The first time was an ACL but if this was an MCL or LCL? Those carry much shorter recovery timelines. If it's a shorter-term recovery, he could still have close to a full offseason to rebuild strength.

Commandant
He's a quality starting goalie. Sure he's not Carey Price, but he's still a good starter. (He's also not paid like Price). Don't know why that's so hard to accept.

It does seem like people have gradually come around to Monty, but still - it's as though his bad pedigree as a waiver pickup blinded people for a long time. The other piece is lack of playoff experience; outside one's home market, that's where reputations generally get made. As far as I'm concerned, he stepped in as a quality starter from the moment he arrived and has never really wavered 🤷♂️
Commandant
Well we had the suggestion yesterday that they were certain Dobes would steal the starting job by the 30 game mark next season.
BCHabnut
I don't know why, but even when he was new to the Habs and wasn't doing well, I still liked Monty. Not sure if it's his positioning, or movement or what it was. Its nice to see his stats climbing.

Ahhh, fans are always saying Rookie X is the second coming. I wonder if watching Price all those years distorted Habs fans' understanding of what a #1 is. As you say, he's not a monster like Price, he just provides quality netminding.
GHT120
Sitting at #8 I am willing to accept that he is ever so slightly better than #9 Jake Allen ... but don't particularly want to depend on either for a playoff run.

We don’t need a guy for a playoff run YET. Right now we just need the goaltending to be good enough to get into the playoffs next year. 2C and an upgrade to our RHD is what we need going into next year. We are getting Demidov next yea. let’s get into the playoffs next year, get the kids some playoff hockey experience and than see where we need improvement. I’m good with the Monty and Dobes combo for next year and waiting on Fowler. But I do want to address the two big holes in our lineup. I don’t want to start next year hoping Hage can make the jump, or Dach will be the guy at 2C. I also don’t want to hope that Reinbacher and Mailloux will be ready and be able to bump Carrier to the third pairing. As an aside, If last night was not an anomaly, I don’t want to have Carrière playing a regular shift against players like MCDavid or Draisaitl. I know those guys make a lot of dmen look bad, but a dman should never have such s hard time moving the puck out from behind his own net. I s the getting in this year is a bonus, but we shouldn’t be moving any significant assets right now unless it involves s long-term solution at the 2C and RHD position. Agreed ... although while I see value in the chase I hope they don't make it ... my fear is that if they make it this season and fall just short next season some people will freak out ... progression is not always linear. Yeah I agree with the centre issue. Hughes needs to try and solve that this summer. Even if - big if - Dach evolves to a great, healthy player. No idea if Reinbacher will be ready to start NHL next season but EVERYTHING that I’ve read about his play since returning has been overwhelmingly positive. Question with Reinbacher is how much time does he need in Laval given all the time he missed. And will he be a viable first pairing RHD at some point NEXT YEAR. We are set - in fact over stocked on LHD. But we need more depth on RHD. how many waiver exempt games does Mailloux have left next year? He will need to be brought up at some point. Not sure if he will ready for top 4 role. I’m ok with Carrière on. Second pairing for now until Reinbacher is ready, but don’t think he is a top pairing RHD, and ideally he is the bottom pairing, when we are ready to compete

He will probably Xhekaj-level next year at the begining of camp. But Strubble level later. By the end he should be very close or at 2nd-pair level IMHO. Coaching an scouts are impressed on how well he is adapting. His skating is so smooth

He's only at 8 NHL so he's fully exempt through next season, then waiver-eligible starting in 26-27.
dlbalr
Beck and Dobes were papered to Laval. Not sure how they got around the rule of needing to have 2 goalies on the roster at all times there but those were the moves of the day from Montreal.

Prime Minister Koivu
Is this move to have a good look at Roy so that Hughes can make a decision on his future? I kind of feel that Roy is a bubble player that has a lot of competition for very few roster spots.

With Newhook moving back to centre and Beck not playing much (11:52/11:34/9:43/7:49/8:22/11:56) in his six games since being called up it not only is a chance to get another look at Roy but also makes sense to have a winger up. DON
I dunno, i am fine inaction. The Habs Took the Easy Way Out at the Deadline – HabsWorld.net "When you’re an injury away from playing Michael Pezzetta, a player that the coaches clearly don’t trust, how serious are you about attempting to compete for a playoff spot?" Trophy Tracker: Hutson of Canadiens picked to win Calder as rookie of year | NHL.com Hutson received 69 voting points (six first-place votes) from NHL.com's 16-person panel. He edged out San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini, who was second with 66 points (seven first-place votes).
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
Yeah, I’ve seen a few stories about “Montreal fans angry over inaction” in my feed…I think it’s just clickbait nonsense. I don’t think passing on a 2nd for Armia, or (conversely) not throwing assets away to load up for a playoff push, are much of a big deal either way. 17 hours ago, DON said: I dunno, i am fine inaction.
