If goalies are voodoo, how do we know which one of them has future Vezina potential? 🤔 Can't have it both ways.

EDM pulled off some pretty slick moves to save the ship. I don't really get what either Vancouver or San Jose were thinking. In fact, I almost wonder if they regard the offer sheets as dirty pool and therefore went easy on that POS Bowman in order to make a statement about offer sheets.

Goalies are voodoo unless they aren't. I place most 1st round goalie picks/prospects more in the "can't miss" category rather than "future Vezina". For every Price, there's a Pascal Leclaire lurking in the shadows. But for a team to utilize a 1st round pick on a goalie, odds are quite good he will at least become a serviceable NHLer. Sorry, Malcolm Subban.

Here is where I'll agree with @Commandant as far as voodoo goes. Elite goaltending is hard to nail down. Whereas the last three Vezina winners were 4th, 5th, and 6th rounders, nearly every Hart for the past 20 years is an early 1st rounder (Kucherov and St Louis are the only exceptions I can think of). Similar for the Art Ross, only one or two exceptions there as well.

Of course, I have my own theories as to why. But if you want #1, there is little to no instruction for goalies (at least in the US) until, junior age at the earliest. And the instruction they do receive is half-assed at best. For all of the youth programs that tout former NHL/NCAA D1 retired players as coaches, goalies are usually stuck with some dude that plays D level beer league.

Habs have a growing and underrated Montembault and a super promising Fowler

AGAIN, Primeau had better NCAA numbers and now he is not seen as a very promising starter (fingers-crossed he develops into a good one).

So, Fowler is doing well but ...

Oilers WILL not match offer sheets.

According to Freidman, they see Podkolzin and Emberson as the replacements in their lineup.

I think the issue is not this season, its the 2 year deals...  Next summer Draisaitl and Bouchard are due raises.

And that's a big part of the reason the Blues offered 2 year deals knowing the 2nd year would be tough. It hurts the Oilers to get such a minimal return for Broberg/Holloway but they left themselves in a vulnerable position and are paying the price.  They can always get a rental defensemen at the deadline.

I'm surprised especially after their recent roster moves.

I thought they might not match Holloway but Broberg is a tough pill to swallow.

At the end of the day, the Oilers have more cap space than I expected them to.

Bowman working hard to give Draisaitl no reason to sign an extension.

I think the Oilers are looking at 2 years down the road and realize they will need some cap space.

The Oilers have made several good moves this offseason. It cost them two decent prospects and the buyout cost from Campbell but they have fixed a huge problem.

Solid work by Edmonton this offseason

Yes it hurt losing Broberg and Holloway BUT resigning Draisaitl, Bouchard and McDavid is their number #1 priority.

They have also created a small cap space cushion.  They will let that accrue and make a play for defence at the deadline.  I think there's a strong change that it will be Savard's destination somewhere between January and the trade deadline.

Trying to figure out this trade?  Was this trade part of an agreement the Oilers had with the Blues in order not to match as it seems like a one sided trade??

Yeah, this was an inducement from St. Louis for Edmonton not to match.

Id have done something similar to that...

it basically breaks down, in Habs equivalents to

1) one of the goalie prospects not named fowler,

2) the calgary pick (the pick sj gave up is the vegas pick and top 10 protected) and

3) owen beck (equivalent to david edstrom)

for askarov and 3rd.

If Askarov pans out in the NHL, yes. He looks good, but he's not without risk.

Neither is what Nashville got for him.

Hate to put this out there but there are rumors flying on Twitter of a tragic event involving Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew.

Man I hope it isn’t true.
