Anderson actually looked pretty engaged and very aggressive on the PK.

I think its great they are plying him on the PK.  I've said this before numerous times:  being 6'3"+ is a big advantage.  They have longer arms and sticks = longer reach.  They also have longer legs = take bigger strides = move a greater distance in an instant.  A tall guy would be better at defending than a short person.

They need Hutson on the first unit. There was too much standing around on the 5 on 3.

The second PP unit looks better than the first unit.  The first PP unit just stands there and Dach tries to thread a pass through the middle to Caufield.  At least the second unit there's some level of unpredictability to it.  The first couple of PPs they were feeding the bumper in middle, which setup the goal down low.  Neither of those 2 plays have been even setup since the goal by the first unit.

It's actually incredible that it is so obvious that a rookie defenseman in his 3rd NHL game should be on PP1 over a 62 point veteran defenseman

I didn’t want to discuss Montembault until the match was over but now the analysts are during the second intermission.

Nothing extremely spectacular but he’s playing solid.

Hoping this year is different and the usual inevitable doesn’t happen in the third. Leafs have a lot of shots so his teammates will have to bear down in the third.

I agree ... he is making the big saves but even the one on the Matthews on-timer was not I-M-O a GREAT save ... he was well-positioned and blocked the shot (but gave up the rebound) ... he is also not taking himself out of position ... some of the credit must go to the team defence not giving up chances that require great saves ... the posts also help.

So much for Toronto’s longest NHL streak of 227 games without being shutout.  🙂

Montembault deserved the shutout.

I would like Heineman to take Armia’s spot on the second line to take advantage of that shot.

The question that MSL et al will have to consider is whether there are things that Armia brought to the Dach line tonight that Heineman might not be able to replace, and what impact would the change would have ... they are different players.

Three random thoughts on the game:

1) Monty should be the 1st,2nd and 3rd star

2) It was painful to watch at times, looked they were handling a hand grenade not a puck in their own end at times

3) As mentioned by others Hutson should absolutely have more power play time, they need his creativity, the 5 on 3 was awful

There will be nights this year when play well, lose and we will say they deserved a better fate, this was kind of the opposite.

Yes, people smarter than I can make those determinations.

My entire reasoning is that the Dach line lacks a shooter and Heineman has a good shot. Armia is most certainly better at the defensive end

It wasn't pretty, but it worked.

Forward line TOI and xGF%:

Caufield-Suzuki-Slafkovsky 11:17 6.6%

Newhook-Dach-Armia 5:59 36.1%

Dvorak-Anderson-Barre-Boulet 3:41 72.1%

Heineman-Evans-Gallagher 6:33 66.1%

There is a difference between..... Hutson should be PP1 and Matheson PP2.

And The Habs can get rid of their best defenceman for 5v5 play, who scored 62 points last year.
