Quote

Demidov tore up the MHL circuit in Russia in his draft year with 23 goals and 60 points in 30 games, leading the Montreal Canadiens to select him fifth overall in June’s draft.

He has taken his game to new heights this season playing a regular role in the KHL.

The 19-year-old broke the KHL record for the most points in a season by a player under age 20 on Tuesday, bringing his totals on the season to 19 goals and 44 points in 52 games. He broke the previous record held by Minnesota Wild superstar Kirill Kaprizov, who had 42 points in 49 games in 2017.

“He’s brilliant,” said Button of Demidov. “Creative, skilled, competitive. He moves the needle.”

Record is nice and I’m excited about Demidov, but the KHL is not the same league now as it was in 2017.

Exactly, I've been saying this for a while.  You can't compare stats from pre-Ukraine war to now... the league has so many fewer foreign players, and the quality of those players has dropped too.

“Pressure Makes You Better”: Ivan Demidov on KHL Records, Development, and His Future with the Canadiens

“Honestly, I don’t even know if I could play center. I’d have to try. I played center a few times in junior hockey and felt fine,” said Demidov. “But SKA never uses me there. Face-offs would probably be the key factor—I don’t always win them.”

“I think my English is decent, but it’s not for me to judge. I study when I have time, taking online lessons with a tutor,” the young star said to RG. “I’ve also started learning French. The hardest part is the pronunciation. Actually, everything about it is difficult—English is definitely easier.”

Thorpe 2a

Hage 0pts 15 PIMs in a 6-1 loss.

Koivu 1a today

Sam Harris with his 17th-18th-19th goals of year.

Devils advocate a bit, but I wouldn’t be against another year for Demidov in Russia

Hell ####ing no.

Absolutely not.

He comes over this summer and gets away from SKA messing with his ice time

He's NHL ready IMO and id start him there, but even if you believe he needs more development time, the AHL with a coach from the Habs organization is so much better than messing around with an organization who dont care about development

Under no circumstances is another season in SKA a good idea.

Great to hear this update of his play.

And his candid description of scoring on breakaway.

“I panicked and I tried to do something, it went in.”

Oliver Kapanen impresses in Ängelholm - Habs Eyes on the Prize

"Oliver Kapanen started his SHL career a bit sluggish as he adapted from his time in NHL with the Montreal Canadines. This led to a break up of what was supposed to be one of the top lines, if not the top line, in SHL this season: Filip Hållander, Kapanen, and Jonathan Dahlén. As the team sheets arrive, the line is back together and it will be interesting to see if they can find the chemistry we all expected them to have at the start of the season. Hållander and Dahlén are the top two scorers on the Timrå this season."

On yesterday's Basu & Godin podcast, Basu mentioned that he had chatted with Mikko Koivu (who is in Montreal for the 4 Nations) about Aatos. Apparently Aatos missed more than a month of hockey because of a bad throat (I think) infection and it has taken him more time yet to get up to speed, so that at least partly explains his low production this year. (TPS, his team, is also second last in the Liiga so there is not much scoring happening anyway.)

They also said he's getting less than 6 minutes a game on average, and no powerplay time when he does play with the big club.  Of course when he plays for the U20 team, he's getting 18-20 minutes

Some of that may be because he's not back to full health yet ... or maybe he's just not good enough.
