Well, NJ wants to get better fast and is dangling the 2nd pick to do that.  They also have $25m cap space.  I don’t follow the Devils much, so I’m not sure who they have to re-sign that will eat a lot of cap space.

I will say, Anderson, Petry and the 26th should be close to getting a deal done.  A top-6 forward that is in demand and a top-4 defenseman.  Only down side with Petry is Hamilton also is RD.  It’ll eat half of their cap space, which is where my lack of knowledge on their roster comes in.

On top of Hamilton, New Jersey also has Damon Severson on the right side who would probably be ahead of Petry on their depth chart.  I don't think they'd have much interest in him, to be honest.  A combo of Anderson, Petry, and the 26th wouldn't move the needle for them as a result.  They're looking for a top-line forward and Anderson isn't that.  It's Suzuki or Caufield or it's not happening.

I tend to agree. I actually think that substituting Mailloux for Petry in that deal makes it a lot more enticing for New Jersey.

Suzuki or Caulfield aren't going anywhere.

I think that Montreal's most likely dance partner for moving up in the draft is Philly.  They didn't sign Tortorella to do a rebuild. Anderson is the type of player Philly would covet, throw in a couple extra picks or take back a short term bad contract and there is the basis for a deal.

It also depends on whether there is someone at 5 the Habs really want.

Would Caufield + Andersson be worth it for us to draft Slafkovsky?

Im sure that is at least the pricetag.

NJ gets a small 30 goal scorer and a powerforward ok for 2nd line.

We get a potential future superstar winger.

I personally would need the 2nd and Another nice piece to trade Caufield

And Caufield isn’t? I know acquiring the 2nd OA won’t be cheap, but I don’t see the Habs trading Caufield to do it.

I am guessing Caufield-Suzuki are untouchable and non-starter for trading.

Not sure i would even trade Caufield for Slafkovsky or Cooley straight up.

I 100% wouldn’t. We already know Caufield is a 20 (and easily potential for 30) goal scorer at the NHL level. Cooley and Slaf are still unproven at this level.

No.  No.  No.

I would think trading up to, maybe 15, is more realistic?

Nope, not a chance.  Too much to give up.  Caulfield has already proven he can score at the NHL level.  Plus Anderson?

New Jersey would jump at that in a heartbeat.

Yea, unless BIG pieces are involved I can’t see moving past the top 15.

I see moving up 5-6 places to draft a guy HuGo felt slipped and they really love.

could be one of the big d men, (mateychuk, mintyukov or Korchinski) or a talent like Yurov who slips due to the Russian factor.

Geekie or Lambert other guys who could slip, and if HuGo likes them, they could see for to move up.

that’s my thoughts anyway

Trading up to 15 is more realistic but I definitely think Philly's #5 pick is in play as they want to improve short term with Tortorella coming on board and trading that pick is the easiest way to accomplish that.

They say Gorton/Hughes have not ruled out trading up or seem open to that.

Again, I simply hope can get 2 impact players (draft/trade) out of the four 1st round picks in 22 & 23.

I’m hoping for the same. We need two nice players this year

Wright this year and 1 next year works for me.

A bird in hand is always worth more than two in the bush. If we can get a second impact player this year, in some way, it's better than counting on an early draft pick next year, when we don't know what will happen during the season.

Also a full year of development from getting a player this year vs next year.

How about if the Habs give up Caufield + Anderson + Suzuki to draft 1st and 2nd to gurantee that they get Slafkovsky?

What?  If you're gunna go bat shit crazy go all out.

I dont want us to trade caufield but that is what NJ for sure wants for 2nd pick.

We would be very fortunate if the 2nd overall pick turns into a player equivalent to what we saw from Caufield in the second half of last season. Such a trade would be a ridiculous pursuit after the bird in the bush when you already have a stellar young player in your hand.

Yeah. That would be pulling a Milbury - a move that could be as disastrous as when Milbury traded Luongo because he wanted to draft Depietro.
