Amazing deal for the Habs. We clear out some of the log jam on D and also fill a much needed spot in the top 6. It's a high cap hit, but we have plenty of space and it doesn't hinder anything too important in the near future. We can either resign him, trade him at the deadline next year, or just let him walk to free agency. I fully trust Hughes in each of those scenarios.

Man this team is going to be fun to watch

Yes, I have complete trust in Hughes, he obviously gave this a lot of thought and his patience paid off here. I break this trade into 2 parts:

1) Patrick Laine for free (cap space)

2) Jordan Harris for a 2nd round pick. Frees up a spot now for the young D and 2nd round picks are good draft capital

Hughes obviously thought this was the best use of cap space.  There is risk but I like it.

We have never had this kind of depth on the main roster before or the talent in our farm system like we do now. Montreal is going to be a scary team to play and it’s going to be fun to watch. Props to all the Habs fans who stuck with this full on rebuild .  We are about to enjoy the outcome. Lets Goooooooo

Harris for the 2nd is a pretty close to fair deal.  I'm guessing there wasn't much interest in Laine, as value-wise he was nearly given away.

No CBJ didn’t want money coming back, they wanted his cap hit off the books completely

Obviously the injury to RHP forced Hughes's hand here.

Kidding. Pleased with the deal and hope it works out favorably. It feels strange that the Habs were linked to a player, and for once, the rumor actually plays out. Since he has worn #29, please don't take #92.

Agreed, that was obviously Waddell's preference so he had to take little in return.

And clearly Waddell has no issues dealing with Hughes!

Interesting, could be cool if he can be effective and score a bunch.

Would be great if he can play 2 full seasons and produce at his regular pace.  Would make him a huge asset next trade deadline or a great addition to the team.  I don't really see a downside for Montreal in this trade.  Worse case scenario is Laine doesn't play much or doesn't produce, then it's still Harris for the 2nd.

Absolutely. They have done their homework and they believe this is a risk worth taking, similar to Monahan, Dach and Newhook.

Hughes live right now.

Says Waddel allowed him/MSL to talk to Laine directly before the trade. In talking to him they we're really happy with how far he'd come and that he's in a good spot after the player assistance program

Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky

Laine - Dach - Roy

Armia - Newhook - Gallagher

I could be very happy with that top nine (assuming, of course, that Laine and Dach play to their potential).

considering how well Armia and Gally ended the season with Newhook... i can see the top 9 exactly that.

also without anymore moves

Evans Dvorak Anderson

Boulet and Pezzetta scratched.

I honestly couldn't believe it when I saw the details.  When I heard of the trade I wasn't upset that the Habs got Laine but I was worried of who or what they had to give up to get him.  After I saw the info I felt silly for being concerned.  It would have been better if CBJ had retained some of his salary, but then the price would have been significantly higher for them to have done that.  Even though Laine is now paid more than Nick for the next 2 years - over all I'm certainly thrilled with this move.

Yep, 100% that.  It's like Habs traded Harris for a 2nd and had to take Laine off CBJ books.

Right on, the Habs are slowly turning into giants!!

I think this is good for Harris as well. I think of he can get regular time on a 2nd pairing left side. He can be a very well rounded defenseman. I like him and I'll be watching is career with interest. Just hope he doesn't dominate. I'd hate that.

No lose deal. If Laine scores 25+ goals it's a steal.
If he doesn't we get a 2nd for Harris - who had to be moved . We still need to move two  probably two more dmen by the. Trade deadline if some of the young guns progress.

Ive been hoping for this deal to happen since June and was worried we'd trade our 2nd first rounder to address the hole on wing.

The only bad move this mgmt team has made so far is Lekhonon for Barron and 2nd. And that deal was because Bergevin gave Armia an extension instead of Lekhonon

I really hope Roy and also me still be effective and productive in the second line. I still don't see us as a playoff team next year, but this is going to be a fun team to watch and should be in the hunt for a wildcard spot. Playoffs is possible if EVERYTHING goes right. Ideal situation old be the panthers struggle and get out injury luck and then not o Lyndon we have a better shot, but can get a kickass return from Monohon- the gift that keeps giving!

Playoffs ... it's too early to say, but I'd say the Habs have 20% of better probability of making it. Of course the other 80% says not everything will work out and they won't.. 🙂 But I do expect them to be in the mix.

Love the trade and can't believe we get a 2nd to boot!

Brick by brick Hughes builds this team.

Lord knows us die hard Gen X’ers have endured enough pain over the last 30yrs.

Barring injuries this team is gonna be sneaky good.

I agree that he was essentially given away, but I imagine there was interest by other teams.  However, any other team likely wanted CBJ to retain salary.  It seems clear that the entire point of CBJ trading Laine was to free up that cap space.

Out of all the teams in the NHL the Habs were in the best position to take on the entirety of Laine's contract.  I don't believe there was any other interested team that could have fit Laine's contract and be under the cap.

Montreal was the first team to make an offer without retention and only got in on this over the weekend.  The fact this got done so quickly after that is a telling sign that clearing the contract was the only priority for them here.  (Now we'll see how - or if - they spend that extra flexibility...)

I was just watching his presser.  I loved his answer when asked if he wanted to return to being a 30 goal scorer he said I want to be a 40 or 50 goal scorer.  When I heard him say that I was so hoping he'd take it tad further and say he wanted to prove the Leafs wrong for drafting Mathews ahead of him.  That would have been a great dig at the Leafs.

I'm trying not to get too excited..to manage my emotions, but I gotta be honest here. I wet my panties when I heard this on TSN 690 this afternoon!!

I just hope that Laine and Dach can both play at least 75 games each this year.

Quote

Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky

Newhook - Dach - Laine

Armia - Dvorak - Gallagher

Roy - Evans - Anderson

I would go with...

Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky

Anderson - Dach - Laine

Armia - Newhook - Gallagher

Roy - Evans - Dvorak (pezzetta)

I would trade Dvorak before Christmas!

I know that Anderson did NOT have a good season last year, but I do believe that he can bounce back with a solid 20-25 goals if he could play with Dach and Laine. Now that would be a BIG line! Nobody below 6'3"!
