montreal to succeed. That means the bottom 6 drive the bus sometimes.

That's the formula that worked for the Habs in spring of 2021, too: there were no passengers, and all the forward lines were between 14 and 19 minutes of TOI per game. If your bottom six is better than the other team's bottom six, you just need to match the opposition's strength in the top six in order to have the edge.
