2023/2024 season playoff discussion

That McDavid guy ... the Oilers have all of three shots on net, yet he's got them in a 2-0 lead. All of them of the high-danger variety, but still. Wow.

Shots 14-2 in the final frame ... and yet it wasn't a rope-a-dope performance. Seven of the Oilers' eleven shots were high-danger ones, clearly they had been told not to just throw the puck at the net and possibly give Dallas an odd-man rush opportunity. Super aggressive forecheck, too.

Can't win many hockey games with 11 shots, though. Unless one of your forwards is named McDavid ...

This team and 2011 Canucks are the only good Canadian teams to go to the final since 93. Maybe 04 flames.

That cheap shot at the 21 team is totally uncalled for.

Pretty amazing stat that “the Worm” has played for five different teams in the Stanley Cup finals.

I loved the dirty bastard when he played for us.

Yes, he was a massive secret weapon for us. One of the smartest players I’ve seen.

The Oilers hung in there, amazing goal by McDavid. Florida will be tough.

McDavid’s goal will be replayed for years to come - especially if they win.

I think the Oilers are going to do it, because of their newfound defensive prowess. Should be a fascinating Final.

Haha. Their defense, defensive forwards, and goaltending were very good.

I want Edmonton to win, but I don't feel bad in the least that they lose when the officials disregard a clear major on the board to Ekman-Larsson that had one of the NHL's best officials staring directly at it, less than 5 feet away.  Zero excuse to not call it, then call a couple of trips after.  The NHL is sending a clear message that they want the game fast and entertaining over player safety.

Let's talk about reverse engineering again... and Stanley Cup | Radio-Canada

"...

What kind of season have you had (100 points and more)?

Do you have a reliable goalie (.915 save percentage and above)?

How do you play defensively (top 10 in the NHL)?

How do you fare at 5v5? (top 10 in the Corsi index and top 10 lowest total goals allowed in this situation)

Do you have playoff experience (4 or more series in the previous 2 seasons)?

In summary, our reverse engineering exercise revealed that these six indicators were the ones that had the most influence on the length of the playoff runs. Of the 16 teams in the playoffs, only the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes checked those six boxes. The Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks, who checked 5 of the 6 boxes, deserved to be watched very closely."

Very interesting, thanks for the share.

Goaltending may prove the difference in this series…and if so, what a painful denouement for the Oilers, who have relied on patch ups in nets for years.

They shouldn't have given a huge contract to a goalie who was a bust for 8 years, and then had one good season as a backup and one covid season as a starter
