DON
Heard he didnt hit it off well with some Blue Jacket players. Anyways, hope is nothing much too that, he meshes with Hab players (Dach/Suzuki in particular) well and also scores 40 goals this season. With Columbus he had a 32g-68pts/82gm pace. Patrik Laine arrives in Montreal | Montréal Canadiens (nhl.com)

Armia will also have some perspective on mental health issues so hopefully that will be helpful for Laine.

Patrik Laine arrives in Montreal | Montréal Canadiens (nhl.com) That is true, and I heard of there was 4 players that had an issue with Laine in Columbus, but as far as I know only 1 of them is still there. The players are Seth Jones, Atkinson, Nyquist, and Werenski. They had something against Elvis Merzlikins too. It seems like Laine is somewhat similar to Dougie Hamilton who was often disliked by teammates for not being into doing a ton of extracurricular activities with the team. i.e. it sounds like they are intellectual and/or introverts and like to have time to themselves. Sir_Boagalott
I recently heard something else about Laine that was interesting. When he was with the Jets some fan was able to decipher and figure out his Fortnight account name. Apparently, anyone can do a search on a Fortnight players name and see their stats. Similar to Kovalev, Laine definitely had a serious addiction to playing video games. ex: his account was active for 14 hours 1 day and that was a game day and he played the worst game ever. Plus, Laine even spoke out when he heard the Cannucks banned video games saying they had to blame their poor play on something. However, when Laine's account stopped being used he ended scoring 18 goals in 12 games and in 1 of those games he got 5 goals. Laine likely started using a different account but is he still playing video games? Hopefully, now that he is living in Montreal he'll have more people to hang out with and things to do other than play video games.

I've also heard this and usually really respect Portzline, but this one really seemed to come out of left field. Why be willing to go public about the team supposedly hating Elvis, but wait until Laine is gone to say they hated him too? And the timelines don't seem to add up. Sure, shipping out Atkinson for Voracek came out of the blue, but Nyquist was a pending UFA deadline rental, while Jones had made it clear he was gone no matter what. And if those guys were shipping out for crapping on Elvis and Laine, why give the 4th guy, Werenski, a huge extension?
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
We shall see. Personally I don't care if someone is an introvert as long as he delivers on the ice - and I rather suspect the whole 'video game addicted player' thing has been exaggerated, in general, by hidebound old-guard NHL types for whom video games are unfathomable exotica. (Although 14 hours per day, if true, is troubling. Then again, he's sought help for mental health issues, of which that may have been a symptom). It's also worth considering that jock culture lends itself to bullying, unfortunately. It's not impossible that the guys who 'hated' Laine were in fact demonizing/bullying a guy for being shy or reserved. And that may have contributed to mental health strains and even poor play. On the other hand, if he really is a lousy teammate, then we have to hope the young guys on the team are tightly-woven enough that he won't contaminate the team culture. (One advantage to being an introvert is that you're unlikely to assemble a bunch of allies and therefore divide the room; so we should, even on a worst-case scenario situation, avoid a Kovalev-vs-Koivu situation). Doesn’t matter what folks get addicted to but the addictive behaviour is a glowing red flag. I hope Laine is on a better path now and has support to keep him there. There seems to be a very close locker room in Montreal and Suzuki being an introvert is probably helpful for Laine

Laine arrived in November, they were both gone that summer. A little over a season for Nyquist. He made it to the trade deadline. I guess that's enough time to not like a guy, especially one who is competing you for PP time and 1st line minutes, in the case of the two wingers. That is the least of my concerns. He seems happy to be in Montreal, his teammates seem happy to have him. My only concern with Laine is staying healthy

I agree with some of the old guard people in NHL management would be against video games. However, it doesnt seem like its an exaggeration though. Like I said, anybody can look up a Fortnight players account. ex: if any of us played that game using the same alias as on here any of us could search your player profile and see all of your gaming stats. A fan deciphered Laine's account name and I forget what his exact alias was but it was something like however Winnie the Pooh is said in Finnish with 29 on the end. The 14 hours on a game day is apparently factual. 23 minutes ago, Habs Fan in Edmonton said: My only concern with Laine is staying healthy Yes, and that might be a solved issue as well if his issue was depression. Depression can cause loss of interest, affect decision making, and be a source of physical pain. So numerous of his on ice issues could be related to depression and now be solved with him being in Montreal.

Commandant
The video game thing was from his Winnipeg days, and in his first or second season. It was also reportedly dealt with back then. We have no idea what the issue was that put him in player assistance, and we shouldn't assume what it is either.

Not saying its not possible that those players didn't get along with Laine, I just question the implication that the Jackets shipped out those guys because they told Jarmo that Laine was a problem in the room. But maybe someone willing to hire Babcock really is that petty and unprofessional.

Im just questioning that in at least two cases, he came in and they lost premium ice time to him. How much does that play into it?

JoeLassister
In the end, the return for Halak in 2010 was a career AHLer and Lars Eller, a great prospect at the time. Now, in 2024, the return on Harris is a 2nd rounder + a somewhat star NHLer with a massive cap hit and some question marks, but with a lot of potential if he can put it together. It's like going back to square one with that trade, 14 years later.
